Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

Ok so I have a folder on my computer and my laptop. I want to sync them up. I usually do it with my USB stick but it gets really messy after a while. Is there a way to do it free over internet? My "home computer" is turned on nearly all the time.

I think Ill try this because I heard good things about it.

EDIT: Working quite nicely. Looks like a keeper :)

Oh dang! This wasnt meant to be a quote

Anybody got 'temporary error 500 message' when trying to log into gmail lately?
I'm getting tons of the last week (maybe two weeks) or so.... It's very annoying!

It seems this chair + carpet is loaded with static electricity. This is causing an issue when I try to plug a USB flash-drive into the laptop, when the metal connectors make contact it instantly zaps it and shuts the computer off. I feel fortunate the thing is still working.

Does this mean I need to ground myself before attempting to plug the flash-drive into the USB port?

I have 15 pictures I want to set as a desktop background on windows 7 and the fastest the personalization window will let me change slides is 10 secs. I want them to change every .10 seconds. Any way to do this?

Make the pictures into a .gif animation which changes the pictures every .10 seconds. Set it as your background.

? Does it even support .gif format ?

Even if it works, this will likely result in very poor resolution though... so in short, the answer to your question is no, not as far as I know.

Why in the hell would you want the pictures to change every .1 seconds?

To induce seizures?

Question: Is a wireless device considered to be on a LAN? Its for a program I want to install a plugin really

I don't think so, think what you're looking for is WAN. Wireless Area Network.

It might work, though... *scratches head*

WAN: Wide Area Network

LAN: Local Area Network

Question: Is a wireless device considered to be on a LAN?

Depends. But I guess the answer in your case is yes. You are thinking about using one of your computers at home to control an other one of your computers at home, right?
A local area network (LAN) is a computer network that connects computers and devices in a limited geographical area such as home, school, computer laboratory or office building.

Yeah. Specifically what I want to do is connect my laptop and desktop which are on the same router.

Well I got it working. Thanks

Whats a good free HEX editor? I have a file missing extension and I want to see what it is

If you just want to look at the file use "debug <filename>" at the command prompt.

d dumps the hex to the screen a bit at a time, q quits.

Just tried it on a civ save file though - didn't work for some reason :(

EDIT: I think it doesn't work with long filenames.

With this new stupid metered intenet thing they're putting in place (damn you CRTC), I have a question about bandwidth. This is the current network setup (there's also a wireless laptop but I didnt draw it in)

If you transfer a file from PC 1 to PC 2, considering it has to go through the router would it show up on your internet usage?

It never reaches the internet. The router, the reason that the router exists, is to only send the file to the intended destination.

Good, Thats what I was asking. If it ever reaches the internet if you're going through a router

Think about what a router actually does. It doesn't just connect computers to one another. It also forwards data in the correct direction, and prevents it from going in the wrong direction.

Look up the difference between a router, a hub, a bridge, and a switch.
