Stereotypes aren't generally particularly accurate. You might try finding out a little about Singapore's laws and then guessing why a gay Singaporean might not be entirely happy about Lee. (And I say that as someone who really likes Singapore.)

On the topic of the thread, I'm intrigued and surprised by a lot of the choices, even the non-trolling ones. I notice that one person has been named for my own country who I haven't even heard of.

Well technically Lee Kuan Yew actually supports some gay rights because of its economic benefits...

Plus I hate him more for single handedly crippling the growth and development of Singapore's political system, deciding rather, to let it fester and regress in a mess. It will take 20 years to build up an effective opposition and if Singapore is lucky, free press/ It will take us 20 years just to get rid of the 1st passed the post 5-person constituency. It will take another 30 to reform first past the post so we do not end up as a two-party state and finally, it will take another 50 years to get Singaporeans to be politically minded and active all year round. LKY has wasted three generations of Singaporean politics.

To remain legitimate:

Brazil - Emperor Pedro II
Uganda - Idi Amin
Russia - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Denmark - Empress-Queen Consort Alexandra
Canada - Robin Scherbatsky

A few I could think of on the spot.

Canada-Alanis Morisette
China-Gong Li
Czech Republic-Madeline Albright
Denmark- Brigit Nielsen

New Zealand-Tie between Lucy Lawless and Wing.
Romania- Some famous gymnast.
Somalia-Iman
South Africa- Charlize Theron
Spain- Charo
Sweden- The gal from Roxette
Turkey- Ibrahim Tatlises
Ukraine-Oksana Bayul
United Kingdom- Sarah Ferguson
United States-Little Richard

İbrahim Tatlıses, also known as İbo, is a Turkish pop-folk singer and actor of Kurdish and Arab origin.

Wow!!

Well it is a bit surprising for a Turk to name an Arab/Kurd as the first association with Turkey...

That might have been surprising, yes, if Novakart were a Turk instead of what he actually is, namely, an American who spends a lot of time in Turkey.

really? When you think of The Netherlands you think of Footballplayers?? :(

Why is it so bad? At least no one can remember any Dutch Stalin, or Hitler or Pol Pot. I actually think about Rembrandt when I think Netherlands, not sure why did I mention Tasman. Oh .. now I remember, I was talking to Kiwi/Aussie people right before I created this thread :) Psychoanalysis is a cool discipline ;)

Because there were so many Dutch people who did so much more for The Netherlands or the world for that matter.

and I'm really not sure how to feel about that The Netherlands aren't associated with bad man. Sure we had non as crazy as Stalin, Hitler or Pol Pot but we had our own fair share of war criminals running around in Indonesia...

EDIT: oh right, I am not really fond of the whole idea that football players are among the "greatest" persons of a country/the world :)

Better then William of Orange.

My education begs to differ ;) I myself am not really sure how to think about the guy.
As a Dutchman I'm very biased :P (I believe I saw a discussion about this somewhere in this forum... ;))

anyway, please enlighten a one sided educated Dutchman ;)

Actually the association each of us makes doesn't deppend on who did "the most" and who was greatest. It is more closely related to the interest and education of a person. A football player/fan is very likely to accosiate with a football player first or a fan of arts is likely to accosiate with an artist(painter, musician etc.) first.
A person without interest in history would less likely associate with a historical figure.

true, true... still this is the world history forum and as such I expected people with a bit more historical value :)

I think of William III of England. Is that better?

how much I like sports, imo everything is better than a sportsman/woman :p

Not when we're asked for the first person we think of. Which is how Gong Li and Ziyi Zhang get mentioned for China and Nevena Tsoneva for Bulgaria.
