Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

You're cloning the data, not the firmware and hardware, so no, there should be no problem. As to what you do it with, you need something like Acronis True Image or similar.

I've tried to clone my old hard drive but i am getting errors that the disk is unreadable at various points sometimes 30% sometimes around 60% completion. Can you off any advice to me as how to get all my data over to my new hard drive? perhaps i could clone it seperate pieces so that it has an easier time copying the data? EDIT: I'm using Acronis btw

A few days ago I purchased a new surge protector. Ever since I plugged the ethernet cable going from the router to my computer into it, my internet connection (on that 1 computer) has been taking forever to connect. There'll be a little red "X" over the network icon in the tray and the majority of the time I have to wait and wait or restart to get a connection. Is the surge protector faulty or is something wrong with my set-up? This only started when the surge protector went in. Any ideas/suggestions?

Well I would say remove your ethernet cable out of the surge protecter. It's not going to protect anything. Mostly because ethernet cable don't send electricty. It your router thats going to fry in the event of an electrical surge. And if your router is hooked up to the surge protector then you already are protected and running the ethernet cable through the surge protector is useless.

Besides your going to have bigger issues then your ethernet cable if a surge somehow gets through your surge protector. ;)

Well the good news is that the hard drive succesfully cloned. However i can't get it start windows by its self. When i have both hard drives plugged in I can boot from either one. However once i take the old hard drive out i have errors loading windows. Can anyone offer any advice?

heres a picture... something doesnt look right to me my new drive is c: by the way the old is E:
attachment.php

I have a following stupid problem:

I have on my hands a MSWord document, containing ~30 pictures. The original creator of the document apparently just copied large, hi-res photos there and dragged them down to suitable screen size. Problem is, I now need to mail the damn thing, and even gmail won't accept the current attachment size of over 40 megs.

How can I reduce those pictures inside the document in size? I don't have the original picture files I could just batch resize, and if I tried doing it the stupid way (i.e. directly copying the pictures from the document into a program such as IrfanView or Paint one by one) it completely messes up the colors for some reason. There is a option, accessible through picture toolbar which can "change the resolution for web/screen" into 96 dpi, but using that seems to have no effect on actual file size.
Word is 2002 version, btw.

can you take a screenshot and crop them? Its clumsy, I know...

Thanks, but nvm: I was able to copy them into MS Photo Editor without color problem occurring. Should've started with that, but I've never used MS Photo Editor before...:crazyeye:

Try different cables and make certain that the connections are good. If that doesn't solve the problem, don't run the cable through the surge suppressor. It is possible to get fried through the phone lines. But it isn't common.

How long should a cell phone's battery last? My phone is less than a year old, yet it seems I have to charge it more often than I used to. At least every other day.

Depends on the type of battery. Some types wear out faster than others.

question. School wifi will kick you off if you dont have a proper antivirus. How does it do that?

The virus kicks you off ;)

No. It actually says that in the book. That you cannot connect to the wifi if you dont have an uptodate antivirus.

I`ve had three cell phones in my life and two of them have had really crappy batteries. I don`t think it`s that uncommon.

Then it's probably a rule? As in your not allowed to connect without an up to date antivirus?

It says it will kick you off. Hang on.

It doesnt say on the page but other places it does

Ok heres a question. Im part time in college ok. And in class they made reference to a class I was not in that involved Assembly programming (vs. high-level languages like C) and hexadecimals and pointing to the ceiling tiles. And I think I got lost there cos I did not do that class. I looked it up but it made not much sense to me. Does somebody have a easy-to-understand overview? Just general.

Assembly language is human readable machine code (which the processor uses).

It's very low level. Probably best to look into a simple processor architecture rather than modern ones such as PC processors - easiest is probably something like the 6502 processor.

This looks ok: http://www.scribd.com/doc/2429815/Using-6502-Assembly-Language-by-Randy-Hyde

I know how to program in Z80 assembly language, but that is a more complicated processor than the 6502. I have some good links for that however if you are interested.

Yeah, they mentioned with the high-level one it was easier to port because you could make a compiler for a different system. While there were a lot of assembly languages. Thats if I understood it right
