CTIV-6: Germs! Germs Everywhere!

I'm posting a turnlog five turns in as a lot has gone on and I think discussion is needed. Here's the log, which pretty much sais it all.

Turn 370 (1960 AD)
JOE's comment: Goals for this turnset are:
JOE's comment: Research Internet after Fibre Optics (starting after I click the big red button).
JOE's comment: Get that transporter of spies off to lizzy, and carry on building some more.
JOE's comment: Take out New Sarai and Karkarom, then peace for Rocketry.
JOE's comment: Go to organised religion.
JOE's comment: Hook Aluminium back up.
JOE's comment: Spies are on the way and will be landing in three turns east of Nottingham. Two will be sent east, two west.
JOE's comment: I start moving troops to New Sarai from around the Beshbalik area.
Tech learned: Fiber Optics
Rome finishes: Tank
Pharsalos finishes: Observatory
Athens finishes: Artillery

Turn 371 (1961 AD)
Research begun: Refrigeration
Research begun: Genetics
Rome begins: Tank
Pharsalos begins: Laboratory
Athens begins: Marine
JOE's comment: Oh, and indeed, crap.
JOE's comment: So, Catherine has declared which calls for a slight change of plan...let's try for peace with Kublai right now...
JOE's comment: OK. Peace with Kublai but he wouldn't give us rocketry for it, so I change research to rocketry.
Research begun: Rocketry
JOE's comment: Thermapolae is being bombarded from the seas by a Battleship and Destroyer, down to 39%...what Navy do we have...
JOE's comment: Er...1 Transporter? Oh ****.
Thermopylae begins: Battleship
JOE's comment: Thermapolae is now building a Battleship...hope it comes in time (6 turns).
Rome begins: Battleship
Rome begins: Battleship
JOE's comment: Rome is given orders to cancel the tank and to build two Battleships in 2 and 3 turns.
JOE's comment: I'm checking the area around the transporter to see if it's in danger of being destroyed...can't see an units nearby. If that's sunk, we're screwed.
JOE's comment: Check coastal city defenses to see how they'd cope against landing parties...thankfully it looks pretty good.
JOE's comment: Apart from Neapolis. I'm sending units there now.
JOE's comment: Actually, our coastal city defenses suck. Time for some unit rearranging.
JOE's comment: I've split our more modern troops as best I can to coastal cities as a pre-emptive measure against landing parties...all I can do now is wait.
Sparta finishes: Granary
Corinth's borders expand

Turn 372 (1962 AD)
Sparta begins: Grocer
JOE's comment: It seems cathy has given up on Thermopylae and has another two units bombarding Corinth instead. Down to 51% at the moment.
JOE's comment: Our transport arrives in England.
JOE's comment: Nope, we really don't want to war with Liz (see screenshot).
JOE's comment: Spies are offloaded and the Transporter sent back to Neapolis for safety.
JOE's comment: Landed on Aluminium for a start and there is Uranium to the west of Nottingham...good a place as any to start.
Rome finishes: Battleship
Transport loses to: Russian Destroyer (26.10/30)

Turn 373 (1963 AD)
JOE's comment: Transporter go boom!
JOE's comment: As you can tell, from that (^), Cathy is giving us a slapping and there's nothing we can do about it. One Battleship has been built however.
JOE's comment: Let's have al ook at Nottingham (screenshot).
JOE's comment: Two Uranium and Two Aluminium resources, one of each we know where they are.
JOE's comment: 2 turns away from SS Life Support! Sabotage that for a start...here goes nothing.
JOE's comment: Or not...it'll cost 2620 gold...let's just find those resources in a hurry.
JOE's comment: We've taken out both Uranium resources and 1 aluminium. I'm lowering research so I have enough money next turn to take out the last aluminium.
JOE's comment: This should prevent Liz completing SS Life Support at least for a while. 40% research for one turn.
Battleship promoted: Combat I
Battleship loses to: Russian Destroyer (11.10/30)
JOE's comment: Our brand new Battleship didn't fare too well despite good odds.
Antium finishes: Laboratory
Cumae finishes: Factory
Athens finishes: Marine

Turn 374 (1964 AD)
Antium begins: Battleship
Cumae begins: Battleship
Athens begins: Observatory
JOE's comment: Rome is Building the Internet by the way as our top production city (16 turns) this will go up as starvation is hitting due to Catherine's ransacking of workboats.
JOE's comment: Pumped up to 50% research.
JOE's comment: That should be all the "big" resources taken out...let's have another look in Newcastle.
JOE's comment: Let's see if we can't take out her two Oil deposits as well.
JOE's comment: SS Engine in 14 at London. Hopefully our sabotage will change that.
Shangian finishes: Laboratory
Pharsalos grows: 15
Pharsalos finishes: Laboratory

Turn 375 (1965 AD)
Shangian begins: Hydro Plant
Pharsalos begins: Bank
JOE's comment: Well, taking our Aluminium and Uranium seems to have slowed down absolutely nothing...huh? She's finished Life Support...
JOE's comment: ...and SS Engine is 13 turns away.

So, I'm at a bit of a loss for the next five turns...the save is the beginning of 1965. I don't really understand why taking out all her Aluminium and Uranium resources has slowed nothing down. I can't see that she's trading it anywhere. The only thing I can think to do is lower Research & Culture to bring in a big chunk of cash over the next few turns, and spend it sabotaging SS Engine and whatever else is being built (only 56% chance of success last time I checked).

The fact Catherine is kicking the crap out of us and getting rid of all our workboats is causing starvation all over the place, and we've nothing to go at her with.

We're fooked.

Damn, maybe we should've declared on FDR when Cathy asked us to.

Aluminum increases the speed at which parts are built, but it's not required to build them. We can slow her down, but we can't stop her.

Anybody we can get into war with Cathy? Maybe Toku?

... Gang, don't worry if we lose this one. Liz had the perfect starting location: nice-sized island she was able to populate all by herself while still getting immediate contact with most other Civs. Throw in the fact that we were squeezed in with Alex, Toku, and Kublai (how did we end up not going to war with Toku?!?), and it was going to be tough to win this one.

That being said, it ain't over until the fat lady launches. I would go back to building the Internet, drop science to 0%, build boats in the outlying cities and troops on the inner ones (are we in Theocracy? Maybe we should go back to that?), and fund the spies as much as possible. Keep Aluminum disconnected and keep an eye on the builds; we don't need to stop all the parts--just the last one.

I'll have a look to see if I can get anyone to war with Cathy.

I did dribble a bit when I started exploring Lizzy's land with the spies...lucky cow. We're building the Internet in Rome at the moment, and given our war situation I decided to stick with Theocracy. I'll drop Science to zero and let the spies ransack as much as possible, especially happy and health resources...causing starvation in a few big cities should slow things down a bit more as well.

Is there an easy way to check what parts she has left to build for the ship so I Know if and when she gets to the last one?

Just check the victory conditions. It'll show what parts she has built. You should also be able to see if she's got Fusion since we have Fiber Optics by looking at the Diplo screen.

Ouch!
Cathy declaring was not what I wanted to read about. #¤%###%

Taking out all of Lizzies health and happyness resources is the way to go. I found that that is slowing the AI down more than sabotaging the strategical resources or space ship parts. After the resources, we need to pay the big money for the parts though.

That sounds like a heck of plan ~ hopefully it would drop her cities' pop awful quickly...how much does it cost to sabotage??

i don't think declaring on cathy when fdr asked us would've made much of a difference...maybe we would've had a better navy and *maybe* Khan wouldn't've declared, but it may have been much worse if we were looking north and mongol troops just steamed rolled across the border

Turn 375 (1965 AD)
JOE's comment: OK...round two...
JOE's comment: Lizzt hasn't hooked Alu nor Uranium back up yet although there is a worker next to Nottingham's Uranium. Keep an eye on that.
JOE's comment: Not enough cash to take out any resources this turn.
JOE's comment: One spy is hanging waiting to sabotage Spices outside Canterbury.
JOE's comment: Another is waiting to take out Cows at Newcastle.
JOE's comment: Yet another waiting to take out Furs.
JOE's comment: Another waiting to take out more Spices...Lizzy as alot of Spices.
JOE's comment: Scratch that, the fourth Spy is sitting on Corn waiting to take that out.
JOE's comment: Research to 0% means we'll be able to take out three of the four resources next turn. I'll leave research at 0% for two turns and pump it back up as Rocketry is now in 43.
JOE's comment: Lizzy has Fusion.
JOE's comment: Lizzy needs Engine, Cockpit and Stasis Chamber. She has built everything else, and we know Engine is about 13 turns away.

Turn 376 (1966 AD)
JOE's comment: Catherine continues her bombardment...still no sign of any Transporters heading our way though...that's fine...bombard away.
JOE's comment: Roosevelt declares on Catherine for the price of Ecology. Hopefully that'll get her off our backs for a bit as they're next door neighbours.
JOE's comment: Bye-bye Corn...
JOE's comment: Bye-Bye Furs...
JOE's comment: Bye-Bye Cows...
JOE's comment: Let's see what Canterbury is up to.
JOE's comment: Airport in 3 at Canterbury.
JOE's comment: ****...SS Cockpit in 4 at Coventry.
Antium finishes: Battleship
Athens finishes: Observatory

Turn 377 (1967 AD)
Antium begins: Battleship
Athens begins: Battleship
Battleship promoted: Combat I
Battleship promoted: Combat II
JOE's comment: Catherine has just completed the Apollo Program as well...bloody hell.
Battleship loses to: Russian Battleship (17.20/40)
JOE's comment: Newcastle building Airport in 2.
JOE's comment: Oxford building a Supermarket in 8.
JOE's comment: Hasting building a Supermarket in 4. This could be due to us sabotaging her health resources.
JOE's comment: London is on the SS Engine in 12.
JOE's comment: Workers are hooking Alu and Uranium back up.
Antium finishes: Battleship
Shangian finishes: Hydro Plant
Sparta grows: 3
Pharsalos finishes: Bank
Delphi finishes: University
Thermopylae finishes: Battleship
Samarqand finishes: Grocer

Turn 378 (1968 AD)
Antium begins: Battleship
Shangian begins: Wall Street
Pharsalos begins: Market
Delphi begins: Laboratory
Samarqand begins: Bank
JOE's comment: Nottingham is building a Coal Plant in 2.
Battleship promoted: Drill I
Battleship promoted: Combat I
Battleship promoted: Combat I
Battleship defeats (36.00/40): Russian Frigate
JOE's comment: Can't raise enough money in time to sabotage the SS Cockpit. 3325!
Battleship defeats (8.80/40): Russian Destroyer
Battleship loses to: Russian Destroyer (16.20/30)

Turn 379 (1969 AD)
Old Sarai begins: Courthouse
JOE's comment: Lots more sabotage, but I think saving for the parts is the only option now or we'll never be able to afford it.
Antium finishes: Battleship

Turn 380 (1970 AD)
Antium begins: Battleship
Battleship promoted: Combat I
Battleship promoted: Combat II
JOE's comment: Lizzy is building United Nations in York (13 turns).
JOE's comment: Catherine is beating us in the Space Race. Even if we stop Lizzy, Cathy will beat us...we wouldn't get past her forces to get Transporters of spies to her lands.
JOE's comment: Newcastle is building SS Stasis Chamber (15 turns), and London the Engine (11 turns). So, in fifteen turns she will win unless we save the cash to sabotage, which may need more than one expensive attempt. Save hard!
JOE's comment: I have put research to 60% for Rocketry in 2. I suggest as soon as Rocketry is in, Research goes back down so we can save somewhere in the region of 7000 gold in the next ten turns.

I'm not sorry to be handing this over (save).

Reet in summary;

Lizzy requires SS Engine (11 turns - London) and SS Stasis Chamber (15 turns - Newcastle)

Sabotaging these parts costs well over 3000 for (at last look) a 56% chance of success...not good. Research has been raised and should stay there for a couple of turns to allow us to at least start building the Apollo Program. Then drop it...we need at least 7000 in the next 10 turns to take out the parts. If they don't succeed in sabotaging then we are screwed.

If we manage to control Lizzy's Space Race, we will need to do the same to Cathy as she has completed an SS Casing.

At least I got Roosevelt to declare on Cathy, although it hasn't taken any heat off us yet.

I don't understand Cathy's need to bombard us with no troops heading our way to "clean up".

FDR is down to like 1 or 2 cities, I don't think he's going to put much of a dent in Cathy.

Cathy is likely behind us in techs, we don't need to panic about her. I would think we should keep research at 0% and hope when Internet comes in we hear a lot of Nimoy's voice.

Internet is due in 10 (probably 11 after starvation). SS Chamber due in 14. We need to keep Aluminum offline, so we should probably place a spy on the two aluminum sites and the two SS building cities. Don't worry about the Uranium.

I have some problems playing during the next days. I might get a chance Friday afternoon/evening, but that is far from sure.

If Gaspar can take it before, please do so and skip me.

skip you? You mean you don't want a shot at stopping Liz?!? ;)

Gaspar~, can you swap with Sina?

It's not so much that I don't want to, but that my dear husband is enjoying his easter break instead of working. If you can come up with a way to get him out of the house or me a laptop that doesn't crash at the sight of CIV, I'd love to take my turns.

hubby doesn't let you play? or do you do the whole "spend time together" thing?

It's his computer. I have it when he's at work and when he's sleeping, but when he's at home it's his if he wants to play. He also plays CIV, but *not very good*. I had a tutor game with him some time ago and he was so astonished what I could do with a stack of mixed units. He never built cats, you know. :)
He's a better Bridge player than I am though and beat me a Scrabble today (though it was not in my native language).
