Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

in the actual event of windows death, use a 'live' linux cd to retrieve data like docs, etc. ( i've had occasion to do this  ). since linux is free, you can get a variety of examples from magazine dvd's, etc.

Is it safe to use Windex to clean a scanner, or should I use something different? I googled it and got conflicting results.

on the exterior of the glass it should be fine. just make certain it's all wiped off completely without streaking.

Me and my friend want to pay Age of Empires 1 Rise of Rome over the interwehbs. We've done it though LAN and it works fine. We tried "internet IP" option where you just type the other computers IP address when it prompts you and you find game and join it - it didn't work. We tried Hamachi but we failed at it.

What do we need to do?

Connect to the same hamachi network and join a LAN game. Direct IP to the hamachi ip for one or the other of you should also work.

Tried that, we found the other game but it said "Unable to join" when clicked join - is there any other way to not use it? I don't like it.

Question: I'm entering a bunch of textbooks into my book database, and I was searching for covers. So I went to google images, put in the book title. The thumbnail works properly, but when I click on "View full-size image" I get this:
http://www.breakwaterbooks.com/viewpic2.php?pic=images/books/18.jpg

Is it just me or is it a bunch of gibberish?

That's good to know I didn't break something.

Why, when scanning metallic surfaces (on the covers of some books I have, it has them), they come out dark? And is there a way to make them the right color?

Its just your scanner. Mine scans metallic surfaces in as fairly bright (which makes sense considering how scanners work)

Thanks

Just did a bunch of scans, and left the top of the scanner up for a couple of hours. When I went to put it down, I felt something go flying and hit me. (I couldn't find it, but it felt like a piece of plastic or something), and now the scanner top won't go further than about halfway down. It also makes this horrible squeaking noise so I don't want to force it down. Any suggestions?

I did try googling. If only I knew what the proper name for "the top of the scanner" is!

Also, I don't want to leave it up because then dust settles on it and it gets dirty. :(

It was either a spring or a piece of the mechanism spring loaded. Try to figure out what is preventing the lid from closing and see if you can bend it out of your way and live without it.

Strange thing, the top went down overnight while I slept and now it's opening and closing perfectly fine. Beats me, and I'm not even sure HOW it could have came down, as it was up...

with a big enough flash drive (16GB?) is it possible to run Civ4/BtS off of it?

Possible yes. Would you want to? No. The I/O on that flash drive is so low that it would take forever to start, movies would take forever to load, new textures...etc. The only case I see this as useful at all is if you have an ESATA flash drive, in which case you're going to get decent speeds.

If you're trying to make it portable, it probably won't work either because when the program is installed it has registry hooks in it that won't be there when you go to run it on another machine.
