The United States Army Institute of Heraldry has plans for flags with up to 56 stars using a similar staggered star arrangement in case additional states accede.

There are ongoing statehood movements in Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.

All North America "combination" flags suffer a flaw: while everybody got a simple symbol for Canada (maple leaf), USA (star, or 50 stars) and even Quebec (fleurs-de-lis) except Mexico (eagle with snake on cactus) (of course, unless some brings up an acceptable substitute). It clutters up the flag and draws attention to the eagle, away from everything else. It also makes it hard to draw (first rule of vexillology: a good flag should be so simple a child can draw it).

A generic design might be better. But it couldn't have stars for states, as it too close to the Stars and Strips.

As for the "definition" of North America, it varies with use. Some put the boarder at the Rio Grande, some at the southern Mexican boarder, and some right up to Panama. Charles Darwin defined North America from 20 N northwards. We are the master of words, not the other way around. Besides, it not only problem with continental identification (Is Australia a continent? Is Europe?).

That is one of the problems with my version of pboily's flag. The bottom left and top right are very visually heavy, as the red maple leaf and eagle really draw your eye's attention. Perhaps if the maple leaf and eagle were changed to the blue background found in the American and Quebec sections it would make it more visually balanced.

My modification of pboily's flag.

I think it looks quite nice.

It does look a whole lot better.

I've never heard "Latin America consists of South America, Central America and the Carribean" either. Latin America refers to th countries in the Americas in which the predominant language is one of the latin derived languages (i.e spanish, portuguese...), it's not a geographical region.
Yes, okay, got me there

It needs something other than the single star. We're not Somalia. Perhaps the 13 stars of the original colonies?

Funny how much it looks like the Costa Rican flag. :mischief:

I like it, but aren't you afraid many Americans could have an heart attack seeing the French Fleur-de-Lys the same size as the US star?
Hmm...
Another reason to like it :D

Seems like you discovered our evil plans for domination!!

Here are some flags from a contest made to design a Latin American Flag.
I bet Chavez would love the second design.
