Counter-Strike hacking scandal

I don't understand why some people are so insistent that it's a sport. You don't hear piano players or chefs aggressively trying to convince people their competitions are sports. It's not like being a sport or not changes the worthiness/legitimacy of the competition.

sport said:
an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

You may can argue its not a physical activity, but I've seen plenty of people sweating and you can see what high-level players do on their keyboard in videos. It looks damn tiring to me.

In discussions like these, you probably can just say whatever EG fans think is wrong

I sweat when I sang in a choir for a competition. Did I compete in a sporting event?

You may call it that if you were singing to out-sing another team :p

No, it would be a competition. Competition does not automatically mean sport. Hunting liberals, that's sport. Playing chess or Starcraft, non-sport competition. I do not say this to suggest it is less worthy as a pursuit just because it isn't a sport, but it's just not a sport and it bugs me to see it called that.

All this started when they started calling poker a sport.

After that all bets were off. Farming? Sport. Settlers of Catan? Sport. Competitive pooping? Sport.

Never touch the bronze medals for that last one.

If anything, it's the people opposed to it being referred to as a sport who insist of making an argument out of it.

In this case those who call it a sport brought it up first, as a sport, which it of course isn't, so I had to say "hey wait a second". But I mean, there's a hacking scandal that we should be talking about anyway instead, right? But if that conversation is over, it seems that tangent discussions might as well fill the space.

Well it's a bit hard to discuss the op (didnt watch video) without familiarity w/ fps genre or cs:go or cs:1.16

Because otherwise it's an issue with steam iff cs isnt played in offline mode at dreamhack (dunno how it really works) but i guess the concept can apply to all steam client games. Dunno if LoL has unique game client for their lcs system they have (riot games, the maker of league of legends, has set up an organized format in each region--notth america, europe namely--and have a whole system for qualifying to a world championship. That is organized much differently than other esports that rely on LAN tournaments like dreamhack or online teamleagues or collections of leagues rather than one, consistent league year-round)

I dont know warcraft3 but starcraft brood war, the greatest esport, of course had LAN support and offline play so no hacks could be used. But now major titles sometimes have special competitive clients w/ a local server set up at LANs so that the general game client isnt used

There is not really stopping anything online except hack detection and watchful eyes, just as how it is no different from something like online poker or chess using engines to analyze for you when playing online in their online formats where it might be banned
