Civilization VII - Civ switching and age transitions

Greece officially revealed! :woohoo:

What exactly does selecting the "Play as [Enter Civ Here]" option mean?
I assume if you start in Exploration Age then you get to choose the Antiquity Age origin.

I think Hatshepsut is Abbasids and Amina is Songhai.

So... why is there an Augustus on top of the Abbassids and on the unknown civ to the left?
Unlocked by him? Why are the Abbassids then not available ?
I assume its there because Augustus can become them and Rome can't, but you still have to meet the unlock conditions

My guess.. those are civs with picks that fit well with him gameplay wise

Historical pick, same as shown in the previous videos. A leader icon will be above the civs that match for historical reasons. Abbasids is a bit of a stretch for Augustus, but hey.

Have to admit I'm a little disappointed in what we've seen of the era switching so far. It all seems pretty low impact, without much room for things like revolutions or new civs spawning between eras.

Even the whole map expanding thing seems like any other continents game, except for it sorta rules out / complicates most non-continents map types.

Well we haven't seen the Crises, and we haven't seen what happens when you get very unhappy (which could happen during Crises... or at other times)

Seems like its designed that way since they want to keep cohesion between the eras despite the civ switching.

I do wonder what would happen if a leader was eliminated before the era switch. It might be interesting to let them come back as a new civ or have razed/cities lost in crisis become independent nations
