damn. what am i doing wrong?

I can see your map....
it's just you may want to use jpg instead of png format for better compability.

EDIT: A-ha, didn't see AlanH fixed something at the same type while i was typing my message

i personally don't think there's much risk in moving settlers west. up to now i have never had a game on a standard map that placed an AI within 10 tiles of my starting position (maybe once? but very unlikely). and u can trust ainwood will give us something interesting to play and it wouldn't be interesting if all we have are ocean and mountains...

Who ever posted there minimap should have dubbed the other continents out. Just a tid bit i think that will help limit cheating.

dmnankho: thanks for the tip!

You are welcome, and i have a map looking similar to yours, but having such a small island i thought it was a good idea to have very dense city placement.
In other words i have more cities per square mile :-).
I can not bet on it but i think it can be a good idea on such a map.

Here is my continent at the end of the AA:

al_thor : you might want to black out the minimap, its ruining the exploration fun for those who havent had luck with suicide curraghs :nono:

in case you dont have any graphics software, you can do this with M$ Paint if youre using Window$.

grs: Dude - I'm in a Republic!
It was the 1st time that I did the 'Republic Slingshot' and it worked sweet! Growth was awesome in such an early time (430BC).

Predator [c3c] 1.22

I too settled on the BG, I don't mind moving the worker to have a look, but I will generally only move the settler if I can see for sure that there is something good to move into, having read SirPleb's and DaveMcW's reports, I see that I don't quite have this right. What would have happened if there was another little blot of land beyond the moutain?

So I settled on the BG in what? 3950BC, Writing at max, Start work on Caragh, gets built in 3350BC, goes SE as there looks to be something down there. Start on warrior.

2710BC First Settler.

Curagh has now traversed back to the north and skipped across the sea. A second Curagh is going round our Island the other way now. A blue border is spotted.

2630BC Meet Spain and France, sell Pottery for 20 gold

2430BC My first warrior had found the cattle, so the first Settler founds Rotterdam, next to cattle, will palace jump, working on Granary. Will forest chop to speed that up.

2390BC Meet English. We research Writing. Trade it for all level one techs, and Myst and all gold. It never ocurred to me to hold on to it, as I could get good trades, I traded it. I think England had no contacts as I seemed to get it at exclusive rates. Meanwhile we see another border.

2350BC Meet Inca who have HBR, but can't get it.

1575BC Still researching at max, we get COL, and England have MM. We trade for that. And trade it round, get all the cash (295 Gold) and nets us MM, HBR and Maths. Now to Philosophy at max.

1350BC Our Caraghs meet, and there is much celebration. We have mapped the known world, now how about seeing if this Dutch seafaring skill can help us to find if there are unknown worlds far away.

1300BC Philosophy->Republic Slingshot. Nobody else has anything worth trading for. Swtich to Republic 3 turn anarchy.

1250BC Inca come up with Construction, we sell them philosophy and swap for Republic

1225BC We are now a republic. One more settler from Amsterdam and then jump it to Rotterdam.

1175BC Inca come threatening, we let them declare war, not like they will get near us.
First suicide Curagh dies, second suicide Curagh can see Blue borders, but unlikely he'll survive, I just have this feeling.

Now I decide that this is a conquest/dom win, I have the tech I need, so ask France to join the fight to Inca. Lets just weaken everyone, and make it easier to bash them later. Later we get England to join too.

1150BC Caragh survives, guess the seafaring skill works and we meet "Somebody".

1100BC Amsterdam builds a settler and we abandon it, palace jumped to Rotterdam

1000BC With only about 5 cites, we are looking very sorry. I didn't mark down the totals as they are so poor. Our only solace is the luck we've had with tech trading.

900BC For Construction, we get 360 Gold and Poly from "Somebody" and enter MA. Wanted to meet more than "Somebody" first before trading but as soon as I got Currency, I traded into MA, as I wanted to start on the MA techs and get to Chivalry asap.

At this point it does not seem worth doing the usual sword rush, I'll make it a Knight rush. Although not hooked up I'm looking at both the horse and iron islands. I have lots of cash so will be able to rush those harbors. Well that is for the next spoiler.

Overall starting on the BG helped my early tech research (not withstanding going Predator so that the AI actually researched some good stuff for me) and allowed me to trade from strength. Although I had few cities in 1000BC, I wonder what effect this will have in the long run against those with many more, we'll see.

Smackster

[edited out ptw, fixed version]

Don Vito: Sorry about that. I was having issues with the upload and I wasn't thinking about the minimap being shown.

I actually had awesome luck with suicide curraghs - built 3 - lost only 1.

I really like to be called Dude....so

[Sarcasm]Dude! I hope with only little parts of your land worked you did not waste worker turns by working the little part you worked twice [/Sarcasm]

Ummmm....yeah, whatever. I never worked any tile twice. I went to Republic in 1025BC - long before that picture was taken.
What's your score BTW?

Don Vito:
Major Oops! on my part. I was re-reading my notes, and I see that I mis-read them earlier. It was 114G, not 1146. You can see my dyslexia.
