Crashing to Desktop...

Got a computer yesterday and played CIV 4 for 5 hours today with no lag no hicups no problems at all. Then out of the blue I had a crash to desktop. This most likely a RAM memory leak. Any thing you can do to min. RAM use will make the game run better longer. ( turn off movies, autosave, unit animations, ect.)

Same problem here. The first game went just fine, but in the second game I encountered more and more crashes until at present I cannot even load up the game - it crashes before completing the save game load and game initialisation...

Also, the last crash actually restarted my computer...

I REALLY hope they come out with a patch soon that will take care of this problem...

There is no question that it is the big games that CTD with me.

I have a P4 dual processer 3.2ghz i gig ram, Nvidia 6600, XP. Brand new...one week old.

All games are fine until the whole map is revealed then either click on the mini-map or scroll with the cursor at the edge of the screen back to Desk. Usually happens after 1880, but never get a game going beyond 1970 without a crash every turn. (Huge Terra, random nationalities).

Have done the cache thing and the Unpak thing.

I agree with that, and the worst thing you can do, is too trade world maps :( .

It reminds me about two other games in the past, AOE3 and Railroad tycoon2. Both game with the same problem. In AOE3 it could happen if you modded your own maps. Bad textures triggered the crash, and the only way to solve it was to find the bad tile. And yes, only a single tile could ruin the map, and it was not easy too find it. The same thing happened in RT2, sometime you had too start all over again and begin too make a new map from scratch, with large maps it became even worse.
I don't know if it is a texture problem in civ4, but in both games the same error was happen when you scrolled over the map, crash too desktop.

Have now tried increasing the minimum virtual memory to 2 gigs and it seems to be working. I left the max virtual memory at 3 gigs.

No crashes yet.

It is painfully clear that they never proffesionally beta tested this game. If the crashes and bugs aren't enough, check the back of your manual: Everyone listed under "Beta Testing" is the name of an internet handle. Pfft.

Aye, and those people are aledgedly on here or the other forum that I posted the issue on. And guess what? - Yep, NOTHING from them.

It seems that the first game is fine, the second a mybe, and then the more games you play, the worse it gets....

Yet, STILL no word form the people whos pockets we've lined...

So much for Sid and his cronies being the caring sharing that we read about in the back of the manual....:(

As Colfan just stated a couple of posts back, he changed his virtual memory settings and its now OK.

Yes the game eats memory like there is no tomorrow, but that is just the nature of the beast, as time goes by it has to keep track of more stuff.

Make sure your memory settings are appropriate. You'll still get slow downs late game due to swapping to disk (increasing your chip ram will stop this), but it shouldnt crash.

Re the virtual memory "fix":

Game has now resumed crashing in the original manner. No more play for me until I have the patch.

:(

I sincerely hope this patch that got pulled back will be re-released soon and that it addresses the crash to desktop prblem......

Absolutely disgusted with this software release.

Had been looking forward to it for a long time and it is unplayable.

I meet the minimum specs (with a fair bit to spare) but I have played several games and all have crashed out to windows on the production of a wonder (not always the first wonder - this time it was Angkor Wat and I already had 7/8 wonders)

Restarting windoze / reloading still caused the same problems.

Patches to fix gameplay bugs I could have waited for but I have never ever bought a game which has been unplayable from the start before.

I have been a software developer for 15 years and if I ever released an application as buggy as this I would have been sacked long ago.

A shame as Civ has been a favourite for a long time , but I don't have the patience to persist with this.

May be back if I see encouraging news on this list but somehow I doubt it

Cheerio all - nice knowing you :)

STILL no "official" response.

DEFO no care going on here. What do they care if we don't play the game? We've already bought it and thus lined their pockets.... :(

MY version 1.00 used to crash to desktop now and then...

My version 1.09 crashes to the desktop, turns it to 800x600 and 4 colours and forces me to restart the computer.

At least they managed to do something to the problem...

Oh, crap. Just started the game and found out that it can still do the old-fashioned clean crash to the desktop as well.

The problem is that they are more common now than they were under 1.00...

After installing the 1.09 version the game got a lot more unstable than before. I had to install it via CivFanatics download as the built-in updater could not download the patch at all. Now it halts the computer if I try to open city screen (not always though) and sometimes halts when I try to end the turn. Also, it seems to lag lot more than before. I think I have to revert back to 1.0 just to be able to play the game. I am not very happy with their Q&A in producing this patch...

used to have a lot of reboots  but now after installing the patch -after a fresh install- i got this message:
AppName: civilization4.exe AppVer: 1.0.9.1722 ModName: civilization4.exe
ModVer: 1.0.9.1722 Offset: 00596f61
and my the first ctd of the day.
my system is:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 10 Stepping 0 AuthenticAMD ~2290 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe ACPI BIOS Rev 1013, 12-11-2004
SMBIOS Version 2.2
Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 620.34 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 2.40 GB

so whats up, don't tell me i've got to wait till the next patch. i've been waiting since day one.

Whoops didn't see this thread before I posted my own.

I have the same problem, crashes in 1.09 are more frequent than in 1.00 - and I know get the error message and resolution change so I have to reboot. I kinda preferred just crashing to desktop without tinkering with my resolution ;)

I agree 100%.

This is how a legendary pc game dies.

I'm crashing when I play. Can't get the patch everytime i try the game crashes. Dell system, nothing overclocked or out there fx5200, gig of ram, 3ghz P4, sounblaster. Runs EQ2, WoW, Age of empires 3 just fine. This baby is going back real quick if I can't play it.
