Can anyone please tell me if this patch includes the ability to place civs where you want on the map instead of Player start locations? I would really appreciate it very much. :) Thanks.

Yes, it does.

This has always happened on my machine also. For some reason, when I play Civ III, a file is created in my Windows Temp directory. Usually, it is named ~f39a36.tmp. (If you Ctrl-Alt-Del while Civ III is running, you can usually see ~f39a36 in your running tasks. Examining this file, it appears to be executable (CleanUp Win95 or something like that). The message you see when restarting your computer is due to the creation of a wininit.ini file in your WINDOWS subdirectory which contains this information:

[rename]
nul=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\~f39a36.tmp
nul=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\~f39a36.tmp

This assignment basically deletes the tmp file when you reboot.

I always thought it odd that CivIII required this, and I've meant to ask about it for some time. Does anyone else notice this behavior? This is very non-standard behavior.

This is off-topic, but that process is most probably SafeDisc (the copy protection used for Civ III). SafeDisc is one of a few industry de facto standards, and I suspect if you load up another SafeDisc'ed game you'd see the same kind of behavior.

well, they promised a scenario editor, but offcourse, as i expected, its far from being perfect since there wont be a possibility to set diplomacy.
which means, that on the year of 1939, when the great historic moment will come, i will probably see england go to war with the united states, japan will probably fight italy, and germany?
germany will probably be the most peacful nation on the planet, not involved in any war, and keeping the world safe and cute.
it should be great, it can go to several directions, but this is not a ww2 scenario.
and all you scenario lovers got to realise, that you just cant make any historic based scenarios, unless you want to see stalin joins hands with hitler, and usa fight england.
so firaxis, thanks for the effort, but, dont be arrogant and say its the last patch.
you screwed up on that issue, and probably a few more, fix it, doesnt look like a lot of work to me...
*unless they did it on purpose, so that we wont enjoy the game until PTW shows up, so we will have to buy it.

Dan can you please answer my questions!!! :(

Pretty please?

And eli, we don't know yet if there is diplomacy or not. That's something I'm trying to figure out. :p
But yes, there will be a lot of good scenarios about. :) You can check out the link in my sig for the thread I've made for my US Civil War scenario, if you like. :)

"I have read somewhere that this "re-configuration" thing on boot-up after playing is due to the way the game grabs control of the pc's video display resolution, forcing in to one speific resolution. Maybe that temp file is involved in that, or its removing the change so that after re-booting the resolution doesn't stay changed to what civ3 needed. I know the res while the game is running is different from my normal (I normally use 1600 X 1200); when I ALT-TAb to another running app while civ3 is up, the text/font size is enormously larger then what I am used to (ie the res is smaller then 1600X1200). In either event its never seemed to cause any problem other then a short increase in boot up time- at least for me. I run Win98SE"

THere is a file called civilization3.ini. If you add keepres=1 then it will run the game in the resolution that your computer is currently in. I do know if this might solve the restart problems, but it does make switching between things a bit easier. Plus it makes the game much easir to play. Hope this helps.

I's like to know if any change made in the AI. The diplomacy is crazy in 1.21f and before. A GRACIOUS civilization and turn into furious in a few turn for doing nothing , and the AI pay no respect to your border. In addition, all AIs like war, try to force u to drop out from democracy... Any change to these AI?

Soren said at Apolyton that the AI was updated, and also added that those kinds of changes don't normally make it into the readme.

As far as what changes, we don't know specifically yet. Some of the questions I had were whether the AI stacks units for offensives better, and if there was an improvement in the AI's use of (offensive) artillery.

No response to any of my questions by any of the Firaxians. I won't let them get off so easy though. ;) :D

First off, Firaxis
...thanx for the patch and all the great feedback!

Second,
What i find very interesting as there are numerous posts answered here by Firaxians, the question they don't seem to want to answer is the BIG diplomacy question....

:goodjob: Come on Firaxians, can we set diplomacy rules in the editor or not?

We promise to shut up after that  :crazyeye:

I like that.:) If AI uses artillery offensively, they will build more artilleries and moving them in huge stack. I can't wait to capture those stacks and use them against them.:) It does save me a lot of time for building my own artillery units.:)

These files come from the Safe Disc copy protection that is on the CD. They have nothing to do with any Firaxis code. Anyone that is having issues with the copy protection can contact Infogrames about getting a non-Safe Disc version of the exe. The problems usually occur with people using either DVD Rom drives or CDR-W drives as a primary drive (although there are certain brands of standard CD Roms that can fail with Safe Disc as well). I hope that helps.

At least they'll get the chance to fire while on the attack for once instead of sitting around in the armory. ;)

Another Firaxian.

I'm sure at least one of you can answer the age-old diplomacy question? :(

They are not going to answer it.

I think they haven't given us the opportunity to set diplo states in the editor. This is not because they forgot to do so, but on purpose. If we play the scenarios on multiplayer, we can easily set the diplo states among each other manually. But to play multiplayer, we have to buy PTW...

Firaxis plans on putting user-made scenarios in PtW.
If what you say is true, how do they expect anyone to make any kind of useable scenario? It would be impossible. Which means they would have to do all the scenarios themselves... I just don't see what you say being true.

They want to keep us tense.

Firaxian Dude: "Shall we tell them about diplomacy?"
Other Firaxian: "Nah :mwaha:"

We can still make useable scenarios, but without the diplomacy states.
Thus, we will still be able to play a WW2 scenario in Civ3, but to make sure the diplo states come out right, we need to play MP. And then again, we must buy PTW.
