Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread

Why do you guys always use HDD instead of HD? Is there some kind of ambiguity with HD?

I only started seeing it much after High Def TV took the HD label for itself. So I think it's mostly about avoiding confusion.

Silly question: Recently in Google Docs I noticed a random file in there, "bios_beep_codes" or something. Opened it and it was exactly what it said. Where could it have come from?

I have a: Windows XP;
3GB RAM
Geforce 8800GT 512MB
2.16 Ghz Dual Processor

How much do you think it will fetch on ebay? Or maybe even just a starting bid.

Depends on the processor. The CPU will probly fetch 60-90$, the Ram around 30. The whole thing together is around 300 Id say, maybe less.

One of those Pentium Ds? Then I'd say maybe $200-$250 total for the whole system. Though I just checked, I don't think the Pentiums(the dual cores at least) ever were that slow, so you must have a core duo, which would get a bit more.

Oh, didn't notice the Cores were just mobile processors, was wondering why I never heard of them before. Well then I have no idea what he could have.

salty mud:
start>run>dxdiag
It will tell you the processor family.

Other than getting another antivirus, how can I stop the AVG security toolbar from installing? I turned it off, it turns itself back on. I disable it, it reenables itself. No way to uninstall it. It just takes up space. Suggestions?

another silly question: If a PC is x86. what's a Macintosh? I'm guessing PowerPC.

*Sigh*

M$ is really ticking me off.

How do I disable the windows vista automatic device installer so I can install the graphics drivers from nvidia manually?

Just cancel it when it starts. After you have your driver installed windows won't ask again.

Really good question. I cant cancel immediately due to windows taking a while to start up, and by the time I manage to cancel, its already partway into the install.

How about letting it go, uninstalling the standard driver and then re-installing it as a standard VGA card before restarting the system to run your own driver?

Then I need to clean off the drivers, which means that when I reboot...it all happens again. Ive had some bad problems with not cleaning off the drivers.
Nowadays I just kill all services, reboot, install drivers, restart services and then reboot again. Takes 3x as long as it needs to though.

I don't have anything significant starting with windows but if I did, I might be inclined to do it your way. I'd probably curse it and be glad I didn't have to do it often ;)

WRT uninstalling the driver, you could install the standard VGA placeholder driver before you reboot.

For me, there's no option to cancel it whatsoever.
