Don't know if these are classed as "Outland Captains) if not then I'M SORRY!
Morgasshk!

There's no need to apologize, but I don't think Theoden, Eomer and Aragorn, are "Outland Captains", the Outlands being provinces of Gondor, such as Belfalas and Lossarnach.

Time to revive this, I think I got the most outland captains with 3.

Name 3 elves appearing in LOTR that have lived in Aman (the undying lands) before the War of the Ring

Bonus: Decribe any unnamed elves appearing therin who have lived in Aman befor the war of the ring.

Bonus: (outside LOTR) which of them is the only elf to have twice come to Middle Earth from the Undying Lands, and is deemed the most glorious ever elf warrior (You only get a little hint of this in LOTR where he has a small role. Even in the Similrilion, most of his story is compressed and edited out by Christopher Tolkien. You would have to go back to the pre LOTR "Book of Lost Tales" to get most of his story.)

I was wondering what had happened to this thread... Been off board for a while and hadn't had any messages...

And nope, can't help you with that question at all... Are you talking people they mention in legends or stuff or people (elves) that took part in the book/s?

Morgasshk.

Charactors that appeared in LOTR (the text, not the appendicies)

Come on now, if I can pick this stuff out memory from nealy twenty years ago, you people that have read it recently can do it. If you piss me off, I might just have to get a copy of LOTR back from my children and look up some really tough questions.

Galadriel is first and foremost; Glorfindel is revealed as one who has been to Aman; as for the third, off the top of my head, I'd have to Gildor -- and the Unnamed Elves in his company -- who met Frodo in the Shire.

As for the "Lost Tales" bonus question, I presume that you are referring to Glorfindel ... but since the Glorfindel of the 1st Age died after the Fall of Gondolin, I'd always assumed that these were two different Glorfindels. Am I right in assuming that in the Lost Tales he is "reborn" and returns to Middle Earth???

Correct on all counts Andu Indorian. Originally The LOTR Glorfindal was originaly to have been a descendant of the first age Glorfindal but JRR decided to elevate him in stature to the original, reincarnated (as all elves can eventually be) out of Mandos (in record time) and be sent back to middle earth in the 2nd age as a messenger to strive against Sauron (this is in various notes, not in the Book of Lost Tales), analogous to the Istari, but one of the Eldar, rather than one of the Maiar. The Story of Tour and the Fall of Gondolin in the Silmarillion was piecer together by christopher Tolkien from various JRR note and much compressed versions of the two older sories "Of tour and his arrivail in Gondolin" & "The fall of Gondolin" from the Book of lost Tales, an older version of part of JRRs Middle Earth, with much translation and continuity editing to make it fit with the Middle Earth of LOTR(Gnomes in lost tales=Noldor in later versions). Think of it as ancient oral tradition much corrupted over the years. The rear guard battle by Glorfindal (and his house of warriors) therin covers much more glory with him fighting Dragons and Balrogs before persihing in a coup de deux veuve with the last balrog. You get only a hint of his fame and prowess in LOTR with his chasing off the Nazgul at the ford, and the line by Galdalf, if decades old memory serves me. "Even if you sent Glorfindal, he could not storm the Dark Tower by himself", implying that is is somehow less rediculous to suggest Glorfindal do this than anyone else..
Gildor Inglorion is a Noldo likely connect with the house of Finrod.
We not that Frodo says, IIRC, "These are high elves, they spoke the name of Elbereth". Gildor says "We are exiles" ie. Nodor of the rebellion.

Dain II Ironfoot. He became lord of the Iron Hills, then King Under the Mountain after the death of Thorin. He died at the Battle of Dale defending the body of King Bard of Dale during the WR in 3019.
