Civaitus = The time after which a Patch has been announced but before it is actually is released. Usually marked by a great lull in Civving due to users not wanting to start a new game and have it rendered obsolete or your favorite Mod broken by the upcoming Patch code.

Civaitus can often times be characterized by the entire Mod forum shutting down while anxious Modder’s hold their breath in anticipation of their Mods never working again. Civaitus can also result in Thal’s crew actually posting under 10 pages of threads a day. Civaitus has been known to result in mad ranting on the New Patch Announcement thread, characterized by the lowest groans for unwanted changes and herculean cheers from those changes that are truly Awesome!!! With unabashed wrangling over what is best for the CiV community as a whole, Y2K Greg banishes countless, hapless, hopeless, Civaitusians who can’t come down from the high of the massive announcement or have nowhere to put there frustrated CiV brains while waiting for the RELEASE…

Brought to you by the people who say… “Don’t you just wish that they would give us about 3 days notice? Just enough to finish up the game your working on and no more!”

I will be pleasantly surprised if they just release something that looks like it has been properly tested, and doesn't break anything that wasn't broken before. However long it takes...

Patch announcements don't inhibit my playing the current iteration other than keeping up with the patch news. The rules change with a patch, but with every new game the geography (etc.) changes anyway. No problemo!

;)
Hiatus, btw.

I too can somehow detect hype & edgy mood swings in a number of posts (even mine)... it's just like the whole planet stopped spinning, dominoes fall, numerically listed hopes & truths fail to provide any kind of relief to the stress.

When such similar events happen in my life, i normally pop in a good DVD (just bought District:9... sue me, i like X-Com & extra-terrestrial stuff), plunge my hands in a bag of chips for two hours only to wake up, eyes fixated at the wall rather than the long list presented on the usual scrolling Generic -- thinking, hey - maybe someone KNOWS.

Then, the Montréal Go_Habs_Go defeated the Canucks in Vancouver... 3-2.

Thus, right back on CFC... for a wild ride and another hunt for facts. Until, CiV gameplay takes over until dawn.

Have a good mighty sleep with one eye open gripping your pillow tight. -- Metallica.

Caught in a loop, better known as reality.

 Good one.

You can also add to the definition:

"massive traffic spikes @ exactly 12 noon EST each day as CivFanatics check the website to see if a patch available thread exists"

(12 noon EST, as this takes into account the 9am PST timeframe)

Glad there's finally a definition for this loathsome disease ...

Seriously, it stinks when you see an excellent set of patch features and you're just waiting, it makes the game you're playing feel so limited, even if you were enjoying it just yesterday!

I hope that's SG:1 or Atlantis, not ROFLverse.

Couldn't agree more. The early years of SG1 and their "planet of the week" stories rocked.

As to the thread, I've certainly got Civaitus. I hope the cure is in place by the weekend.

Yeah, I've been affected by this twice now, once before the horseman change, and now by the huge changes to golden age bonus and hills/mines production bonus.

Thankfully I'm not susceptible to this apparently traumatizing condition. A new patch comes out, I update, play 1 or 2 partial or complete games, then back to other things while waiting for the next iteration of "potential".

Currently, I'm playing EQ2 (Currently?!? Always!!!), Civ4 and Armada 2525 Deluxe. Oh, and a bit of Champions Online.

What happens to your save games post patch? Do the saved games no longer work?

They will try to make it so that old saves work, but there's no guarantee. The more they change, the more likely it is that saves will stop working.

We typically try our best to make sure old saves continue to work after a patch. I'll see about getting a more specific answer.
