Civ4 BTS 3.19 crashes - RoM

I have Civilization 4 and BTS installed, patched up to 3.19 (downloaded from firaxis.com). When I start to play Rise of Mankind mod, game crashes after several turns (it's a huge Earth map, 28 civs, but my PC handles that). It says: 'bad memory allocation', or something like that. I didn't try playing unmodded Civ yet (well, of course I did, but before formatting my PC two weeks ago). Before formatting, Civ4, BTS, 3.19, and RoM were all ok. And now I can't play. Can somebody help me?

I had this happen to me as well (on the FfH2 mod).

When it happens, I've managed to load from an Auto-Save and continue playing, it doesn't happen on a constant basis nor is it triggered by a specific issue as far as I can tell, then again I don't really dig into the problem when all I want is to go back and continue crushing empires.

-It's not related to # of civs nor map size.
I.E. I played with 3 civs, and it crashed, but then I played with 3 - 8, up to 16 and it was ok.
-Not related to # of units, because then my loaded games would crash again (which doesn't happen).

And I don't recall this *ever* happening in unmodded Civ. (BtS 3.19)

Well, I also continue playing after a crash (I have to save every 3 turns, and sometimes repeat several turns), but it is really annoying. And the game loading also takes, let's say, a minute.

In my situation it happens all the time. :|
So you say I can't do anything about it? It used to work well...

Yes, I agree it is annoying, perhaps some knowledgeable soul out there will hear our pleas.

It seemed to improve a little after I turn graphic stuff down (say one crash every 10 or so games)... try it out, maybe it's graphic related?

Ok, I'll try. But before formatting it played well on highest graphics. Maybe it's about not yet having downloaded Vista service pack 1? If so, I'll have to wait until that stupid Windows Update does it...

I have no experience of mods so can't help with that issue, but you can check for updates from the control panel rather than waiting for windows update to do it whenever it finally feels like it. I don't know if it will make a difference but it's worth getting those updates into Vista anyway.

I tried playing the base game, unmodded, on lower graphics - it's ok. It doesn't crash. But now I cannot change civics (simply no button 'ok'), and some names (of buildings, leaders, etc.) are like TXT_KEY_LEADER_CHINESE_LEADER, and so on. I'm getting angry... :|

The text issue appears common an particularly asian (but also non-english) language operating systems as in this thread. If this is relevant to you, try setting the non-unicode language to English (Latin) and restart the computer. You may have to set it back after you play the game.

At last. A Windows user frustrated with his operating system. Although it might sound like advertising (which is not compliant with the forum rules), have you thught of switching to a Mac? Check this out: http://www.apple.com/mac/. You might find the one that suits you.

cudfather,

I suggest that you visit the RoM forum and post your problem there. You might also want to search that forum for something like memory allocation. I play this mod and haven't had any problems such as yours.

So...I've been reading through this thread, hoping for some clarity, but sadly I can't find any! My computer is and has always been English, and the non-unicode language is English (united states). I have tried multiple attempts at reinstalling, re-downloading the patch (from different sites, mirrors, etc.), all to no avail. I still get a very "buggy" gameplay--for instance, under the "advanced" section at the opening screen, the link to the main menu is "txt_key_main_menu" or something very similar. I also can't change civics at all (as mentioned previously, no "ok" button) but otherwise the game works fine, no crashes, etc. Any ideas? I would love to be able to play again! But keeping "Barbarism" for the entire game, while challenging, isn't the most fun...

Thanks!

I'm sorry for not having posted here for a while. In fact, there is A Civilization 4: Gold Edition for Mac and you can also buy Civilization 4: Beyond the Sword for the Mac. So I don't think there is a problem. Oh, now I get your point. It's the mod that's not compatible, not the game itself.

there are indeed options for mac - but for one a windows version won't run on its (unless you run a windows version in bootcamp - which would beat the suggestion of running mac instead of windows) and secondly DLL mods don't run on it either - so most of the larger mods like RoM just don't work. Mac is just even less of a gaming platform than PC is...

I know it won't run. That's why I suggested the Mac version and also I know about the mods as I said they won't work on a Mac and you're absolutely right about this. Oh, by the way, may I ask you a question? Have you found any good tutorials on how to make custom unit models using either NifViewer, NifSkope or even Blender? Also, have you found any good Sniper 3D Models? Thanks.

you might want to ask those questions in the Civ4 Creation and Customization subforum - I have not done 3D modeling at all.
As for my previous post: I just felt the need to elaborate mostly because people do browse these threads if they run into trouble and I wanted to make sure its spelled out ;)

Ah, OK. If so, I thank you on behalf of those people.
