Civilization V Demo Release Date: 21st of september

Well this is disappointing. Wanted to see if my computer could handle the game sufficiently before pre ordering/buying.

I'll try the demo and if it works I'll be waiting for the likely Christmas sales since I am now missing out on all the pre order deals.

Aw, dammit... :(

I guess I'm just going to gamble and buy the product, rather than test it out beforehand with a demo.

EDIT: Spec-wise, I know the game is going to be good, I just want to see if my computer can handle it (my specs are just under the recommended ones).

Seriously? Do you work for 2k? Did you read Sulla's post. Have you paid attention to the gaming industry?

Companies have released tons of poorly designed and poorly programed games all without demos because they know that their game isn't nearly what the hype is and that is is buggy. There is no doubt they will have more sales by delaying the demo.

By delaying the demo it doesn't give people a chance to decide if they will like this game or if it is just too buggy or slow on their system. Remember when Civ III came out? When Civ IV came out? How many threads were in the forums of people complaining they couldn't get it to work on their computer? How many people do you think there were that never posted in the forums and had trouble? A lot of people wouldn't have bought Civ III or Civ IV if they had a chance to demo it and found how much trouble it was.

My guess is that the Firaxis team is fully behind what they have created but the 2k team has decided we have released demos before and that didn't work out well for us.

Of course we will found out how good the game or demo in my case is on the 21st. And to whoever said we are all buying thte game anyway I am not on that list. I won't purchase it until I know for sure it lives up to Civ standards.
:agree:
I fully agree with Iberian (god how happy I am that I got to play in Failout 3 before the purchase to realize how abominable crap that was).

Especially last part of his post - US can blindbuy, we lucky folks from those other, unimportant parts of the world ;) will get a chance to see whether Firaxis is still a top-notch company or they'll blame a half-arsed release on a credit crunch

Dude, it's Civ 5 and you're in the Civfanatics forum. Note the name. It's not "Folks mildly interested in Civ games" or "Maybe going to buy it if we get to try it out first" forum. We're f'ing fanatics. We're all buying the game.

Truer words have never been spoken in this forum!

I am also disappointed that there will be no demo for me as I was always planning to buy the game and would have only wanted it for "early access" which as Greg points out is not their primary purpose.

Guess I'll just wait till Friday the 24th, pop into my local shop on the way home from work and do it the old fashioned way 4 weeks from now!

Thanks for the info.

Releasing the demo the same day as the game is crap though.

However, if there was a Sulla style walkthrough of the game like for cIV, a week before the game is released then that would be acceptable.

The game undoubtedly will be good and may even be great. The marketing of the product has been half arsed though. A complete cluster flock of birds in my opinion.

Look. It's incorrect to say that the game developers are being disingenuous about releasing the demo, because there may be bugs in the game. That's exactly the reason they say they're not releasing the demo. The article says that they haven't completely finished the game yet, and they surely haven't furnished the game yet. However, the game developers have put the best interests of their fans and the honor of this franchise over their financial interests, which says something. You, after all, are a testament that even some Civilization fanatics on this forum will not buy the game for this very reason. This will obviously hurt their sales, as I said. However, they are willing to risk the lack in sales, as long as they please the true fanatics.

In terms of the Mafia II argument, it's not a logical parallel with Civilization V. The Mafia series is new to the gaming community. It is just beginning to garner its identity. Therefore, players are making a bet in experimenting with the game. However, the demos must have hinted to some of those players that the game isn't for them. The Civilization franchise, though, isn't just some new up-and-coming gaming series. The Civilization franchise has ruled over the gaming community for nineteen years. How many gaming series actually have a forum dedicated to modding it with users who actually log in most everday to discuss the mechanics and dynamics of the games? I highly doubt that even a demo full of bugs, which is apparently what many people wanted here, would be as detrimental as the hit that Mafia II received. Nevertheless, I, at least, can tell that financial reasons were not apart of not releasing the demo. Rather, the game developers probably did do so not to disgrace the quality of the game or demo's release into the free market that has made this franchise so good in the first place.

I am wondering why the demo is so late (maybe they changed any things or options in the game) :)

They were hiding things from you

Uh, how so? I wasn't aware that the full Civ 5 game would only be available for one day on Sept. 21st...

Nobody has to pre-order the game if they don't want to. :)

The only real complaint is that people who wanted to get pre-order specials in the U.S. won't be able to if they decide to wait for the demo, but all of the worthwhile pre-order content will eventually be available as DLC, and not having it won't be a game-breaker anyway.

I would be all for postponing the release of the game if it ment a week or two of Demo play. Must be a few others with the same thought

It's still better to get the civilization that must not be named for "free" by pre-ordering.

hehe.. or maybe Producers adds diplomacy statistics and other missing options.
Yeah, that would be much welcome.

This is sad, sad news. I have computer which should run the game, SHOULD does not imply certainty.

I WAS ABOUT TO order the thing at steam for $59, with Babylon and everything even though I don't believe that this civ version will be that good as cIV was improvement over civ III. I would even preorder it before demo comes out, even if I didn't like it after I played the demo I wouldn't cancel my preorder, since the most important to me is the performance at this point (like some people said it here I will play it sooner or later, after 2 expansions and dozen patches).

Now I'm 100% sure that I will only buy this game, after I play the demo and if they score 90+ points on all major review sites and on these forums here.

I guess I'm biased since I hate to leave cIV behind, but nothing here so far encourage me that this will be a great game (good, maybe), especially this http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=376254

you guys all do realize you can preorder the game, get the demo to see if you really want to buy the game, and THEN pick up your preorder...or even cancel it if you change your mind.

Preordering doesn't mean you HAVE to buy it, it just reserves you a copy for when it comes out. If you change your mind, you can get your deposit back.

I'm as disappointed as anyone else that we can't play it early, but I'll still preorder it regardless, to get those preorder bonuses.
