Crashing to Desktop...

I haven't seen this reported yet, but I get a crash straight to desktop, too, but in a very specific instance. I'm playing France, and if I automate a worker NEAR the city of Rheims, it will crash to desktop. It doesn't matter if the worker was built in Rheims or not.

It doesn't happen near the other cities. Very strange.

Hey, it's reproducable. That's the first good thing I've heard.

Anything strange about this particular city? What's built in it? What's the population size and distribution of specialists? How close does the worker have to get? Is the worker entering an unmodified square, or potentially replacing another feature? What number city is Rheims on your list (i.e., how many cities have been founded before it, and after it, before the problem starts appearing?)

Why yes, my day job is Software QA. :)

this is sort of what happens to me it crashed so i loaded it and it crashed on the same turn 3 times in a row,my main city is size 12 and the rest are lower, sometimes it's completly random but i may be wrong there must be something in the game/.engine makingit crash when someone builds something, moves somewhere, all i can say ius they should of tested it more and i'm glad i didn't spend 50$ on it.

I'm having problems loading a new game of Epic and Huge - probably a virtual memory thing. The game may actually load the map, but shortly thereafter a crash to desktop.

I have a game save that randomly crashes when I try to do things, but it will always crash when I try to spread religion using a Christian missionary.
Makes me think the save games are getting corrupted somehow.

I've been experiencing the desktop crash issue, oh about every half hour or so once I get past the early stages of the game. Seems to be related to sound card/driver. Any ideas? The game is great, but this is really, really annoying! Ive got a geForce 6200 with 256MB DDR, 512 RAM and a pentium 4. Just how many resorces does this game really need to run well??!!

rheims is written with a "h"?? thought it was just reims, but maybe it's only on the dutch maps :)

eh about crashes to desktop..to me they look random, and moreover, when i load a savegame..i never got the crash at the same point..normally i get a crash first after playing some hours..2 or 3..switching to desktop and back is also casuing crashes..i noticed while having winamp in the background i get a windows message telling me insufficient resources( 1024 DDR 400, P4 2,8GHz, Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB) with MSNmessenger the same, i get some strange error message...i never ever got any problems with MSN!! only with this game.

When I first tried to automate a worker near this city, it only had a road going to it. I could then reproduce it many times with/without other improvements around. The worker only needs to be in the city's control region -- doesn't have to be next to the city. It would have been city #2 or #3 (I forget).

I finally gave up on that game, as I continued having other CTD's -- that was the only one I could really ID and duplicate. (Habit; I'm a software developer.) However, I have had no other CTD's in several games. It was the only game where I played France, and also the only game where I allowed the computer to assign me a random civ (via the Custom Game option).

A lot of variations in there, unfortunately.

Yeah. Feh. Oh well. Gives me a starting point if I go home and decide I want to do my job for free.

Don't suppose you still have a save?

Ok so far i've solved my crashes to desktop I have a geforce 6200 750 odd mb of ram 3.0ghz P4ht i increased my virtual ram to 2gig and i managed to play an entire game without crashing i have researched all technology's (al;trhough there is NO uranium or oil on my map) and have traveled the world this must be a memory leak or something.

Maybe. Are you a glutton for punishment? :D

Is this related to people starting a 2nd game?

I had no crashes in my first game. Now, into my 2nd game, it randomnly crashes when i instruct my worker to do some action.

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. While trying to reproduce the error, I am getting too many CTD's to even get there. I can't even click on the worker now without getting the crash. Feh!

France is the only Civ I've had these symptoms with. I've attached an autosave file that's the one I've been (not) playing with.

I increased my Virtual memory to 4 gigs, and it still crashes....so it makes me think that the crashing isn't related to a memory leak.

Maybe not the crashing, but there IS a memory leak in the game as evident to the slow down over time. If anyone ever played the retail version of "Birth of the Federation," you know what a really bad memory leak looks like.

yes it is with later games that I started randomly crashing to desktop.
Worker actions and things like missionary spreading religion crash to desktop randoml or repeatably depending on the game/action

Nothing in the log files that makes any sense

When I first played the game, I ran the tutorial. I left the house (for a few minutes) and left the game on because of the auto victory bug. 4 hours later I came back. The game was still running and at full speed at that.

During my second game it crashes to desktop quite often. I would say it does so about every 30 minutes. It has crashed on a wonder movie, on a religion discovery video, upon completing a unit, and then other times. It seems that it can happen any time the game tries to change the camera in some way. The game runs very well and I have no issues at all other than this CTD phenomenon. In fact, game installed w/o prompting for DirectX install and it works. Also, I did not have to use the ATI fix. I also am not running the absolutely most current drivers as I find that running the newest ones creates more issues than running the most recent ones from my manufacturer.

Hoepfully, they track the issue down.

System (for those collecting info):
AMD 64 3000+
AC97 Onboard Sound
MSI 9800Pro Plus 128Meg (9800 XT gpu basically)

crashes occur random too me, on smaller maps i don't get any crashes at all, the bigger the map the more the crashes occur..and civ is leaving around 10-30megs left of my physical memory after some time of playing..have 1024Megs RAM

Yeah, but not that sort. ;)

Seriously, the day job has been making me cranky enough that I've gone back to Warcraft III until a patch comes out. But maybe I'll get ambitious this weekend--project from hell releases in a few hours.

I'm playing on a standard map with the highlands option. I'm in the 1700's and having CTD's about every 2-5 turns now. Graphics are turned to medium and a lot of the animations, etc are turned off. Still crashes. Very strange. I'll post the latest save in case Firaxis or someone wants it.
A very fun and addictive game...I like it very much. Just frustrated by the crashes. Patiently awaiting the patch(es).
