Crashing to Desktop...

Any news on possible fixes? it looks like a memory leak problem and nothing graphical which causes it.

What happens is when you scroll around any fogged areas it instantly crashes to desktop as if you were never playing to begin with. It sucks, but whats worse, sometimes it does it if you're scrolling around your own territory or moving units and whatnot.

That's what my desktop looks like after a crash. If I open up another program full screen it clears up.

Mine crashed too. I had about 30 turns left and it crashed to my desktop.

Now the game crashes after it loads the map, etc. I reinstalled twice and nothing works.

I have the same problem with an NVidia 6600, crashing to desktop after 15-20 turns. Tried the 81.85 and the 81.87 bata driver and still the problem percists. 1GB of ram and 3.2 Pentium. My pissed-off meter is like at 10.

I've had the same problem. Seems to just randomly crash to the desktop. The wierd thing is that it only happens on the second game I had started, but since starting yet another game, it works without any problems.

I've also got an nVidia 6600...

First, I had the "black map" problem, so I upgraded to the latest 8.1.8.5 drivers from nvidia. Everything worked fine for about 8 hours, but now I get nothing but sudden crashes to the desktop. I don't see anything useful in the logs.

System:
MSI Mega 180 / AMD Athlon 3000+
NVidia GeForce4 Integrated GPU

Wow... even more weird, it also happens only on my second game, and I haven't had any problem yet with my third one. It really pisses me off to have to abandon this game though, I was doing quite well :(
Now... maybe it will eventually happen with this game too, since I'm not as far as I was on the other.

With an Ati Radeon 9600 (mobility).

I increased my Virtual memory to 4 gigs, and it still crashes....so it makes me think that the crashing isn't related to a memory leak.

Exact same problem here. I have a sapphire ati radeon x300se 128 meg video card. (PCI express x 16)

"Where's the money Lebowski?"

My game crashes in the 20th century around 1900 On a Huge terra World It suddenly stops playing and CTD I have a nvidia 5700 PentiumIV 2.38 GHz 1 gig memory All my drivers are up to date Very disturbing

First it's the black background, and I needed a video card... thanks Dell for the integrated (read: crappy) Invidia. (Dude! You're gettin' a pile of junk!)

Now this... it just crashes to the desktop with no warning at all. C'mon, didn't they test this thing at all?! I really love the game (What I've managed to play), but I've about had it. I may get my $49.95 back, and buy it for $20 less once all the fixes are out.

got a crash too...first I got rebooting PC when i hit the F5 button..i figured out just to play without the F5 button...then after reloading the autosave i got the desktop-crash at...hmmm..2 or 3turns later..this is my 2nd game too..but my first was on a small map, this on a large map...loading the game i hear my HDD going nuts to load it...maybe there is some fault at the memory-program they did in the game..normally this kinda behaviour is not possible in object programming since windows should reservate memory adresses for each object seperatly so you can't overwrite values with different routines, however, if you set the memory on global..you could ie, set the memory value of the axemen attack to the gold-reserve you have..but only a newbie would make such programming failure i think :)) so...it doesnt matter how many memory you have..even if you install 4Gigs! :) if you overwrite some memory adresses which shouldnt be used by that routine..dang, unrecoverable error! and only god knows what will happen :) I hope this errori sticks to my 2nd game and doesnt show up on my 3,4....100th games :)

I don't crash during the game, although I did once when I played a multiplayer game. I do crash whenever I try to load any saved game, even one that I just loaded and saved without every taking even a single turn.

You guyes should try to _disable_ the autosaves. It solved all my random crash/reboot problems. Quite the contradiction I know ... but until a fix arrives Ill have to save manually.

Edit in /gamedir/_Civ4Config,

AutoSaveInterval = 0

[edit]: started a new game, got the old problems back again ... random crash to desktop. CRAP! [/edit]

I also get my desktop looking garbled like this, sometimes, when I exit the game normally via EXIT TO DESKTOP.

I've been having the crash to desktop problem a lot of people have been reporting. (After going through the hoops of unpacking all the assets to even play the game.)

A quick look at the readme reveals:

"If you are experiencing sound problems, including volume issues, missing audio channels (i.e., no sound comes through your center speaker channel), crashes, or any other audio issues, we recommend switching your sound driver to the default MILES Fast 2D Driver."

Problem is, I can't even figure out where to set this. Anyone have an idea?

Dang! I have had a crash-free game going and then, on the turn when I finished researching Scientific Method, the voice announcement began, no "completion screen" yet, and it crashed HARD. It took me several re-boots just to get my machine running again. I'm reluctant to even re-start the game again.

The only thing that was happening of note was that, I owned the Great Library which would become obsolete with Sci-Method.

Oh, well, I suppose that I'll start a new game as I was kicking the AI's butt on Noble anyway. Time to step it up a notch.

I have the same card by BFG 6600 GT OC and never had it crash to desktop, did many turns almost done with the tut...

I haven't seen this reported yet, but I get a crash straight to desktop, too, but in a very specific instance. I'm playing France, and if I automate a worker NEAR the city of Rheims, it will crash to desktop. It doesn't matter if the worker was built in Rheims or not.

It doesn't happen near the other cities. Very strange.
