North King : 2.5

albeit my wording has been questionned, but probably not for the proper question. For the question about the Eastern Asia, it means a present-day full Eastern Asian country. So if some want you to change their answer, I will definitely accept it.

Answers :

1/ What two Arab countries tried for a while to establish a common Republic (since WWII) ?

Egypt and Syria.

2/ Who was Tulsi Das ?

probably the most famous Indian poet (XVIth- XVIIth). He is especially known for translating the Ramayana into hindi. Tranlsating this "bible" of the Hindus was in a way like the translation of the Bible from latin to German, English... vernacular languages in Europe.

3/ Where did Demetrios Poliorcete end his life (status much more than place) ?

in exile under his father-in-law's control (Seleucids lands).

4/ How many A bombs were used against Japan in WWII ?

2. Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The "trick" was that there was no trick in this question ;-)

5/ The Duke of Burgundy (at the maximal extent of the Duchy) owed allegiance to what countries/soverigns ?

His lands were first French lands so he owed allegiance to the king of France but he expanded mostly on Holy German Empire lands (Luxemburg, Flanders...) so he owed allegiance to the Emperor. He was allied with the English against France for a long time but the English king was not his soverign.

6/ What Empire did vanquish the Russians and the Arabs two years apart (Xth century) ?

Strange. Most people answered te Khazars (not the same timeframe) when the obvious answer would have been the Byzantines who were in the middle (971 against Russians especially and reconquest of Syria and Palestine, albeit it did not last much after the death of John I Tzimiskes.

7/ For what reasons did Egypt nationalize the Suez canal ? Bonus : what did Egypt use the money for ?

Some gave very good answers. More than nationalism, it was due to financial reasons. Dulles had rejected the ask for a loan (because of links with the Eastern (Communist) countries) so the canal was nationalized to get the money to build the Aswan dam.

8/ What was the first important French defeat in Napoleonic Spain ?

Bailén (July 1808) that saw Joseph leaving Spain. 23 000 men were captured.

9/ What was the first East Asian country to be colonized (at least officially) by Europeans ?

Sorry for the poor wording. As a "complete" country it was the Philippines, officially given to Spain as early as 1564, albeit control was still limited. The control of Taiwan started to be complete only during the XVIIth century. India was not complete until the XIXth century, besides it belongs to South Asia.

10/ What Dutch thinker is at the origin of the "people's rights" ?

Grotius. Locke was English, lived later and focused on liberty and ownership.

Steph wins since pawpaw asked the former quizz.
So Steph, your go !
