Cumulative PM-based History Quiz III

Dragonlord's suggestion is good: it brings some social pressure and the duty to make questions makes winning more honorable.

I might remember 6b soon, he has probably been in a cover of a book I read once, but the sad news is it was about pretty broad era.

Here's a little hint for #4 in 6a:

You have ~24 hours left before you get the names for all persons in question 6a...

A new man enters the podium: Steph, with 27 points

Dachs 34
BananaLee 30
Steph 27
Sydhe 26
Dragonlord 25
Innonimatu 23
Atticus 22
Yeekim 20
Taliesin 17
Dutchfire 10

Edit: Steph adds 6 points to his score!

Irish Caesar joins the show with 11 points. Meanwhile, Yeekim and BananaLee improves their score with 5 and 6 points respectively. BananaLee is the first one to nail 6b, and therefore pushes Dachs down to second place again. This will be interesting. :D

I gave BananaLee a hint though, for 6b:
Think about their nationality... (btw, I don't count #3 as American)
Since question 6 is completed, I won't give you the answers for 6a...

I think I will give you the answers to the quiz in 36 hours.

Edit. Dragonlord nails #4 in 6a: + 1 point!
Edit: So does Dachs! He also got 6b, so now Dachs is back on top. :D
Edit: Yeekim jumps up two places, with 2 points!
Edit: Steph nails the last person on 6a, and also 6b! + 5 points.
Edit: Steph is now in the lead, after completing question 1! +2 points.

I put Dachs above Steph, as Steph was quizmaster "recently" (and not because D is before S in the alphabet. ;)). I'm a bit interested in seeing what Sydhe could do, as he is the only one to get question 7. If he improves his score in other questions, we may see a new leader.

Final deadline in 11 hours. (11pm GMT)

Not last place :D

Thanks to Olav for not making this an esoteric quiz like the others.

Anyway, I would have conceded victory to Dachs. I finished question 1) only because you told me there was an error, and there was only two I wasn't sure of, I just swapped them. It's not like if I knew it!
So I think I should be entitled to 38 points, not 40. Dachs deserve the first place.

The Menace is probably the last one to submit, with 14 points.

Only 3,5 hours till deadline!

Glad you liked it HC. :)

True sportsmanship, Steph. :D And you deserve 40 points. I didn't tell what places were correct, and what weren't, so those two extra points are deserved. Anyway, it looks like you should start prepare the next quiz Dachs!

As the deadline has passed, and I have recieved no new answers, I'm happy to announce that Dachs is the winner! Congratulations. [party] And thanks to all the rest of you for participating. It's nice to see that there is still interest in this quiz after the long break. I hope you enjoyed the quiz. And again, I'm sorry for it being so Eurocentric.

If you see some mistakes in my answers, please tell me. And check your score, I might have counted wrong...

Aaaaargh, Ranavalona I! Nice one, Olav. I fear, though, that I've got enough stuff on my plate right now. :( If Steph's okay with it, I'll abdicate quizmaster in favor of him.

What do you say Steph? Do you want to make a new one, or will you grant BananaLee the honour?

Name the country where the 19th-Century queen that started her reign with 2,000,000 subjects then systematically slaughtered an estimated 1 million of them in her reign (a little over 30 years). 5 points

Ranavalona I, queen of Madagascar.

Surely this woman ranks with Elizabeth Bathory, but on a massive scale as the most demonic femme fatale in history. It is in fact unprecedented for a major ruler to succeed in killing off half of their own population. I think Pol Pot got about a third, but that's closest, and mostly by starvation. We should have a 'Villains' mod in this game, her banner can be a medusa headed gorgon. I almost laughed in a sickened way when I read this in Wiki:

"Many Africans, especially people in Madagascar, do not share that point of view; while they recognize that her regime was autocratic they see her as a ruler who resisted foreign economic and cultural invasion. The death of nearly half the population (largely by torture) during her reign is seen as a unique cultural quirk"

I guess as long as she resisted the threat 'colonialism' posed to her power, she wasn't so bad. By the way, can colonialism be a cultural quirk of the British and French ?

Since she killed the million people over thirty years, there may not have been that many fewer Madagascans at the end of her reign.
