Civilization 7 Soundtrack/Music discussion

Maurya (Antiquity) theme. A favorite!

Romans (Antiquity) theme. This one is composed by Roland Rizzo.

Normans (Exploration) theme. This one is also composed by Roland Rizzo.

Han Dynasty China (Antiquity) theme. I'm clueless as to the song inspiration. Definitely not Mo Li Hua or Gao Shan Liu Shui.

Mississippians (Antiquity) theme. Great!

1. Maurya, sounds very holy and intimidating
2. Han, very simple and clean
3. Chola, an interesting melody and good instruments, and the vocals are very nice
4. Mississippi: vocals and melody are really good
5. Egypt, it’s nice and calming, and the instruments are nice
6. Shawnee, the vocals carry it entirely, pretty good
7. Maya, a bit simple but still good
8. Greece, too dark and I don’t like the droning in the background
9. Rome, too digital and bland
10. Norman, sounds bland and generic, maybe it’s made digitally, the drums barely save it
11. Khmer, the instrument is odd and the vocals aren’t interesting

I hope the choir in Greek and Roman themes is a placeholder... Amidst real (sounding) instruments it strikes a bit, I'm not sure how to word it, strange? Especially as there are multiple tracks with singing.

Maya (Antiquity) theme.

Strangely, they haven't uploaded the Aksumite theme. I guess they aren't done composing it yet?

I hope the Modern Era Civ themes sound more "full" for lack of a better word. Perhaps a lot of those will use an orchestra and sound similar to the Industrial Era themes in Civ6.

There's a tendency to think ancient music sounded very simplistic and primitive, but I don't think that's necessarily true to history.

Is this based on anything? I wonder if it's appropriate now to ask Geoff Knorr about the inspirations for these themes.
For the ones that are, I wish they were titled as such. These names are so vague that they feel like placeholders!

They're also sort of redundant... the Maya are strictly an Antiquity Age Civ. That's like... the whole point of this entry, that you have to switch Civs... I can't fathom why they're named as if there were other themes for them.

We're also missing Persia's theme! So that's two antiquity Civs whose themes Firaxis hasn't uploaded to Youtube, Aksum and Persia.

We're also missing the Abbasid theme for the officially revealed Exploration Civs.

Can't wait to hear those three themes when they get uploaded to Youtube. We need some more Middle Eastern Music.

classical Greek music put a lot of emphasis on droning notes. They felt that it created a spiritual atmosphere. They created instruments specifically for that sound which would eventually evolve into the hurdy gurdy, a medieval instrument that has drone strings played by a cranked wheel and keys.

Interestingly, the ones that are being described as digital/artificial/MIDI (Normans, Greece, Rome) are all by Roland Rizzo, and the others (except Maya) are by Geoff Knorr.

Not gonna lie, Rizzo's tracks (especially Rome, Normans, and Greece) are very disappointing.

The maya theme sounds just as "artificial," with its synths that remind of civ II and III. I'm not against any of the two approaches per se, but I have a bit of a hard time imagining how they match in the game. Like, going from the Khmer theme to the Roman one and then to Maurya is ... unpleasant.

I think he had the harder part though. Egypt, Khmer, the Indian and Native American themes seem basically to be records of contemporary music (read: what counts as traditional now) of the region played by contemporary players. Rome, Normans, Greece, and Maya avoided this and tries to be a bit more ancient, I suppose (not that it sounds like ancient Greek music though). Otherwise, if Knorr made them with the same approach as the others, you'd be hearing Rebetiko, Tarantella, and traditional songs from Normandy.

Roland Rizzo is one of the few composers left since the Civ4 days. He composed Babylon's themes in Civ5. But for Civ6, he stepped up to compose for more Civs (Phoenicia, Netherlands, Poland, Inca, Mapuche, Aztecs are among the ones I remember as being composed by him). His approach to music is different from Geoff Knorr, who has a background in Anthropology of Music. I've been a fan of Knorr since Civ5.

Rizzo also composed the Wonder music in Civ 6 and presumably the City-States jingles in Civ5.

I'm hoping Knorr composed the Inca theme. The one in Civ6 wasn't that bad but felt a little too European at times. I liked the Inca themes in Civ5 which were composed by Knorr.

He also did France, Hungary, and Rome which were some of my favorites.

I’ve yet to listen to these myself, so I’m curious to see if it’s as bad as people say.

Khmer (Antiquity) theme. Perhaps a Cambodian can identify the song?
The Khmer theme is melody used for the Apsara Dance, accompanied by poetry, which is the vocal part of the song.
It's more reserved and less upbeat compared to the Civ 6 theme, which is music for a different context.

Here's a simillar melody on youtube:

I’ve never liked most of Rizzo’s work in 6, so I think this is consistent
