First off, THIS IS NOT A "game A is better than game B" THREAD!!!

Don't start that stuff in this thread. :sheep:

Okay, now that we're all clear, I wanted to see if anyone else has noticed the same thing as me.

If anyone has posted on Noows.com or the old Everquest forums at the station website, (before they finally took'em down and started the Developer's Corner stuff), then they may have noticed the huge difference between these boards and the other boards. Not once have I read a few threads from this board and wanted to cut my wrists out of sadness for the human race.

The mods keep our posting community clean, and on target. The posters are all helpful and respectful, even if you are a newbie and break some rules. Not that I was ever a newbie, of course. I'm not sure if its that Civ3 draws a different age group, or if its more of a different style. Hmm, on a bit of inspiration, I'll add a poll to this.

Anyhoo, this game is certainly different from the hack'n'slash, see things dead mentality of Everquest. And while the later stages of Civ3 can get tedious and repetitive, its nothing compared to the end game of EQ. (It makes me totally understand why most of the posters who claim multiple level 60s are well versed in explitives and seem to be permanently anal, a condition no-doubt caused by the ten levels after 50.) Perhaps this is the reason why the boards (and its posters) are so much nicer, more considerate, and respectful of fellow human beings?

Or is it simply the age group? College kids and their ilk go to the type of game like Everquest, while more mature and responsible folk like Civ3? And before ya get on me, I'm one of the college-aged ilk, so don't get me for putting *us* down. ;)

In fact, it could be neither (or a mix), but more to do with Everquest being multiplayer whilst Civ3 is single player? People, given the anonymouty (sp?) of cyber-space, tend to behave like a jerk more often than they would in real life. Civ3, being single player, does not draw a person's inner jerk out, so that when they come and post on the websites they aren't already preconditioned into analness.

Or is all of this simply the ravings of a mad warlord? :nya2:

You will have Milk.

And to the topic at hand. A few years ago I tried EverCrack and got sucked it for a few months but when it became impossible to solo my 9th level Monk I gave it up, which BTW helped the marriage. As to the people that play EQ they seem for the most part removed from normal society, me excluded of course;). I have never seen their boards but we have had some problems here with problem posters but b/c these boards are heavily moderated and since we are also a fan site and not official we don't get as much traffic as an official board would. Throw in the fact that EQ is an online only game and you have 100% of their players going online to play the game then you take the fact that Civ3 doesn't even have hotseat MP yet (grrr!) and reasons could be another reason why we are missing some of the undesireables EQ has posting to boards on the internet.

so what your saying is "Play Everquest to get in touch with your inner jerk."
I love it.
my inner jerk can't come out today as he is beating up my inner child.

I can hardly type as I find this so funny:lol:.............my gut hurts :(
ok Im over it, it wasen't really that funny. mabey Im just laughing at the fact that I find it funny?

Well, as the first over-the-hill guy to respond, the poll results so far look rather as I expected them: mostly college-age and younger.

I think it depends more on the mind-set of the players. 20+ years ago, when I was in college, I still tended toward 'thinking games'. I played chess (of course), and board wargames and miniatures. I also played occasional RPG's, like D&D and its predecessors, but they usually devolved into "There's a monster! Kill it!" sessions, so they didn't hold my interest as well.

I guess what I'm saying is that you have to enjoy strategic-level thinking to enjoy a game like Civ, although that does not preclude enjoying games like EQ. It MAY be that those of us who enjoy this tend to keep playing as we get older, but that would just be a guess.

I think it has virtually nothing to do with the age or the specific game that CivIII is.Compare CFC to apolyton and you will know that it has everything to do with this community and the staff.
Surely ,there have been "Spam crisises" to on this forum ,But the moderator's and staff of this forum have managed to keep this forum clean at the best of their possibilety's.
In that i have seen very good progression on these matter's the last month's on this forum. A lot of the poster's that were considerd spammer's some month's ago (withought calling name's) have changed a lot since and are growing to become respectable member's.In general i think most of the member's this community has grown more of a responsibilety to keep this forum nice and clean ,or to help the mod's in doing this.

My respect to the wonderfull mod's of this site.Although they 2 have hard moment's some time when they have to act a bit like an ogre ,i think in the past part of the community's saw the mod's as ogre's ,where now they have more respect for the job the mods do.I certainly do.

Civfanatic's as it is now: a great site with a relaxed ,riendly & social community. :goodjob:

Duck, I think you've hit the nail on the head.

The amount of flamewars and spamfests on other forums I visit is terrible. Even the civ-related ones.

I guess that's why I keep coming back to CivFanatics. Here I can find reasonable, calm (usually) discussion on virtually anything from game mechanics to religion to politics!

Way to go mods!:D

And way to go, CivFanatics community!:goodjob: Keep showing your best face to the world!

I think there is a huge difference in the nature of the games as well. When I played EQ (before the expansions) there were many legitimate reasons for complaints with how the game worked and how mechanics worked.
Basically, EQ encourages people to be competitive amongst themselves, and that draws the same mind types as the Quake players, which are essentially young men with WAAAAY too much free time on their hands.
The reason they have so much free time is because they are such jerks they don't have anything to do BUT play games.
Plua, from my experience playing EQ, the jerks are always the loudest. The nice people outnumber them, they're just quiet about it.
