COTM 04 Pre-Game Discussion

Hmm, but then you waste extra worker turns moving the worker back to the wheat or BG, depending upon which you're going to improve first.

I made a test game to practice settler factory. Everything was working fine. After the republic slingshot, I switched to republic. I needed to raise the lux to 20 or 30 for the settler factory to continue to produce because of the lack of military police. It really hurt my gpt and science. Do you always switch to republic after a succesful slingshot ? If you had the choice, would you rather go to monarchy ?

If you've got Polytheism/Warrior Code at the point you learn Philosophy then you can pick Monarchy as your free tech. Are you sure you're worse off in The Republic though? The extra gold earned in The Republic tends to more than make up for the extra required for Lux, assuming your military isn't over-sized.

have to admit that I am a reloader at this point (mostly after those culture-flips that I despise).

The game becomes infinitly more exciting when you don't reload. Thanks GOTM.

As a general rule if at any time you do switch to Republic and find that your overall gold/science situation is worse then you probably have a combination problem of too many units relative to number of cities, you have not developed your city landscape well enough, and you don't have a large enough population in the cities you do have. Clearly having a couple of luxuries hooked up can really help the situation too. Even so, just being in Replublic can help you to get into a more favorable situation relative to gold/science, so even when its makes it worse in the short term its better long term.

Finally with the exclusive rights to Republic you should be able to get all their gold, and I find its worth giving Republic to them all as they will start to generate more gold, and are more likely to give you GPT for your next tech.

I heard a rumour that Dianthus was going to extend CivReplay to incorporate a "what if" situation with government changes, but I think its just a rumour. OK, I'll come clean, I started the rumour :)

That's the 1st I've heard of it! :)

Anyway, I believe ainwood has already done something like this in his CivAssist utility. Check it out <here>

Hi, this is going to be my first Conquests game.
I have a few questions:

- Does anyone know which wonder or wonders will trigger a Golden Age for the Mayans?
- How does the Temple of Artemis work exactly? Do all the free temples generate culture? What if you build a real temple first, do you get culture points from two temples? What happens to the free temples after the Temple of Artemis gets obsolete?

To your first question: Pyramids give an automatic GA for the Mayans, otherwise any combination of an industrious and an agricultural wonder will do just fine...
Second question: You get a free temple in every city on the same continent, IIRC for building the Temple of Artemis. Yes, they generate culture. If there is already a temple in the city, you do NOT get culture for 2 temples. After the wonder becomes obsolete, the temples disappear. You keep thr accumulated culture though...

Hope this helps.

Adding to what Darkness said, Hanging Gardens, Hoover Dam, and the Internet will also give you a GA, the Great Wall and Manhattan Project are industrious, and Universal Suffrage and Cure for Cancer are agricultural.

Welcome to CFC! [party]

Don't you need 2 wonders to kick off the GA? one from each trait?

Many wonders have multiple traits attached to them. The Pyramids, for example, are Industrious/Agricultural.

Thanks. :)

What is a good place to build the Forbidden Palace in Conquests, relative to the palace? It has changed, right?

Yep, the FP has changed. A lot.
In PTW I used to save my first GL for it and build the FP in the core lands of the first AI I took out, giving me an instant second core. Unfortunately? that doesn't work in C3C.
Now I tend to set a city relatively close to the capital to build the FP quite early. The corruption in this city is generally low, so the FP will be built quickly. Because the FP increases the OCN (optimal city number) this will reduce your corruption somewhat throughout your empire, which is an effect you want ASAP. Unfortunately this somewhat reduces the potential of the second effect the FP has. The city that builds it becomes nearly corruption free, but the closer to the capital you are, the smaller this effect is.

Check out >> this post << by SirPleb, especially the part headed "Placement of the FP in Conquests". As a result of this I tend to place my FP right next to my Palace.

Thanks Darkness, Dianthus (and SirPleb). Now I have to decide if I will build the Forbidden Palace first, or try to get another great wonder before the AI does .... :)

The Temple of Artemis seems unattractive now that I know that the culture from the temples does not double, and you can't even build a real temple while it is in effect. Bah. :(

Actually, the Temple of Artemis was one of the key factors in my COTM4. If was so busy adding cities and defenses for them, the Temple of Artemis was the only way for me to get any cultural expansions outside of my core and once I got it, I delayed education as long as possible so that any newly acquired (ie American, Aztec & Spanish) cities would have the chance to get a quick expansion.
