Civ7 now includes Denuvo

I admit that I probably need a tin-foil hat, because I despise (despise!) all this telemetry going on within a simple strategy game to play just one more turn. Blech.
(This has nothing to do with Denuvo)

It’s interesting to hear Ed Beach openly discuss how they are harvesting telemetry as you play. I believe this is the first time I have heard a developer freely discuss this and explicitly state they would use it to improve the game.

(Again, Denuvo is not collecting telemetry, the game is itself)

Denuvo only allows offline gaming for a certain amount of time - till token authorization period expires.
After that, game wont let me play, no matter if it's just a single player campaign I want to continue - from personal experience.
And that's a fact.
And that token expiration time is currently unknown. Aside from timing out, tokens are also invalidated if you change any hardware, update Windows or important drivers, or make any other changes that make Denuvo recalculate your system checksum.

Yuo have asked something similar earlier. Answer is still same. I like facts.
Well, here's a fact for you:

The usage of denuvo, means an outright no buy for me. No matter how hard you push "several options to run this game without denuvo", I will not be purchasing it. My reasons are really none of your business. Thank you. :)

I respect your resolve. For me, I’ll just miss hearing your thoughts and insights at a game’s launch. Always some of my favorite.
Sorry mate. If it helps, I've read heaps of reviews, and watched heaps of streamers, and I summarised my thoughts elsewhere (posted here for your benefit). :)

Now that we've got plenty of commercial reviews, and streamers, there does seem to be some patterns emerging.
  • UI is horrendous. Even the people fapping over the game say the UI is bad.
  • Extreme lack of information, hard to find information, and really poor UX.
  • AI is typical civ AI. Can do a few cool things, but over-relies on advantages and boosts, and at the end of the day, is bad at strategy.
  • Performance issues and crashes. Loads of bugs detected. (but this was a preview build, not necessarily the release build).
  • Seen a number of times people use the phrase "feels like one step forwards, 2 steps back".
  • The double-square map and small maps.
  • Graphics are beautiful, but map itself looks very busy late game. Urban graphics are "grey", everything blends into each other, can't visually tell the purpose of each tile at a glance (like civ6).
  • The two core mechanics (ages and civ-switching) are showing as a huge divide, with some absolutely loving, some absolutely hating. Doesn't really seem to be much "meh" middle ground here.

Here is another fact. I did not ask any reasons from you. At least this time around. So it is quite pointless to instruct me on the subject.

I always find it surprising people are surprised by this. As someone who works in software, harvesting anonymizeable data from users to improve experience (in my case for website and for desktop app behavior) is par the course and I find it kind of quaint users think they live in a world of privacy these days. Of course we put all the privacy riders in the user agreement and people click through it without a second thought.

A day after launch, there are a couple of pirated versions. Although I can't know if they work.
Relevant since we had a discussion in this thread on whether denuvo is able to prevent piracy for Civ7.
Yes, linux version and macos do not have Denuvo. So linux version was out immediately of course.

Edit: Source for no denuvo on linux this thread I believe and it linked to irdeto faq which says so: https://irdeto.com/denuvo/anti-tamper

There's no mention of the pirated versions not running on windows. One would expect that if they were linux or mac that it would be very visible in the file info=>they are for windows.
Yet I have no info on whether they work.

It’s not cracked for Windows :) You can look on certain communities and see people complaining about this and getting tricked into downloading viruses that are portraying themselves as the Windows version.

there is no cracked version on windows, and don't try if you find one and want to avoid viruses

If we assume this is so, you can celebrate that day1 was not enough for the cracked version. Yet it would be foolish to expect this to last for long :)
it's not assumption, it's fact.

Goes without saying that, regardless, I would not try it.

A quick googling also gave this bit of information - although it is impressive still: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empress_(cracker)
Quora says that this hacker has cracked games with denuvo.

But I also read some alarming claims about difficulty to mod those games, due to denuvo not allowing it - is it true?

This

have we not figured out that DRM usually doesn't prevent people from eventually cracking and pirating games ?
Read back in this thread. No game with Denuvo has been cracked for something like nearly 2 years at this point. And before that, there was only 1 person semi-capable of it, and they are now gone.

Not sure what you mean by "semi-able". They have cracked games with this software. I also recall the claim being that "no denuvo game can be cracked" - which is clearly false.
