Culture Database

Just a quick thing, I noticed that a lot of cultural requirements don't make too much sense (for example Deer for the Bedouin people, Fish for a landlocked culture or beavers for kitara), in ideas can i suggest other resources? in the idea one of course

Yes, Eventually.

It will be another spreadsheet though. Too many different attributes to add here.

Heroes will also need some WIKI-ing to match their use to their history.
It's Fun but time consuming.

First gonna finish the cultural units.

If anybody has objections to my ratings, please write so in the notes column behind it =)

so should I just keep a doc of it or make a new thread or what? cause I currently just from the African cultures up to L i found 10 cultures with stuff which didn't make sense (not including units)

Some mismatched resources are animal equivalents.

Early europe had 'Bisents' which were basicly Bisons. And the Bedouin people could hunt deerlike creatures like gazelles that live in/around the desert.
Some are just silly though.

Well the Bedouin people mainly used camels for almost everything, like they were the people who infamously helped T.E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) go through the Empty Quarter with camels, they lived oasis to oasis by using camels etc. or for the Aka people who were almost completely hunter gatherer needing potatoes, something which can be classified as potatoes instead of Barley or Wheat or Corn did not exist in Africa until the Portuguese bring it back in the 1500s

No, the other file is for the current versions. Ill check.

Something not really possible to put in my changes is that some cultures in there weren't really cultures for example Kenya whilst a country it is made up of a lot of different cultures kinda smashed together, I don't think that is deserving of a culture just as great british isn't a culture

You are absolutely correct.

A culture is far more easy to discern earlier in history. With globalization and free travel culture loses all boundries, if it really had any to begin with.
For now though, i'll look at the 'nation cultures' the same as the others. For most it is still easy to find a historical hero character and a good time or tech spot.
I believe the 'idea' project is meant to further work with cultures and religions, but i don't know the specifics of that plan.

For this Database project we should keep it clean and structured.
I want all cultures to have the proper metrics and background and cultural bonuses that are historical-ish.
What we can implement is off course another thing, but this database at least gives a thorough base.

I intend for countries to be represented as cultures even though we may be able to determine a distinction to an extent. Since eventually civs will adopt their culture and be known as that nation while they have it adopted, this does actually fit to run it this way.

You guys should chime in on the Ideas project thread. I just bumped it over the weekend. There's a lot explained there.

This is all great work, IMO, but I'd like to try to get @Hydromancerx to review any change suggestions so he can explain his reasons for certain choices. @Sparth also made a lot of these and maybe he can find cause to comment. I'm... not ambivelent but I trust enough that those who care deeply to analyze and research deeply are those I trust to guide improvement courses to existing material where I'm not able to invest the time to look too deeply myself.

All units are added to the database and rated.

There are many units that are not implemented, they lack any uniqueness. Almost all traders.
There are also a lot of units that are based on old incarnations of other units like almost all axemen, those are severely underpowered.
For some units the civilopedia text gives the intention or old intention what the unit did or was supposed to do. But they are now incorrect.

There is 1 unit, the scottish Highmen, that is simply bugged. You can build an army of those cheaper then you could build the first gun unit. This one needs to be fixed soon.

Restructured some.

Added space next to all the units so you can see which ones NEED fixing, and room to place your ideas. have fun =)

How comfortable are you with XML? Would you be willing to work on tweaking these? I'd want you to record what you want to do to correct them first, and down the road, some changes to core units may come up again that cause the need for some further reevaluation.

But I strongly feel we've needed a monitor on these units for a long time anyhow. This would really streamline things for us to work together because this way I can adjust a core group of units and then turn the uniques over to you to adjust in turn. None of that would be stuff that happens overnight for the core now but I still can't tell you how useful it would be to have someone managing all the uniques when I DO need to adjust balance at the core. That's a whole world of stuff to maintain there.

We also have some other discussed ways we could work with cultural benefits... special buildings, promotions etc... And maybe we could use those to help with balancing out the cultures even deeper as we go here. Again, nothing to charge into but you're showing the right kind of help in the right kind of direction to start considering getting you your own domain of influence here.

I think i can fix simple things like BASE POWER for those broken units like the axemen if i know the file where i can adjust those values.

I would not update it to the SVN but i can upload the files for review offcourse.
