Civilization III Fixes (PLEASE READ)

my friend made a copy of Civ 3 gold for me. but i have a DVD/CD-RW Combo drive, so it doesnt read the cd while its in the drive and keeps saying:Please insert the Civilization III Gold CD-Rom, and then restart the application. ive tried to find no cd cracks, but there isnt one for the gold edition. Ive tried to find a cd image to load onto a virtual drive, but there isnt one for the gold edition. Does anyone have any ideas, i cant stop thinking about playing civ 3 gold.

Thanks for the link ainwood, but I tried it and I'm currently using Ultra DMA mode 5 and it won't let me change it. I'll go try Atari tech support, but from what I read in other posts that may be a long shot . . . lol.

I made a scenario from a map I downloaded. Now, when I try to play the scenario, it says "Failed to load" and "file cannot be found." Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

thanks

Alex - Please don't post multiple times for the same problem. I've moved your thread to the creation and customization subforum. Someone there should be able to help out.

I have the obvious answer: BUY the game! We do not support pirates here.

BTW: The copy protection scheme used also checks for virtual CD drives, and won't run if it finds any on your system, whether you are running Civ3 from it or not. ;)

C3C loads up and works fine with no problems until DIPLOMACY is either started by a rival nation or I intitiate same. My computer then crashes to the desktop. I can communicate with some nations but when a particular nation contacts me or vice versa it crashes.

The only way I've found I can continue the current game is to reload the save game and hope that the one particular nation does not try and contact me again or it crashes again.

Not much fun.

This is a major bug and one that regularly repeats itself making the game unplayable.

Has this been recognised by anyone else??

I have no other problems with the game and have fully updated all my drivers. I've also implemented sk0tie's suggestions to no avail. I have updated to Beta Patch v1.15 with no joy.
Yep. I am an XP Pro user with NTFS. Recent clean install. I am playing as the Americans as a regent and I recently met with the Germans who gave me contact with the Russkies and Japs. I have saved at the point and selecting diplomacy with the Japanese crashes the game. Diplomacy with the Russians does not. Going to the next turn also crashes the game.

If as suggested it is an NTFS issue then I may try playing with the permissions.

If you encounter the "Out of Range" or "Out of Sync" message from your monitor, find out what type of monitor you have, and install the CORRECT .INF for your monitor. DO NOT use "Default" or "Plug and Play" driver from Microsoft, this is what is causing the problem. GO MICROSOFT! :goodjob:

This is the problem I'm having.

I tried to install Civ III and C3C on my mom's computer as I will be visiting for a while. She has this dinosaur that my uncle cobbled together for her. Works well enough for email etc.

So, what's an .inf? Where do I get it, and what do I do with it when I do? Help is appreciated, I don't know how long I go w/o my Civ. Look! My hands are shaking . . .

This is EXACTLY my problem too, if this somehow manages to elevate the problem? :p

Any idea why installing SP2 would suddenly turn Civ3C from working to giving an "Unable to allocate draw-buffer" error? I swear I changed nothing else on my laptop...

i am having the problem of "out of frequency" for the monitor whenever i start the game.what happens is monitor shuts down and then i have no other option left other then restarting.
my OS is - winXP
15' LG 500G studioworks monitor...
i am able to run the game on win98 compatibility mode but not on winXP....
can u solve the problem......
BTW frm where to get the corret .INF??

find the .ini file for the game (civilzationiii.ini, ptw.ini, conquests.ini) and add the line Refresh=XX, where XX equals whatever your monitor refresh rate is. You can find that by right clicking on the desktop, clicking properties, and then settings. hit the advanaced tab, and click on monitor. This will give your refresh rate.
If the file doesn't exist in the proper directory, just make it via notepad.

thanx a LOT buddy...........for a yr i was playing on tht compatibility mode...i tried everything updating my (monitor and graphics card)drivers but still there was the problem....
the first visit to the forum has solved my problem, def. made me a gr8 fan of it........

Glad to help.

Any more questions, by all means throw them out. We've got lots of people who know what's going on with this game and can help out. I just happened to get to your post first. :)

A few other people have written about this one; I apologize if I missed the answer but I couldn't find a good one...
When i started civ3/conquests it says -load error/ file not found /
sounds/build/ancient/AncECfull.mp3. So I renamed the file that existed to match what it was looking for and eventually I got intot he game. But then, whenever I tried to initiate contact with another civ, a similar FILE NOT FOUND problem comes up, saying something like sounds/diplomusic/dipnapeace cannot be found. I just feel like this thing is going to keep crashing. Every reply I've seen just tells people to reinstall the game, but I've tried this a couple of times. I have DirectX9.0 or whatever the latest version is, and plenty of free space on my computer. Can anyone help me?

I'm having a problem (sort of). I currently have Civ3 vanilla version 1.07.
I have downloaded the latest patch and installed it but when I do, the game no longer works. The game just refuses to start up. No error screens or nothing, it just doesn't start. I have to uninstall and re-install (w/o the patch) to get the game to work again. This also happens when I try to use the Civ editor. When I start the program, Civ3 refuses to work unless i re-install.

I am currently running:

Windows XP Professional Edition
Pentium 4 1.64 GHz
Soudblaster 16mb Sound Card
S3 Savage Pro DDR 32 MB Video Card (i know it sucks...)
Direct X 9.0

Can someone please help me? Thanks. :king:
