Instead of burning a CD for backup, you could use a program called Virtual CD-ROM. It saves the cd in your harddrive and creates a new 'virtual' cd drive. If you have memory to spare, I think it works better than burning in a cd.

"Yes one can make a copy of the game and it appears on the new disk BUT you can not use it to play the game because of something else built in so it will not play or install."
Why not try Alcohol 120%.
I tried the trial version and yes I can play CIV 3 without the original CD. This means the original CD is my backup copy...
