I wish I could answer that, but AI is way out of my depth, so I would have to rope the actual AI programmers and designers into this discussion, and I don't think they're ready to give a look under the hood just yet.

Sticking with your current Culture is Transcending. William called picking a new Culture "Transitioning" in the Feature Focus video, but I don't know if that's considered an Official Gameplay Term.

AI is an interesting one as I wonder if the AI will have a set personality for the entire game or one that changes perhaps off the culture they adopt?

As far as I know, the personality of the AI does not change radically (though I don't know if slight adjustments are made based on culture.) But again, this is not my area of expertise, and I probably won't be able to give you clear, definite answers until much later.

We are just saying that this would be an interesting topic for a feature video as well ... ;):mischief::)

AI is important for some here (see the Civ6 forum...) and it can tell us a lot about the intended spirit of the game.

Glad they're in. A few inferences:
  • We're likely getting Umayyads after all.
  • Aztecs will probably be Early Modern.
  • Hence, Zapotecs might indeed be the medieval pre-Colombian civ.
  • Franks can still be the Aesthete civ (though they might not; I was surprised with this design).

Byzantines indeed. Please note: This is actually the second Medieval Culture. We skipped the first one because we still need to put the final touches on the art.
Oh my! Who could it be?

Argh, I may have argued for not predicting everything at once, but step by step. however, my step of one was too short as well. Should have included Aztecs and Byzantines alongside the Arab Prediction... I can only see two scenarios then:

1 Aztecs and Ummayads
2 Arabs/Abbasids and Aztecs as Early Modern

Because we really need both of those cultures in the original 60.

Let's be fair: That well runs very deep (As Boris points out), and you could probably fill several university courses and still only scratch the surface.

Or you could end up as I did with a 180 page Historical Timeline of events, cultural trends, technological discoveries, Influential Philosophies and philosophers, and still have only scratched the surface . . .

If Aztecs do turn out to be Early Modern I expect the Zapotecs to turn up in Medieval.

They might put both Aztecs and Spain in the Early Modern era. Not sure if the Inca will make it to the vanilla game. What other A-B Civs beside the Aztecs or Arabs/Abbasids fit in the first spot for Medieval? How about Anglo-Saxon England?

Okay, so here is my ultimate list of expected civs and their focuses. I won't change it anymore, unless something is denied. Let's see how correctly could I predict.

Medieval
Spoiler :

Arabs - scientist
Aztecs - militarist
Byzantium - aestethe
England - builder
Franks - expansionist
Khmer - agrarian
Mali - merchant
Mongols - militarist
Vikings - militarist
Teutons - expansionist

So here goes my first prediction, that Byz will be aestethe. But I don't complain at all, I prefer this take (I just didn't have this idea for some reason). I am also happy that Byz is in, and that there is a chance we won't get third Subsaharan Merchant civ in a row :p

Can't believe my prediction list has been proven wrong already! XD

If Aztecs do turn out to be Early Modern I expect the Zapotecs to turn up in Medieval.

In one of the feature videos a city goes from Goths to mesoamerican architecture, the thing is, it doesn't really look Zapotec If that was the case I'd expect them to use Monte Alban or Mitla as reference, and it looks much more Aztec. I'd argue that there's a very likely chance the Aztecs are actually Mexica, which is you know, what they called themselves, and It's not such an underground fact given that Mexico's name actually comes from them, for the average Joe, Mexica might be easier to grasp than Umayyad for Arabia for example.

But what else would Mali be? :p

I'd argue there isn't, based on the fact that the term "Byzantine" wasn't used by the inhabitants of its empire either, and that Amplitude want cultures to be as recognisable as possible by the majority of the public. Although, that being said...

I'm pretty sure the skipped-on culture here is the Aztecs, and that Arabia will be represented with the Umayyad Caliphate, which is supported by the fact that this image features the name in its URL.

It's curious Amplitude decided to go with the Umayyad over the Abbasid Caliphate, as the Islamic Golden Age begun during the Abbasid's reign. Perhaps we'll be seeing a military or expansion-focused Arabia instead of a science one?
