Current least relevant region of the world?

The mesosphere. Sure it's where most meteors burn up, but it's not like that's anything the stratosphere couldn't do. And it's too high for balloons, but too low for spacecraft, so nothing we launch can stay there for more than a couple minutes on the way up and a couple more on the way down.

Eh? That's not right. The inner core, as far as I know, is responsible for the magnetic field that protects us, and the atmosphere, from cosmic radiation.

Yeah, but we have 0 control over it. We couldn't affect any of that if we wanted to.

That's certainly true.

But it forces me to re-examine what I supposed you think "relevant" means.

The area halfway between New Zealand and the South Pole.

Don't parts of it at least have some mineral wealth or oil?

That puts it squarely ahead of the two I mentioned :p.

The mid-Pacific is in the news for the great Garbage Patches. And for various fishing exclusion zones. Antarctica is in the news for climate change issues. Siberia is not in the news.

Siberia is not in the news.

You just don't hear about it, Arthur Koestler made this clear :o. Considering the massive entrance to purgatory is in Siberia, you may not want to be in fear for the rest our your life.

Everything is relevant from somebody's point of view.

Right now the inner core of the planet isn't being discussed by almost anyone in the media, whether it's in print, on the web, on TV..

It might be relevant to the inner workings of our planet, but it doesn't seem to be that relevant to the day to day goings on of humans like you or I.

I dunno, we get a lot of television actors from Australia & New Zealand. otoh, Indian food is pretty awesome.

It's more the Pacific Islands I was thinking of when naming Oceania.

Apart from regions which are not even populated, nor have trade posts/resource mining facilities etc :)

Those are trivial solutions. I expect average OT posters to be above those.

If you're in Boston, I think the answer is "everywhere outside of 128."

That was already taken.

So they couldn't even come up with a name to partially demonstrate importance? #micropenises

I also submit Warpus' house as the least relevant region of the world. :mischief:

It may not be on many people's radar, that much is true. But without the magnetic field we'd be chips pretty quickly, and the atmosphere would likely be stripped away in the solar wind.

That is crucially "relevant" in my book.

Not that I could do anything to either make it work if it stopped, or make it stop now it's working. But as a factor in my day to day life it is pretty important.

Even though, like nearly all the most important things, it passes unnoticed most of the time.

Cod.

Now you might not like cod, but the UK consumes vast quantities of Icelandic cod.

Why stop there? Why not the exosphere? There's barely anything there and it doesn't do much other than exist. We've only gone there a handful of times and I doubt anyone would miss it if its gone.

Despite the eels, I still consider myself to have won this handily.

Warpus' house is far more relevant, because Warpus lives there.

Various 'regions' delimited by altitude do not impress me, as the nature of regions carries no altitude references. A region may be significant because of surface features, subterranean features, or atmospheric features.

The reference to 'this nondescript patch of water halfway between here and there' I disregard as not qualifying as a region. I didn't have to say "the chunk in the middle of the Atlantic where the weeds are" because I called an actual specified region.

So, what is the prize?

I think you get to live in the region that you've nominated. I can't think of a more fitting prize.

The Sargossa Sea is interesting though. Isn't it an area of flat calm for sailors? Which doesn't mean that the air isn't moving. It's just moving in an upward direction. Or maybe that's wrong. Because how could it be? Air moving vertically upwards would have to suck in air from the surrounding regions horizontally, I think.

I vote Central Asia ...

Not true. :nono: New oil reserves are being uncovered. China is taking steps to resurrect the Silk Road between China and Europe as a new trade corridor. Kazakstan holds the launching point to reach the international space station. If Afghanistan is included, ya got a bit of a war still going on there.
