lurker's comment: It's
oil. It isn't something you can just live without. If some jerk with a large supply decides to raise the price, you
do have to pay the price unless you want your nation to grind to a halt. Only so many people supply it and there's only so much to be had - you can't always just go off and get more from somebody else.
For example, despite Kal'tzhar's claims here, the UK's oil production cannot support, say, all of Europe. Iran, being the second largest OPEC producer, can generate a far larger supply. In fact, by not buying Iran's readily available oil, demand goes up as alternate sources begin to be tapped. As demand goes up, so do prices (law of supply and demand) for a highly sought after good.
So, in effect, by Iran having a large percentage of the oil market, when they raise prices, if nobody wants to buy from them, the ensuing demand placed on other oil producing nations will likely cause
them to raise prices, meaning there's no reason not to buy from Iran when all is said and done.
This is why OPEC and oil producing nations as a whole are so bloody powerful. You can't just ignore them and magically conjure oil out of nowhere. See also:
The 1973 Oil Crisis.
In the case of Iran the only ones who need to be particularly worried are the Europeans, since the Americans have had embargos on the Iranians since the 70's. In fact, OTL Iran threatening to raise prices was incredibly stupid on the part of the Iranians since it just threw the Europeans into the American camp. But I digress.
In the case of this NES it was stupid to randomly announce raising prices without getting the rest of OPEC to go along.
