Well, my kids are not little. They are ages 13, 15 and 18. And all three are split on what they want. The 13 year old wants a PS3, the 15 year old wants an XBOX360 and the 18 year old wants a Wii.
Personally I would rule out both the Wii and Ps3. Purely on the grounds that inital consoles are sold at a "premium price". Now that all three next gen console have launched we can expect a price cutting to begin in ernst.
Given that console generally value falls as time goes on. (all tech goods).
you can expect to loose more on the ps3 then the wii. While the xbox2 has been out for a while and its already taken a dip in price to make it much more appealing. value for money given its inital launch price (cheaper now and with free games)
Unless you have a specific game you want. i,e zelda on the wii
Resistence on the ps3 or gear of wars on xbox2. that you MUST play and NOW during xmas. better off not buying it straight away.
Remember that most consoles being backwards compatiable allowing access to a nice libary of "cheap" good games. but as above unless there a must play game you want its best buying the cheaper console to enjoy it on. Afterall you only have a limited budget for both system and games right ?
what i mean is if you brough a ps3 you would probably buy 1-2 games given how expensive the console will cost. But if you went with the wii you would probably get 6-8 games for the same price. Do keep this in mind.
anyway.
xbox2 if you want to buy now for xmas
ps3 would wait for it to moderate fall in price
wii would wait for a modest fall in price
ps2 / gc / xbox thou are very safe and inexpenisve choices.

Umm... just so there's no confusion, the 360 definitely has NOT been lowered in price. It's still selling for $400 here in the US (you can also get a $300 model, but it's stripped down to the point of being pretty useless). Now the 360 definitely does have a lot more games than the other systems, but none of them have cut their prices yet.
Then again, it's possible that the price has been lowered in Australia (where FriendlyFire is) and I'm not aware of it.
yep 100au cheaper and comes with one free game.
Theres also at the same "launch" price a new "pack" with extra controller and two game.
EDIT: just for analysis shake that would be roughly $100au for the extra controller and game.
Depending on which game(s) you want it would be more value to go for the console with the one game.
