While researching CPU coolers I came across this 'modding' technique that I never heard of before, but it seems plausible. So does anyone "lap" their cpu/cpu cooler contact surfaces?

I dont simply cus it kills warranty on both the cooler and cpu. Im not made of money, so I dont want to risk screwing it up. Often enough, the curvature is also very small and nothing that some good TIM cant fix.
 
Noobish question ... Where in Speedfan is the option to change the speed of the fan? I tried changing Speed01, Speed02, all of those but nothing happens.

Also my GPU is at 66 C/149 F. That seems a little high?!

MY GPU temp right now is 87C/187F

I only start worrying once it hits 90C, then its a problem. Under that wont do anything besides make your pc a space heater.

No, but you could get to the point where you need almost no thermal paste, which is good as the stuff has thermal resistance.

That could mean you'd get away with a smaller heatsink, only because the CPU will more readily give up its heat even when the heatsink is warm. This assumes the grease was the weak link in the chain to begin with but I doubt anyone would take this road in practice.

The better reason to do it would be to reduce the heat bottleneck with an overclocked CPU.

Hai guys.

I'm trying to type Unicode on my laptop, but I have no number pad or numlock. How can I bypass this and type in Unicode characters? I'm running Ubuntu and XP; solutions for either system would be helpful.

(Please, don't tell me to copy and paste characters or select them from a template.) :ack:

Files? Were they finally moved to separate files in Vista? Thank goodness.
They should be safe to delete.

Are you referring to the ALT codes? Where you press and hold ALT while typing on the numpad? If so, you should have some kind of Fn or Function key. Holding that key down while typing certain keys 'turns on' your numpad. U-I-O for 4-5-6, or something like that. You should see numbers on those keys the same color as the function key. Use those as your numpad. This works on my laptop at work, I can't see why it wouldn't work for you.

Purchase a USB numpad for $5.
 
SpybotS&D has a fairly decent startup editor. You can use it to disable stuff. Google will help you decide what's needed and not. There's no real easy answer, at least that I've found.

It's very unlikely that it's worth disabling any of these. Even if they are taking RAM, they're also paged, and the RAM gets released for services if it's needed for something else you're doing.

Why would a portable CD player start "clicking" and require to stop and play again upon quickly changing songs? Happens quite a bit; I'm thinking the motor got seized up but wouldn't that be more permanent?
