A little early perhaps, but here are the answers:

1) Name the battle in which British foot soldiers advanced on over twice their own number of French Cavalry and defeated them.

Minden

2) "Snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" About whom was this said and what event?

Ambrose Burnside. It was said by Lincoln after Burnside's abysmal failiure to capitalise on the sucess of the mine exploded under the confederate siege lines at Petersburg.

3) Which of napoleon's marshals was the duke of Raguse?

Marmont

4) What was churchill's response to being interrupted by De Gaulle during a dinner only to be told that the French considered him (De Gaulle) to be the new Joan of Arc?

He reminded De Gaulle that the British had been forced to burn the last one at the stake

5) What are the two ways that Alexander was commonly said to have solved the problem of the Gordion knot?

He either slashed the knot with his sword to reveal the two ends of the knot, or removed the pivot

6) Name the commander of the Israeli rescue attempt at Entebbe

"Yoni" Netanyahu

7) At the coronation of Victoria I in Britain, whom did Wellington grab by the shoulder and proclaim "I have you at last!"

Marshal (former by then?) Soult. Soult had lead Wellington on a merry dance in the Pyranees during 1814, defying Wellington's advances into France for some weeks with a much smaller army.

8) Name the Spanish explorer and conquistador who discovered Florida and fought with Pizzarro against the Inca empire.

Hernando De Soto. Some commented that others lay claim to the discovery, but they never served under Pizzarro.

9) Name the bully boy brother of one of the founding fathers said to be responsible for starting the riots that lead to the Boston Massacre

Sam Adams

10) What did Lincoln call “McCellan’s personal bodyguard”?

McCellan was known for being cautious in the extreme and delaying any attacks on the confederate army at any excuse. Lincoln met McCellan after the battle of Antietam to discuss the continuance of the campaign and after spending many hours attempting without luck to persuade him to move came out of the tent and, gesturing to the army of the potomac made the remark about the army itself to someone he knew nearby. Therefore, Lincoln accused McCellan of using the army as nothing more than his bodyguard

I offer my sincerest appologies to all and especially constantine. He answered "massena" to the third question and I counted this wrongly as correct. This means he scored 3 and 1/2.

My round is over, PawPaw's turn is up :)

Time for answers: 48 hours.

Situation atm:

privatehudson: 6,5
pawpaw: 6
loulong: 5,5
north king: 2

Keep on answering, guys!

Hy you all! Few last hours ... take your chance ;)

I'm not sure to be on line this evening and tomorrow...
So, only a pair of hours before the term I gave (I apologize), here are the 'solutions':

1) Who changed side (the one,I think :) ) from C.I.Caesar to Cn.Pompeius, at the start of the civil war in 49 BC?
- Titus Labienus, former Caesar's legatus propraetor (vice-commander) in Gallia.

2) Which treaty gave the land called (after that) 'Normandy' to Normans ?
- Saint-Claire-sur-Epte, 911 AD.

3) Who received German emperor Heinrich IV at Canossa?
- Pope (yes...) Gregorius VII... Hey, guys, I hoped more precision... look at my profile's phrase ;)

4) Who did Richard "Coeurdelion" (Lionhearted) defeat to catch Cyprus, and who received the island by him just after the conquest?
- Richard I defeated Byzantines (a kind of 'secessionist' emperor, not the same of Costantinopolis), and gave the island to Templars. Later, they gave Cyprus to Lusignan, cause they wasn't able to control it.

5) When Emperor Charles V gave Malta to Hospitaliers, which symbolic tribute did he request?
- A falcon every year (Malta was quite famous for its hunting-falcons).
Curiosity: the first year, Hospitaliers send (very gratefully) a GOLDEN falcon to Charles V. Not sure, but IIRC, the ship on which the gift was embarked sunk...

6) Who was the Polish patriot that 'gave' his name to a mountain? (Bonus: where's the mountain?)
- I meaned Tadeusz Kosciuszko, who gave name to Mount Kosciuszko in Australia.
But I accepted (I could have been more precise in asking) Kazimierz Pulaski (who fight in American revolution, too) who gave name to Mount Pulaski, Illinois. He was a Poland patriot, too :)
(N.B.:This point didn't modify the chart positions)

7) Who was the brave Napoleon's general that died at Marengo after giving a decisive help for victory?
- Desaix

8) How were called German volontary troops who helped Finns against Comunists after wwI ?
- Freikorp. (I know, this name was used for other formations, too; it's generic. I'll be more precise next time :mischief: )

9) What was operation "Torch" ?
- Allies invasion of North-West Africa in late 1942, ww2.

10) Who commanded the British battalion who defended bravely the bridge "too far" at Arnhem?
- Col. John Frost, 2°battalion, 1th division. Give a read to "A bridge too far" (or watch the movie: great action, great cast) ! Really worth!

PrivateHudson, you again !!! :D
