Question:

What are my options for lightweight media players/managers? I don't want lots of features, just playlists. And I want a small footprint because RAM is precious.

Foobar2000? Components can be added at leisure; you build up from a barebones player. Or Media Player Classic (a bit overkill)?

In a quick, non-scientific test, booting up foobar and playing music took 14.8 megabytes. Media Player Classic took 7.48 megabytes. I have no idea what mainstream players use.

Well, I can tell you that after 2 weeks of not turning it off, iTunes is using 120mb. (And no, it doesnt like giving up any of that either)

Foobar is probably your best bet if you're willing to deal with a lot of initial setup.

Winamp, using the "classic" black-and-green skin and no fancy addons, takes 5,748 K to load up and play music.

EDIT: OK, it jumped up to 5,760 K.

ANOTHER EDIT: The reason Winamp has always been my player of choice is because it wasn't a memory-hog on my first machine. Also, when installing, make sure to de-check the toolbar and the 50 free MP3 thingy.

STILL ANOTHER: If you don't like the black-and-green, I'm pretty sure you can download other skins. Make sure it's "classic" one though.

Thanks. I've been using Winamp for audio and Windows Media Player for video, but they're both problematic, especially in the old machines. I'll check out foobar, it may be worth the fuss. I like modular. (I always use classic Winamp skins, I love how compact they get.)

I just installed a game. I wanted to put it in my C:/Games folder but when I opened up the installer it automatically installed itself to C:/Program Files. I'd manually move it, but I don't know if there's any registry entries that will screw up if I do. Is there anything I can do?

Also why should I get a new one if I dont have any current problems with this one? (Except for that weird CD drive.) The software on the other hand ...

Why should I buy one when I'm not having any hardware problem (minus the CD drive) with this one? I don't see why to replace an entire computer for one CD drive, or for software problems.

Do computers fall apart when they're broken? I mean, I had a CD literally explode in the drive once. That was fun, taking the drive apart and shaking all the broken pieces out.

It is not unknown for CDs to shatter.

Since computers are mostly non-moving parts, when they break they tend to not fall apart. Of course, the parts that do move can fall apart when broken....
