After losing 2 Crusaders to a Roman Legion in a skirmish outside Virconium, we have a ripe chance to reattack Virconium. It was defended with only legions and perhaps phalanx, easily overcome with crusaders. We should attack now while it is easy.

I personally think we should send more forces. We have 6 crusaders.

Edit- I forgot to post a Poll! Just say Yes or No first, then say why. This will make it easier :)

Or abstain.

I think its a good idea so that we can get Astronomy. But if we do, we need AT LEAST one pikeman too.

Agreed witht the three crusaders and a pike. I would also suggest landing them in different areas to avoid a stack being counterattacked.

Let's move forward on these guys!

4 Crusaders. Move the triremes up close, attack and take the city in one turn. Get Astronomy. When the next Roman unit arrives, they will most surely inititate dialog and offer peace. IMHO we should sign the peace treaty. :)

The needed pikemen can then be build in the occupied city.

That's the reason why we should do this attack ASAP, and the reason why we shouldn't raise the science rate.

One pikeman there will be of great help. What happens if the peace treaty isn't sealed?

So, I say 3 crus and 1 pike.

As you can see, we can land crusaders and then attack in the same turn, but we cannot land a pikeman directly into the city. It's position does let us attack from 3 different squares with the trireme in the same position so we should not be wiped out by the legion that the Romans will inevitably build should we not take the city first time round. I say we'll only need 3 crusaders and a pikeman. And 2 triremes of course. We badly need Cop's and should use all of the caravans to build it straightaway. It won't do us any good in a different city so we can't just hope to capture it.

Just to add a bit of information:

While we do have 6 crusaders, 4 of them are in our island nations off the main island (Mpondo, Unknown City, etc).

Only 2 on the mainland (unless we rush one somewhere).

With trieme movements and speed being and issue, we should discuss either rushing a crusader to provide a quick 3rd attack unit or possibly sending 2 crusaders and 2 pikes. We could stack a crusader and pike as teams for help with possible counters..

What do others think?

I think that we would still be able to take it with only two attacking crusaders. I can't look at the game to tell, but if there is no easy way to get that third crusader to Viroconium from our outlying islands then I think we should just go with two rather than diverting production on the mainland. We need the caravans and wonders that our cities are building, but if people don't think that two crusaders are enough to take one city then I'd suggest switching Hippoville from its current caravan and rush the crusader there.

I think we'll get by with 2 crusaders and 2 pikes. I doubt that the Romans will be able to build up a massive defence by then, and we only want the tech really! Another city would be nice, but typically for the AI, they've neglected the whale.

Is that not the truth! Dopey AI with their city placements.

If we do take the city, we may have to decide if we wish to disband via settler and move it. It's not even on the coast and can't build a harbor either!! Plus, since we're taking it with military the population may go lower and we probably won't have much to speak of with improvements either.

I think it's a pretty good candidate.

Our mistake last time was attacking with only two Crusaders. We need two boatloads, and three Crusaders would be far preferable. A pike is little defense against a Legion. We need to be able to take the city the same turn we attack it. We may want to consider rushing a Crusader if there isn't another available we can get there in reasonable time. Another option would be a diplo and just steal the tech. Our primary concern is getting the tech ASAP, correct?

Uh oh, Leo, now I'm starting to agree with you. A lot can be decided once we know how much time before we get Astronomy ourselves. As Pggar has pointed out, we need to obtain it from the Romans before we discover it ourselves - this will allow us to carry over the turns toward our next tech to discover it quickly. Rushing a dip to steal the tech (I thought about bribing, but we may need the cash for wonder stuff) may be a great option indeed.

The only caveat is if the Romans have a second tech that we don't. Dips don't get a choice of what to steal, and I'd hate to end up with Bridge Building or something like that.

I, too, would rather see 3 crusaders on this mission. Rushing one in Hippoville may indeed be the way to proceed. Land on 3 different squares and even if they had 3 defenders they could not stop us from taking the city on the following turn.
