Civ4 BTS Patch v3.13 is up

I am actually getting a CTD.

Civ 4 loads, the title screen comes up and I get a message saying "Your computer is below the necessary requirements. the settings have been adjusted" (or something along those lines).

I click "OK" and the game closes and goes right to Desktop.

Reload the game and I get the same message, repeat.

Very easy fix for this you can do yourself:-

Find the CivilizationIV.ini file (by default in My docs/my games) and look at the first part of the file shown here:-

; Don't show a warning when a video memory allocation fails
HideOutOfVRamWarning = 0

; Enable Quick Slide Show Transitions
PopSlides = 0

; Set to 1 to automatically end slide show
EndSlides = 0

; Enable Trilinear Filtering for the Minimap
MinimapTrilinearFilter = 1

; Enable Tree Region Cutting
CutTrees = 1

; A non-zero value overrides the FIELD_OF_VIEW parameter from GlobalDefines.xml
FIELD_OF_VIEW = 0

; Allow Camera Flying
AllowFlying = 0

; Don't show minimum specification warnings
HideMinSpecWarning = 0
Change the 2 lines I've highlighted, so that the zeroes are changed to ones, like so:-

; Don't show a warning when a video memory allocation fails
HideOutOfVRamWarning = 1

; Enable Quick Slide Show Transitions
PopSlides = 0

; Set to 1 to automatically end slide show
EndSlides = 0

; Enable Trilinear Filtering for the Minimap
MinimapTrilinearFilter = 1

; Enable Tree Region Cutting
CutTrees = 1

; A non-zero value overrides the FIELD_OF_VIEW parameter from GlobalDefines.xml
FIELD_OF_VIEW = 0

; Allow Camera Flying
AllowFlying = 0

; Don't show minimum specification warnings
HideMinSpecWarning = 1
This will fix your problem, which is probably caused by having onboard graphics, the game should now run normally, but you might want to lower the graphics settings.

This means that someone with Vanilla (and Warlords) but not BtS now has different Assets from someone with BtS but both have the same patch version - I would assume that this might cause problems in MP games

If this is true, this is truly a ******** side-effect. So, do I have to re-apply the "old" Vanilla and Warlords patches now if I apply 3.13? Or will they issue "official" patches that contain these non-changes so that a BtS install is compatible with non-BtS users?

curiously this also is something that not everyone experiences - just to make sure: you do not have games started with locked assets do you?

Nope, no locked assets in any of my games, and no mods except Solver's unofficial patch.

Save games are definitely not compatible. I've tried 3.03 and 3.02 saves, no mods involved, and they all CTD while loading. I definitely recall it being stated several times that saves would be compatible (and I was sceptical as they usually aren't).

I don't know if this has been commented upon further down in the thread, but my saves all loaded just fine. I had a game in 3.03 going as Egypt and it loaded just fine. I'm running Vista. The only thing I noticed was that when I did load my saved game (which was the first game I tried under the new patch) all my settings were back at default so I had to reset my screen resolution to 1440 x 900 and reset all my in game parameters on every menu (see hit points, no sid's tips, no events, etc) :smoke:

So glad this patch is finally out. Now my units die properly in battle, and don't magically spring back up. Anyway, so far the patch is working fine for me, no problems with crashing or loading old save games (yet). In fact, it has fixed a problem I had with an old save game, which used to crash to desktop every time. I have the UK version, no unofficial patches, and this patch downloaded and worked first time. Not crowing, just wanted to let people know it works fine for me.

I am very happy with this patch, and I don't mind waiting for it - it has fixed some major imbalances in gameplay, and the game is a whole lot smoother! I do like the way that corporations actually are more useful and not so devastating to one's economy, and I have now had a Town being destroyed for the first time (but thankfully, only to village ;) ).

Thanks Firaxis! :goodjob:

My saves, from 3.02, loads just fine.

And this patch is worthy very much the wait only for the fact that an AI just stole Literature from me with a spy in a SG game.

I have legal vanilla Civ4 + legal BTS (both Australia version) + 3.02 patch.

Have d/l'ed & installed (with all 12 fingers crossed!) 3.13 - it works!

Loaded V.3.02 saved game - it works too! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

It seems that with this patch the high quality standard of interface design is failing.

Display bug Culture/Espionage of buildings

A newly introduced bug in a patch is very bad form. I guess someone will be reprimanded for this.

Removed ugly glance tab from Foreign Advisor

First of all, calling it "ugly" in a changelog is very bad. Even though it was a matter of taste to make this decision, you never put it like this in a changelog.

The problem with the Glance screen was of course scaling. It was the only screen with a grid interface, which means problems with horizontal scaling (7 civs default, 18 civs max). Just taking it out seems a bit drastic.

Improved Espionage screen (by Almightix)

Implementing a mod without improving looks a bit cheap. Less scroll might be better, but a scaling interface would have been more consistent than just displaying the 17 maximum slots.

So what happened here? Were the lead-interface-designer-guys busy working on CIV Revolution and was the work left to lesser minions?

Are you kidding?! That is a great screen! Way better than the other!

So they're not perfect. Would you seriously rather they do another couple weeks of testing, followed by rounds of fixing, followed by more weeks of testing? Did you want the patch this year, or what?

That's a subjective decision. There's nothing inherently wrong with putting their value decision into the change log. Especially when the reason for the change was the value decision itself, rather than any functional problem.

It's a question of functionality vs esthetics. Given limited resources, I imagine they determined it would take X programmer hours to fix and test, and they had to make a choice whether to do that fix or to do others. Obviously, they chose the latter. Then, it becomes a choice of whether to "live with" the esthetics, or to remove the feature. This requires a subjective analysis of the value of the feature, as well as of the impact of the esthetics. Makes perfect sense to me.

Probably was simply a decision not to reinvent the wheel. The question then becomes whether to improve that wheel, or to use as is. Again, esthetics vs limited available programming time.

I guess bottom line the question is, in your mind, what of the things done in the patch would you rather they did not do, in order to accomplish these things that you would rather them have done?

:( this patch seems to have broken LAN multiplayer. I get OOC Out of Sync errors like 5 times a game before 3000 BC. One of the computers also seems to be getting a nasty CTD pretty often.

I experienced the same problem. Anyone know whether this is a problem of the patch?

We know it's a problem of the patch, we don't know if it's a problem of the patch not being installed correctly, or if there's a bug with the patch.

Before I download, can anyone tell me if this patch improved the performance issues from the last patch? Is it still difficult for "normal" computers to get past the 1500s?
