3000 BC to 2150 BC - Trainee's log
Wasn't sure how much detail was wanted, so I included
everything. Also wasn't sure how many turns I was supposed to play: 10 or 20? If I could connect to the internet from home, I would've asked last night, but seeings as I can't, I played 20 anyway - apologies if I was only supposed to play 10.
3000 BC (0): Wilcox St is getting +5 fpt; it needs 1 to grow, so swap it for a turn to use a BG. And I thought we were going min sci for writing? Lower science to 10% (4/1/5). We now have Writing due in 31 turns (unchanged) at +1 gpt. Wilcox St continues to produce a Settler although I'm not sure where the best place for it is. Next to the second wheat up north. There are probably better long-term sites, but it looks best for some more early settlers.
IT: Wilcox St grows (no changes in lux necessary though).
2950 BC (1): Warrior-scout S, Curragh follows coast SW-S-SW. There's a dark green border but no units to greet us.
IT: We meet the Aztecs. Worker finishes road.
2900 BC (2): Warrior-scout S, Curragh follows coast S-SW-SW. Worker starts mining the BG. We are up the Alphabet on them, but they have Bronze Working, Masonry, The Wheel and Warrior Code. I hold off on trading Alphabet until we meet someone else.
IT: Wilcox St grows (still no lux change needed).
2850 BC (3): Warrior-scout E, Curragh S,S,E.
2800 BC (4): Warrior-scout S, Curragh S,S,E. We now the location of 2 Aztec cities including their capital.
IT: Wilcox St grows to size 5.
2750 BC (5): Luxes up to 60%, BG swapped to G by river since settler's due in 1 anyway. Warrior-scout E, Curragh S,S,SE and spots deep red border. Since Aztecs have The Wheel, I guess it's Japan.
IT: Wilcox St produces Settler, starts a Warrior. An Incan city is settled nearby.
2710 BC (6): Luxes down to 50%. Settler N-NE, heading for the second wheat. Warrior-scout S (spots Dyes), Curragh S-SE-E, deep red is actually Byzantines. We've now met 2 rivals (Incans don't count yet) and as they're adjacent and have probably met, I look for trading opportunities. We're up Pottery on Byzantines, Alphabet on Aztecs; down Bronze Working and Warrior Code to Byzantines, Bronze Working, Masonry, The Wheel, Warrior Code and Ceremonial Burial to Aztecs.
- Trade Alphabet+36g+1gpt to Aztecs for Ceremonial Burial
- Trade Pottery+Ceremonial Burial to Byzantines for Warrior Code+10g.
I couldn't see any way of getting more than two techs out of this and I didn't want to waste our techs that we were temporarily up on - I'm pretty sure the Aztecs and Byzantines would have traded to tech parity.
IT: Aztecs start building the Pyramids. Wilcox St grows to size 4.
2670 BC (7): Curragh S-S-E, Warrior-scout E, Settler E.
IT: Wilcox St produces a Warrior, starts Settler. Byzantines start the Colossus. Worker completes road.
2630 BC (8): Worker moves to next BG along the river. New Warrior moves off to try and meet the Inca SE-E. Curragh S-S-S. Settler N.
IT: Our Warrior-scout meets an Incan scout. Wilcox St grows to size 5.
2590 BC (9): We are up Alphabet and Ceremonial Burial and down Bronze Working and Masonry compared to the Incans.
- Trade Alphabet to Inca for Bronze Working+Masonry+10g.
Overall now we're behind The Wheel to Aztecs and Byzantines and up Ceremonial Burial to the Incans.
Warrior-scout E, Curragh S-S-E. Worker starts to mine - needed to get Wilcox St producing 4-turn settlers once the current one completes. New warrior heads back (W) to Wilcox St - I'd like to have him scout but the lux tax is killing us - luxes up to 60%, work a river grassland instead of BG for the extra gold since we'll complete this Settler in 4 more turns either way. Settler founds
Hoopstadt and starts training a warrior.
2550 BC (10): The Aztecs and Byzantines now both have Iron Working. Incans have The Wheel.
- Trade Ceremonial Burial to Inca for The Wheel.
We're now just behind Iron Working. No horses revealed at all.
Warrior-scout S, Curragh S-E-E. Newish Warrior back into Wilcox St (luxes down to 50%). Hoopstadt changed to work Wheat to get earlier growth.
IT: Wilcox St grows to size 6.
2510 BC (11): New citizen onto a river grassland tile so luxes don't go up (Settler in same time). Warrior-scout S, Curragh E-E-NE.
2470 BC (12): Warrior-scout S (ack, there's a lot of jungle and marsh down here), Curragh E-E-N.
IT: Wilcox St. grows to size 7, produces a Settler and shrinks to size 5. It can comfortably produce 4-turn Settlers from now on. I actually miscalculated the needing of the mine in turn 9 as we have enough shields right now (7+8+8+9) and a road would have been better, work a river grassland instead of BG for the extra gold (shields now will be 6+8(mine completes)+8+8.
2430 BC (13): New Settler off to Game and Furs, SE-SE. Warrior-scout S, Curragh N-N-N now exploring the east side of our continent.
2390 BC (14): The Aztecs now have Horseback Riding. Not likely to be useful to use in the near future with no visible Horses. Besides we can't trade for it yet. Settler S, Warrior-scout S spots a light blue border, Curragh N-E-N.
IT: Worker completes mine. Wilcox St grows to size 6.
2350 BC (15): Luxes to 60%. Aztecs and Byzantines now have Mysticism and the Byzantines obviously traded that for Horseback Riding. Worker starts roading the mined BG. Settler SE, Curragh N-N-NE, Warrior-scout S meets America with whom we have tech parity. So we're even with America and the Incans but 3 techs behind the Aztecs and Byzantines. My guess at the moment is that we've met everybody on our continent - there's still space for another big continent on this map and there doesn't seem to be space for another rival here.
IT: Byzantines start the Oracle.
2310 BC (16): Warrior-scout E, Curragh E-N-N, Settler E. America now has Mysticism, but we can't even buy that, let alone the other techs we'd need for a 2-fer.
IT: Wilcox St grows to size 7, produces a Settler and shrinks to size 5. Next Settler ordered; again working a river grassland rather than a BG (shields 7+8+7+8) Hoopstadt produces a Warrior.
2270 BC (17): Older Settler S, Warrior-scout S (into American territory), Curragh N-N-W gives us a view of the eastern extent of the American lands. Newer Settler off to try and settle on Silks, though if the Incans beat us there I don't know where he'll end up (we don't have any map up there) but I figure it's a priority to try and grab those luxuries. Newly trained warrior moves out to scout that area. He immediately spots a Whale and northern Tundra. Could try for a city with both Silks and the Whale (after cultural growth). Settler has to head north regardless, so N-NE.
IT: Worker completes road.
2230 BC (18): Luxes down to 40%. Warrior-scout SE (wanted to go S but was block by Byzantines), Curragh N-E-N. Older Settler settles
Hunting Lodge. The newer Warrior NE, newer (now only) Settler E. Wilcox St doesn't need any more tiles to be improved to churn out 4-turn Settlers, so the Worker is off to Hoopstadt to improve tiles there, particularly the wheat, NW-NW-N.
We can now afford Mysticism but none of the others and there's no trading opportunity.
IT: Wilcox St grows to size 6 (swap BG to river grassland as before).
2190 BC (19): Curragh N-N-NE, Warrior-scout S sees more Aztec lands, Worker E, Warrior-tundra E, Settler E.
IT: Warrior-tundra spots an Incan Settler by the Silks.
2150 BC (20): Warrior-tundra SE, Warrior-scout S and next to an Aztec city, Curragh N-N-NW. Worker starts a road. Settler is unmoved so far. I hate to waste the time spent moving him up there, but the Incans are odds-on to settle by the silks (possibly where they stand now) leaving us with no comfortable place to settle. Also America and Inca have now both got Mysticism and Iron Working but not Horseback Riding. Horseback Riding is still out of reach, and without enough cash I don't think we can exploit the potential 3-fer.
So Settler still to move. Wilcox St will grow and produce Settler in the IT.
