Civ VI Steam database question

Maybe a new version of the Game Launcher, that makes the game extra-super slow? :mischief:

Or a super-insanely-crazy AI-mad-about-science patch ?

I can't even get Steam to launch (on my MacBook Pro running OS 12.2.1) - it worked this morning, but has been going into hang mode whenever I've tried to launch it since this afternoon. Is anyone else having a similar problem? I've tried restarting, reinstalling, the usual obvious things, with no success.

Have you tried bypassing the launcher? I've heard other people are having the same problem on the Steam forums. However, you should have the Aspyr launcher, which shouldn't have this problem.

If you have Bootcamp or if someone else is on Windows and wants to bypass the launcher, paste the next line into your Launch Options in the Steam properties menu:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization VI\Base\Binaries\Win64Steam\CivilizationVI.exe" %command%
This should launch the game directly in DX11.

Thanks for your reply. I don't think the launcher is the problem - I can't get the Steam application to open in the first place, so I can't even try launching the game itself. Any chance you could point me to any of the relevant disscusions on the Steam forums? I've been trying to look through those, but there are so many subforums and threads it's something of a bewilderment. Thanks again for your help.

Sorry, I misread your comment. The steam forums are a mess and I was only reading the announcement comments from the launcher update. Are you fully quitting steam? I've had a problem with Windows where steam keeps some processes going and won't let me launch steam again. Look in the activity monitor for a steam process. Also, try deleting your steam folder from Application Support, which is a hidden folder in your Library folder, I think searching it in Finder might bring it up.

I do not know how to do it on Mac, but try to change DNS provider in internet connection settings, there is a chance that Steam can't resolve network address to connect. I am talking about DNS provider, because my friend had problems with activation/connecting of completely different device and it appears change solved a problem. Or your system is somehow corrupted and just needs reinstall.

You can change your DNS settings in Network in the system preferences. There's a button with advanced options (doesn't need padlock). Go to the DNS tab and click on the + beneath DNS servers, and write 8.8.8.8 (Google's public DNS server). Save by pressing OK, and in Network, Apply.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. It doesn't seem to be a DNS issue, I was able to install and run the application on a different computer in my house. I've tried removing the folders in the Library; that doesn't work either, unfortunately.

I have a support ticket out with Steam, at the moment I'm at the stage where they tell me to try the obvious things I've already tried multiple times. If anyone has any other suggestions in the interim, I'm all ears...

Steam Support was unable to resolve my problem, but Apple Support was successful, although I'm mystified how/why this worked. In case anyone else has a similar problem, here's what we did:

1. verified that Steam would launch in Safe Mode (which I didn't even know existed, not being the tech-savviest person you'll ever meet);

2. created a test user account, and tried launching Steam in Normal Mode for that user - which was successful;

3. switched back to my original user account - and suddenly Steam worked in Normal Mode again.
