Civilization V Special Edition Announced

I don't get it. Why care about getting an exclusive civ when someone will most likely make a Babylon civ mod. Some of these modders are really very good at what they do.

I'm really happy about the Soundtrack though. Thats the main reason for me buying CEs. Is there a track list floating around? Who are the composers for Civ V? Is there any new Christopher Tin songs for Civ V?

You want a soundtrack? Open up the music folder, copy and paste onto your blank cd and burn it... If it was created in the same way civ4 was, all with mp3's this is very possible, and stupid simple. I don't need to pay extra for something I can do myself in 5 minutes.

This is what a special edition should be- not a different version of the game itself.

Completely and whole-heartedly agree. If it wasn't for the whole babylonia issue, i'd jump at this. But the whole possibility of DLC has left me cautious. I could give a damn about Steam (I've tried it and its whatever), but the DLC issue may well keep me from buying any version of Civ5.

I have never heard of a game where the most expensive editon dont include everything... And I cant understand 2K, do they want us to buy the special edition or the steam special edition? I dont think that anyone will buy both... I could pay the extra money for a special edition, no problem but then I dont want to have to hope to be able to buy a dlc to get the complete game later.

I think its funny how people were suprised that bablyon won't be coming to the CE. I did tell you all it would be a Steam Exclusive deal. Its obvious. It exists to make Steam and Frix/2k more profit and it will achieve its job. I am divided as to whether to get the CE or the DE. I mean 5 little dust collectors and a fly swatter I will enjoy reading once / looking at once seems like a good idea, and it would actually tempt me if I didnt have to 1. go to a shop to get them, or 2. wait for a delivery a few days after release. I guess I will stick with the DE then.

This is worse than Windows Vista. At least Vista had an edition that has everything.

Vista was so composed of fail and AIDS that even the AIDS had AIDS, please don't compare civ to being worse than Vista

Quite so. This is just too silly. A Steam Special and a Boxed Special that have partially overlapping features and partially unique features. I like a good manual, and I like Babylon, but I don't care for metal figures of robots at all. So which to get, if any?

I am sorry to say the collection edtion is a joke. I could be wrong, but I am going on my past experiance with getting a CE for a Civ Game.

When I got the collectors edtion for Civ III, I was so disapointed. Yes I loved the tin case but it wasn't as great as it was hyped. Fool me once, shame on me. I make shure there is no fool me twice. I will not bother getting a collectors edtion for a civ game again. Espically when you almost have to pay 40% more. For that price you can almost buy 2 games for that.

I don't know what is with the special edtion, I find them not worthy of purchasing. I have purchesed special edtions, and always found them a waste of money. At least back then you can return the product. Now you can't even do that.

I hear you. I'm still on a counter-strike against Major League baseball over the missing World Series. I gave away my official merchandise collection and never looked in the sports section, tuned in the radio or turned on the tv for baseball again.

The DLC thing/threat to the multiplayer & modding staus quo has disturbed me so much that I went from" a must have, even at 10X the price" to "wait till it gets marked down & buy from anyone but Steam" vs. "skip V entirely. "

I've learned a lot this week. Firaxis is down-sizing. That you can turn off your auto-patch on a game basis in Steam. That Firaxis intends to work on PBEM, pittboss and hotseat when they've finished V. That they are offering this special edition.

It seems to me that Firaxis and 2K are listening and making an effort. Maybe I can show some good faith on my part. I can buy the Special Boxed Edition. I can still take a stand against premium DLC, if they offer it, by not buying it. I can support the game without supporting a certain marketing plan.

That's how it looks to me today.

I think this is probably a rational decision. After all, the Special Boxed Edition is what a collector's edition should look like. Unfortunately I'm still too angry about the whole 0-day DLC thing to be rational about this, and it's turning any good intentions sour.

I sufficiently object to the quarantine and use of game content as leverage to make me purchase a "special edition" that I would not have bought it anyway. Still, my anger about the whole issue has caused me to take offence at the withdrawal of the "special edition" for overseas buyers and entire marketing approach of the game.

Because I live outside America I don't have an option to buy the game with all available content? Because I live outside America I have to wait longer for any version to be available? And pay a premium for the privilege?

So at the moment I can wait a couple of days after my American friends have started playing the complete game before paying an extra US$20 (I'm Australian) for an incomplete version of the game that also doesn't include the extras they got. Or, now, I can instead pay another Aus$30 on top of that for a game which (while still incomplete) now comes with some figurines and a nice book.

Par for the course, arguably, for Australian games. And really, it's only the 0-day DLC thing which makes me really care about any of it. And that is something that the new boxed edition can't do anything about.

So while I'm looking forward to the game immensely, I'm currently sufficiently peeved that I'm looking at cutting off my own nose to spite my face. I imagine that there will be some GOTY edition 6-12 months after release, and I might just have to hold off until then.

Luckily, I there is a halfway decent game I can play in the meanwhile, called Civilization...

I am pretty sure the deluxe is back up on steam for everyone, and has been for a few weeks. You can still get it.

Deluxe edition is definitely available again to Aussies - 90USD. Never got an explanation as to why it disappeared for a week or two, but it's not a big deal.

I believe it disapeared in the UK and other places too. It was a bug and has been fixed.

I don't think the box artwork suits CiV. What has random geometric shapes got to do with Civilizations?

Aside from that, I think the rest of the stuff is pretty cool. I'm actually looking forward to the mech.

Everywhere outside of North America. Actually we don't know that it was a bug either. We haven't been told why it was temporarily unavailable.

@Hadron, remember the artwork is not final. I agree it's not very fitting and it's very very likely to change.

I think one thing a lot of us are dying to know, Elizabeth, if you can answer it, is whether or not Babylon will be available as stand-alone DLC at a later date. That would greatly influence my purchasing decision.

And that is more than likely the reason why you won't probably get an answer to that question before the launch date

Ah, I see. Inside the US$79 Civ V listing is the details of the alternate deluxe version, once again. Well, that takes care of the greatest and rather inexplicable discrepancy.

Doesn't help me personally, as I can't bring myself to purchase a version that seems to be so cynically using part of the game content (even though the rest of the deluxe edition content actually looks quite interesting!), but it certainly levels the playing field.

Hopefully I'll get over myself within the next couple of months to the point where I'm able to purchase the standard edition. That will just involve getting my head around the fact that different players are going to have different editions so there is really no "complete" version of the game. So any subsequent DLC or expansions that come up will probably need to actually justify their purchase, rather than being auto-buys.

IMO it's pretty likely Babylon will eventually be available as DLC or in an expansion pack. I'm pretty sure that in marketing it's legitimate to call something "exclusive" where in fact it is only exclusive for a limited time.

EDIT... This was not a reply to kopyion
