Civ3 PTW Patch v1.21f Released!

I can't say for certain but I don't think that the 1.21f patch will cause any PBEM difficulties. I was able to load a PBEM turn I had from a 1.14f game without any difficulty. If you have international players with non US games, that could be a problem perhaps. The 1.21f patch does work with the Aussy version. Don't know about the UK version.

Anyone tested multiplayer? Is it lag-free now or is it still a toenail-clipping and doing-the-laundry encouraging activity while waiting for your units to move after giving orders.

After all these months, with all the claims that everything works pretty well, how can you say this?

Lag free? No. Any lag due to distance and internet quality is still there. Nothing any programmer could do about that. I will say that lag now is reasonable for the quality of connections involved (this is all anyone can reasonably ask). If you have a 500 ping you are going to wait a half second for feedback. That's physics.

I patched this morning, played a turn in one of my PBEM games, and sent it to the next player. This player is using the UK 1.14f version, and is unable to load the game.

* Hidden Nationality units are no longer forcibly removed from enemy territory via diplomacy.
* Improved Pangaea map generation.
* Improved random free tech selection for the Scientific civ trait.

:D ahhhhhhhhhhhhh especially the map one.......

* Fixed chat text getting cut off.

this one is a biggy for MP!

* Removed Asturias from Spanish city list.

but they still can't spell Heidelberg I bet.

* Correct date listed for Spain becoming a democracy in Spanish civilopedia chapter.

but they still claim the car was invented in the US I bet

* Fixed bug (Single player and MP) where you could select a unit in an army and unload him (move him out).

bah!

* Fixed an infinite production exploit with PBEM games.

melifluous, it seems they caught it themselves :D

* Fixed the military advisor speed.

what, no more coffee break after pressing F3?????

* Fixed grammar issue with MPP causing a civ to declare war on you.

which one was that?????

* Fixed unit movement on road after combat bug.
* Fixed bug with unit healing.

good work!

* Fixed several bugs involving the display of several items near and crossing the x/y boundaries of the map.

Yay! I hope this works with old PBEMs, I finally get to see my city names in Shabb/Killer!

and am I glad I bought the US versions of Civ3 and PTW! Thanx again, sabo10!

...I tried uninstalling the patch by relaunching the executable, as was previously claimed. A dialogue box claimed to have removed some files and performed "maintenance." Relaunching the game still displayed "v1.21f" at the Main Menu. I reloaded the game, replayed the turn, and sent the newly replayed turn to that same player, and he still wasn't able to load the game.

Damnit, Firaxis! Don't you think about these things?

I am getting my master's degree in applied physics in the end of this year, so please don't treat me as being ignorant there. ;) What i meant with lag-free was if the lag is the lag you'd expect. Meaning not having to wait 2 seconds for my unit to move in a MP game playing someone who i am pinging to with 150ms. I'd consider 150ms lag-free compared to the previous 2seconds. (If this is the case). And what about games with 6 players or so?

So no fix for the PBEM difficulty setting

About the only fix I really cared about. Eventhe infinite relaod PBEM bug is redundant by checking the reload counter...

anarres: we have a good workaournd for that by now (as meli for the latest). Far worse is the idiocy of NOT making the patch downward-compartible for PBEMs and at the same time not making it universal, but country specific.....

Yes, I installed the patch last night and after an hour of
attempting to get a game started gave up in frustration.
Every time I or another host launched the game, I got
the message "The host has cancelled the game." I made
sure all players had the 1.21 patch. Complete crap after
3 patches and 4 months, $35 to "play the world" was a
total waste of money.

Dont get me wrong, Civ 3 is an awesome game, but they
have completely failed to deliver on MP.

They are having alot of problems over at the Moo3 forums with the release of Moo3, too.

That's the last time I buy anything from Infogrames, Firaxis or any game developer for that matter, until it has been out for one year and is bug free enough to play. I ain't shelling out another buck for these products.

If a car manufactor did this, they would be out of business in a hurry, and the government would shut them down. Why can't something be done about these people?

That's it for me. NO MORE MONEY!

Hpw 'bout 5-6 seconds w/ping of 290?

Sorry, didn't mean to seem condescending, some people don't realize the situation though. They keep saying how they get 'no lag' in their favorite FPS shooter and wonder why a turn-based game would have more lag problems.

I've never tried with 6, but 5 was playable even with one of the players on dialup.

Well, if a car company released a buggy product there would be safety concerns and then the government could intervene. Try proving that your Civ3 bugs are a safety concern.
