Ok the quizz has ended, here are the results :

1/ How come England and Scotland became united in 1603 ?

Elizabeth died without heir so her closest parent, James of Scotland became also king of England, therefore uniting the island from the North, thus becoming James the first (in England).

2/ Who was Wallenstein ?

A mercenary general during the 30 years' war. Coming from Bohemia, albeit probably from the German nobility there, he converted to catholicism and provided his army to the Emperor. He proved to be extremly though with the people of the lands on which he fought (war feeds war) and since he tried to organize a centralized government under the rule of the Emperor, the local princes, dukes,... forced to Emperor to got rid of him in 1630 before coming back in 1632 against the protestant Swedish threat.

3/ During the era of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in Britain (Dark Ages), a "wall" was built to protect mostly Mercia from Wales. How was it called ?

Offa's wall, or Offa's dyke.

4/ What is the name of "Louisiane" coming from ?

Simply from the king Louis of France. BTW nice to see a Quebecquois on these boards. They usually know more than us about French history. Name given by the knight de la Salle.

5/ Small Albania broke with the USSR soon after WWII, what other country's communism did it try to follow ?

Not Yugoslavia that was following under Tito its own way but Maoist China. I remember the first tme I went to China some people told me there about their great European partner. It took me a while they were speaking about small, backward Albania lol

6/ Can you name two out of the three "Barabrian" Germanic tribes that controlled at least for a while a part of the Iberian peninsula during the Great Invasions ? Bonus : name the 3.

Strange : I expected Suevi (NW) and Wisigoths but most gave me Wisigoths and the former invaders : the Vandals.

7/ The Greeks had a commercial colony in the Nile delta prior to the Macedonian conquest. What was its name ?

Naucratis. After the conquest of Alexander, Cleomene of Naucratis even became the "regent" in Egypt until Ptolemee came back to make it his own kingdom. As often during Ancient times (up to the Italian merchant colonies (Venice or Genova) they were established as a city with their own rules.

8/ What battle was the last (defeat) stand of Red Indians vs the US army ? Bonus : what weapon enabled the US army to cause an easy massacre ?

Wounded Knee, famous for its ghost dancers and the use of the gatling guns.

9/ What colonia power controlled Ceylan for the longest part of the XVIIth century ? Bonus : from which other power did they took it ?

The Dutch who took it from the Portuguese in 1609. Ceylan is now known as Sri Lanka.

10/ Where was the opium sent to China (cf. the Opium wars) by Britain cultivated ?

India, mostly in the lower Gange valley. It was first produced as an export product to China to get silver that China wanted to get selling tea but did not want to go out by prohibiting imports from the English. Being "illegal" the opium trade allowed to turn the laws.

And the winner is : Serutan ! So that means that is your turn.

Yes, I realized that after seeing the first few responses. Therefore I will rephrase the question:

1. Which was the last state, of those which had been admitted to
the Union by the time of the attack on Fort Sumter, to join in the
American Civil War?

For those of you who have already submitted answers, feel free
to resubmit you answer to this question if the above phrasing
would have changed your answer.

Wow! I'm shocked to get such a good score.
In a few hours I go away on holiday for a week (to see beautiful Rome at long last) and so I won't be able to post a quiz unfortunately.
I'm looking forward to joining back in when I come back though, so I'll get some questions ready in case I do this well again.
Later dudes, er I mean Ciao,
Parmenion.

11 responders. Nice turnout! # in parentheses indicates the number of
people who answered the question correctly.

1. Which was the last state, of those which had been admitted to
the Union by the time of the attack on Fort Sumter, to join in the
American Civil War?

Kentucky.(4 ) It declared itself neutral after Fort Sumter, and
this was honored by both sides until September 1861, when
Confederate forces occupied Columbus, causing Kentucky to
declare for the Union.

The problem with the first phrasing of the question is that
Nevada (admitted 1864) could have been an answer, too.

2. Who were the only Europeans allowed to trade with Japan during
most of the Tokugawa Shogunate ?

Dutch (7 ) They replaced the Portuguese, who had been expelled by
Ieyasu.
.

3. What year was the transportation of criminals to Australia
officially abolished?

1867 (1) Would have taken 1868, as the last ship of transportees
arrived in January of that year.

4. Who was the losing general at the Battle of Zama?

Hannibal(8)

5. Who was the leader of the Royalist resistance in Yugoslavia
during World War II?

General Dragoljub Mihialovic (4)

Hannover(8)

8. Name the opposing sides in the Battle of Kadesh.

Egyptians and Hittites (8)

9. Of whom was Carthage originally a colony?

10. In 1347, a ship from the Crimea arrived in Italy.

aaminion00, I am not sure it is really wise to give, especially officially, the lowest mark to the thread moderator...

(BTW haven't forgotten your map, just been more busy than expected).

Why whatever are you talking about :mischief:

And concerning the map, thanks, no problem . In between crew, school, NESing, and extra math work I haven't really had the time to update RoTO, :o

But I promise to have the resources all completely done by tomorrow, and the backbones of all the tech trees (hopefully someone else can add the arrows) in just another week or so.

Ok, then it's LouLong's turn.

1. Name the Hindi general Alexander the Great fought against in his Indian campaigns.

I was looking for Porus, who fought a famous battle with Alexand near the Indus river... the name escapes me, but it begins with an H though.

2. This weapon was so powerful for it's time that the 2nd Lateran Council banned the use of it against fellow Christians. Name it.

Most of you got this. It was the crossbow.

3. Name the Serbian radical who shot Archiduke Franz Ferdinand in an incident that would go on to spark World War I.

Gavrilo Princip, in my hometown of Sarajevo, 1914. My great-grandmother was supposed to hand the Archiduke flowers but of course she never got to.

4. Name the two most famous cities of the Indus valley civilization.

I was looking for Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro although as some of you pointed out, we have no idea what their real names were.

5. Who was King Taharqa?

Probably the most famous of the Nubian kings.

6. What was the original capital of the Songhai kingdom?

Well I was thinking Gao. I put “original” because I wasn’t completely sure that they didn’t change the capital afterwards. Some of you however gave me the names of some seemingly obscure African villages. A little help from google perhaps :mischief:, or you guys really know your West African history. Either way I just finished a wikipedia article on the Songhai.

7. Who was the chief god/spirit worshipped by the ancient Chinese?

Nobody got the answer I was looking for, which was Shang-Ti. But then again I only learned about this recently. After checking it up a bit more I gave out a half point here and there.

8. Describe the origin of the crescent moon and star as a symbol of Islam?

Finally something I fully understand :D. Well, many people assume incorrectly that the moon originated with Mohammed to symbolize the lunar calendar, which has led some to claim that Islam descended from pagan moon worship. The reality is far different. In the times of ancient Greece/Rome, Artemis, sister of Apollo and godess of the moon and hunt was one of the chief deities of the tiny city of Byzantium. Even with it’s change of name and religion, Byzantium/Constantinople retained this connection to it’s pagan past and the crescent moon and star, representing Artemis, remained one of the chief symbols of Constantinople. Upon conquering it, the Ottomans took it as their own symbol, and after years of fighting the Christian world, the Crescent moon and star became a symbol of Islam. Nowadays you can find it on the flags of many Muslim countries, although most of these are in the former Ottoman domains. Previously, the moon was even used as one of the flags of Richard Cour de Leon.

9. What was the famous Indian revolt against British rule in 1857/8 called?

The Sepoyan rebellion. The British kept trying to impose their culture and the Indians naturally opposed this. The final insult came when the British made their Indian soldiers, the Sepoys... err, not a military expert here... do something or another with the... cartridges I believe, with their tongues, and the cartridges usually had either pig or cow fat on them which was an insult to both Hindus and Muslims.

10. Who was the first Frankish king to convert to Catholicism?

Clovis.

So does LouLong do the quiz next?

@AA

The cartaidges of that time required the soldiers to bite down on them and the Hindus+Musluims for the reasons stated couldnt do that.

Its been suggested that the pork fat covered catridges was a hoax that had been made up by the Russians to incite rebellion and trouble for the British.

I will do the next quizz alright but I have a question for fellow sinophils. Shang Di literally means "up Emperor", which can be considered as Heaven (Tian), or are they really two different things ?
