Breaking News: Argentina Invades Paraguay!
Hundreds of Argentine planes took to the skies and crossed into Paraguayan air space. Flying low to prevent radar detection they immediately began to strike air bases, army bases, and government buildings. Within minutes bombs were falling and blinding flashes and airbursts light up the night skies of Paraguay. Paraguayan anti-aircraft guns uselessly blazed away with tracers cutting a path through the night sky.
The bombings must have lasted a few hours went it was over all that was left was the burning twisted wreckage of the Paraguayan Air Force. Not a single plane managed to make it into the air.
The Argentines then turned their attention to army bases and government buildings. By dawn there wasnt a single left standing in the entire nation.
Our reporters have managed to capture these shocking images at great risk to their own lives.
Once the bombings had ceased that was when the Argentine army invaded. From what we have managed to gather forces invaded Paraguay from the southwest rapidly driving forward with little resistance.
From the south another force drove directly for the capital.
After the devastating bombing campagain what was left of the Paraguayan Army retreated north and holed up in the city. There they waited for the Argentines.
The Paraguayan Army ambushed the Argentines and bloody street battles occurred throughout the city. Paraguayan soldiers holed up in buildings and in some parts of the city hand to hand fighting occurred. Little by little the Paraguayan soldiers were pushed back.
It was not until the Argentine Air Force had returned home and refueled could air strikes be carried out and claim lay on the city.
With that battle the Paraguayan army was crushed and the capital occupied government buildings were surrounded. Government members were imprisoned and placed under house arrest. Any resistance toward Argentine control brutally put down sometimes with people even being shot in the streets.
The President of Paraguay Juan Ezcurra fled the country before the Argentine army arrived and took a sizable chunk of the treasury with him.
Our reporters tracked him down to Brazil Rio de Janeiro where we caught him in an Air France terminal. When questioned he said that he was going into exile in France. When we asked about the money he became flustered and left.
Hundreds of refugees fleeing from the Argentine army as they establish their control in the north have gone to Brazil. The Brazilians to their credit have opened up their border and let them through. Refugee camps have been established and foreign aid workers as well as our reporters are down there as we speak.
It is estimated that civilian casualties could be in the tens of thousands. Mostly as a result of the massive bombing campaign and street battles. The type of bombs used by the Argentine Air Force were free fall bombs so it is expected that civilian casualties could have been as high as 30,000. We will likely never know for sure.
Brazil has condemned the invasion and demanded Argentine withdrawal. The Brazilian-Argentine border has also been more heavily fortified. It is possible Brazil may intervene since it considers Paraguay an important buffer state. If that happens needless to say this war could grow to involve all of South America.
Here is a transcript for the speech of the Argentine president
" People of Argentina, tonight we celebrate another gain for the workers. After many meetings and discussions with the Secretary of Health and Education he has agreed to drastically lower the cost of tuition at all National Universities, as well as provide free meals to all enrolled students of public schools. These will provide monetary gains for all workers as well as better access to higher levels of education."
"Unfortunately, it saddens me to report that our neighbors in Paraguay have betrayed us. In recent months we have received scattered intelligence that reports weapons and aid are being supplied by the government of Paraguay to rebels in northern Argentina, causing rebellions and riots in our northern provinces. The only purpose of these unlawful tactics is to destabilize Argentina and cause her government to collapse. As President of Argentina and sworn protectorate of her people, I cannot allow this. I ask for your full support of the events to come in the following months, to stand strong by your country and government. Only together can we defeat this new enemy and protect the sovereignty of our country and the stability of South America. With that, I bid you good night."
