D-Nut Files - Term 5

Proposed Letter Requesting Safe Passage:

To the Esteemed People of Doughnutia: A Simple but Urgent Request

I am Peter Grimes, Minister of Defense for MIA. It seems we have stumbled into a trap sprung by those mounted barbarians that populate the wastes to your north. Our Warrior is mortally threatened.

I ask of you a friendly favor, but I fear it is much to ask of you: Do we have your permission to move our warrior across the river, and into your cultural borders? We seek only to escape the menace of those grey horsemen. Specifically, our warrior's orders are to move South into your borders this turn, the East, out of your borders, the very next turn.

Please respond as timely as you are able, as our turn-time is slowly ticking.

Respectfully yours,
Peter Grimes, Minister of Defense, MIA

Thoughts? Edits? Revisions?

looks fine to me. Best send it asap, worst they can say is "no"

I think we would prefer to move our warrior south this turn, then east out of their border next turn to keep uncovering fog, but other than that, it looks good.

Good letter  ... how could they reject this temporary haven from a future trade partner, especially considering the hostile environment of the sorrounds.

Unfortunately, they didn't respond in time, so Brave Heron has fortified on the spot, staring down the barbarians.

I hope we see a pigeon bearing news of victory, rather than a pigeon with no note: For surely that will mean the barbarians smashed Heron's encampment, the few pigeons lucky enough to not be eaten flying home tidingsless.

Chatted with Robi about the Barbarian dilemma ... I noticed he was on-line and PMed him to chat.

RobiD77: hi fe
fe3333au: Hi matey you well?
RobiD77: all's good, sorry if i didn't get back to you straight away, i was doing 4 things at once:-)

cIV stuff
fe3333au: no problem ... so cIV MTDG ... should be good
RobiD77: the odd number of teams will make it very interesting
fe3333au: yes it will ... you been assigned yet?
RobiD77: yes i'm with alpha
fe3333au: some MIAers are in that one too
RobiD77: so who knows if we end up being FA's again we might end up having more chats
RobiD77: yes, thats why i picked it, i like the idea of having different players
fe3333au: yes ... but at this stage I don't have cIV running ... so will be learning the ropes ... actually am interested in naming stuff
fe3333au: we got new blood as well ... toyed with random ... but like the level of reporting and discussion in mIA
RobiD77: thats fair enough

Main point of requesting a chat ... Barbarians
fe3333au: now to the big dilemma ... we are endangered by mounted barbs ... have fortified this turn
RobiD77: ok
fe3333au: will you be clearing these scum?
RobiD77: yes, you may have notice our MW's moving into position, plus there is another lot on the other side of the mountains as well, they are certainly popping out of the woodwork
fe3333au: cool ... we were thinking of tactically and with honour and absolutely no loss of face ... withdrawing to safer ground

<Moving into Nut's zone for protection>
fe3333au: we were going to request that we tip toe through Nut lands
RobiD77: they are the only lot on that side of the mountain so you should be safe ... after they are dealt with of course
fe3333au: ok ... so by next turn we can continue to sight see and inform you of barb activity
RobiD77: sure that should be a problem ... hopefully there arn't to many more
fe3333au: I assume NOT a problem ;)
RobiD77: yes not a problem, oops
RobiD77: we already cleared a bunch of barbs before you guys arrived there, but another lot came through

< Good call Chamnix and Peter >
fe3333au: I was saying to rest of team that even if we had moved to safety of Nut land ... you would not see it as an aggressive move ... was I correct?
RobiD77: not if you asked first no
fe3333au: OK ... glad our prez didn't do it ... although Peter Grimes our military minister did sent a letter of request

Nuts will clear the barbs for us
RobiD77: but our MW's are in position now to take out the barbs so hopefully there isn't another bunch behind them
fe3333au: totally understand ... it will be a pleasure to see them in action ...
RobiD77: but i tell you these barbs have been worse the fly on **** these last 10 turns
fe3333au: we too have them ... grrrr

About the Peace
fe3333au: So peace will be a new concept
RobiD77: well for the time being, depends on tnt really ... but we came to an equitable agreement ... eventually :)
fe3333au: they seem to hardly be a threat anymore
RobiD77: well we should be able to keep them in check so we will have the oppertunity to expand a little more

< Fishing > :mischief:
fe3333au: yes ... I assume that they were ... ummm ... persuaded to gift you Currency
RobiD77: umm yes after beating them over the head they were persuaded
fe3333au: LOL ... I bet you broke a couple of good clubs
RobiD77: well 2 failed attacks against us and 2 of their cities burnt to a crisp, before they finched, so more than a couple of clubs were broken ;) ... a bunch got worn out too

< Fishing >
fe3333au: got any cash from them ... to replace the clubs?
RobiD77: no but we got our workers they kidnapped back
fe3333au: That's cool ... they must feel better without the chains
RobiD77: yes they do

< Nut Gazette ... pre edition news >
RobiD77: at least i've got something for the second edition of the doughnutian times now
fe3333au: LOL
RobiD77: gazette actually, lol can't even remember the name of our newspaped

< Playing ... possible addition to the Gazette >
fe3333au: Noticed that a settler was produced in capital ... wonder where he is going ;)
RobiD77: hehe, i can only imagine ... i'll take 200 for rebuilding ruined cities bob ;-)
fe3333au: Was thinking of suggesting a name to them ... for this city to be built on the ashes of carpetrbomb
RobiD77: whats that ?
fe3333au: Do you think they will like ... Provo's Folly ???
RobiD77: lol
RobiD77: probably not, but we would hehe

< Many suggestions for TNT's new city's name >
RobiD77: maybe carpetbombed?
fe3333au: I dare not tell them ... mind you what can they do about it ... throw a rock ??
fe3333au: LOL
RobiD77: hehe
fe3333au: Burnt Carpet
RobiD77: they have lots of them now so you better be careful ;-)
fe3333au: LOL
RobiD77: carpet stain perhaps
fe3333au: ROTFL
fe3333au: Have I inspired the article a little ?
RobiD77: hehe, yes

< Robi is editor in chief >
fe3333au: So you edit your gazette?
RobiD77: edit, publish the lot, i had actually thought of doing something like that a while ago but was a bit lazy, so general w beat me to it, but that gave me a bit of a kick in the pants to do one myself
RobiD77: can't let you guys have all the fun :)
fe3333au: supprised KISS hasn't done one
RobiD77: too disorganised ;-)
fe3333au: yep
RobiD77: bloodly anarchists

Team Structure
fe3333au: so you virtually do everything at Nuts?
RobiD77: atm, yes
fe3333au: bit frustrating?
RobiD77: for some reason they all trust me ... maybe i've done too good a job
fe3333au: maybe you have ;-)
RobiD77: umm at times it can be, but its not too bad, there hasn't been a whole lot to do except for the clubbing mentioned previously, but i will be taking a bit more of a back seat in the near future, especially with cIV MTDG getting underway soon
fe3333au: I will be concentrating on this game ...
RobiD77: i seem to have inspired some more people posting since the tnt thing
fe3333au: good
RobiD77: well who would have though a complete newbie would be running the team after 60 odd turns of play
fe3333au: you pbem before?
RobiD77: nope, first one, figured it would be a good way to see how it all works
fe3333au: well done
RobiD77: thanks
RobiD77: but all in all it has been fun leading the team
fe3333au: so your team has only one leader? ... no ministers
RobiD77: well in theory we have 3 leaders, but i've kinda taken the lead in the last 15 turns or so become a generalisimo of sorts
fe3333au: what were the positions ... I only ask in interest to see how other teams operate
fe3333au: we have Prez(Turn Taker), Defence, Domestic and Foreign
RobiD77: well turnplay/ internal minister and foreign minister are the leaders
fe3333au: Foreign at one stage had 3 diplomats ... but got rid of that cos it was hard for all to have big picture
RobiD77: they can hire any assistance if needed, but they are the 3 key positions ... the un rep basically just keeps the team in the loop of any game occurances with other teams
fe3333au: actually we also have team captain who is UN Rep
RobiD77: although that job hasn't been to busy since provo was gagged
fe3333au: LOL
RobiD77: while he was posting it was the busiest position
fe3333au: yes it was
RobiD77: but all in all our sturcture is fairly basic, just helps make sure all the relavant discussions/questions/ideas got to the right thread, then the turnplay/IA/FA act on things

Back to our Wandering Warrior Abroad
fe3333au: back to the warrior ... If we come across lightly guarded barb nests in our travels ... do you want us to leave them for you to clear or have a go ourselves?
RobiD77: feel free to have a go yourself if you think you can take them, we wont be complaining the sooner we can get rid of them the better
fe3333au: we will certainly keep you informed of anything we find ...
RobiD77: ok, no probs ... hopefully if there are any more they will head north hehe
fe3333au: yes

About the upcomming trade
fe3333au: so trading in a couple of turns ... sweet
RobiD77: yep, not long now, just putting the final touches on the harbour ... you know like cleaning out the refueling system ;-)
fe3333au: yes indeed < I actually didn't know what he ment ... More Navy ??! >

His turn
fe3333au: so far I have asked all questions ... you have any for me?
RobiD77: umm, i asked you a whole bunch last time, anything new with KISS
fe3333au: still tense
RobiD77: any troop movements sighted
fe3333au: not really ... couple of individuals and a couple of lookouts on mountains
RobiD77: so war is virtually guaranteed then
fe3333au: war ... I hope not ... but I think it is :(
RobiD77: the timing is interesting if it does happen
fe3333au: yes ... our benefit is that we get first go ... if we want
RobiD77: yes that is true
RobiD77: pity i can't switch teams, i could help you out on how to fight a defensive war ... got a lot of practise

My Turn again
fe3333au: back to postable stuff ... any contact with KISS?
RobiD77: nothing substantial, just a chat with whomp about possible trades ... but no formal agreements
fe3333au: makes sense on their part ...
RobiD77: most of our talk have been with tnt recently

< Fishing >
fe3333au: Do KISS sound confident or we were not mentioned?
RobiD77: well they are confident but at the same time careful
fe3333au: I see
RobiD77: they don't see you as a pushover but they believe they can come out on top in the long run if that makes sense

< Better Bait > :mischief:
fe3333au: we may be interested in paying for good intel < hint hint > ;)
RobiD77: hehe, sure if we get anything good ... but if they are planning something big their not sharing
fe3333au: wise ... but you never know

< Jingle Jingle Clink Clink >
fe3333au: I'm getting a purse to spend on Foreign stuff soon
RobiD77: hehe, sound cool
fe3333au: LOL I call it the Black Purse ... But it will probaly go on defence :(

Go Robi Go ... Spill them Beans
RobiD77: well all i can tell you is they very interested in monarchy, and as far as war goes they haven't said to us that they are planning to attack you outright, however they have alluded to the looming war
fe3333au: LOL you gotta do better than that if you want some black gold ;)
RobiD77: thats all i know

< Yes .. More Beans .. More Beans >
RobiD77: oh and their navy is very small and obsolete
fe3333au: know that too ... they got a curragh sailing around our waters too
RobiD77: but they are worried about your galleys and are planning to upgrade and expand that part of the military

< Thanks Matey >

Change to TNT boating
fe3333au: Don't think TNT ever got around to building a boat LOL ... they must be looking at a very black map
RobiD77: no we actual saw one!
RobiD77: just one
fe3333au: actually maybe you are right ... was a long time ago ... maybe sunk by barbs
RobiD77: hehe
RobiD77: still there map is probably very black

Government Talk
fe3333au: So you going for Republic now? ... or too costly with all your units?
RobiD77: no, still planning on monarchy ... many units, not so many cities ... but if we can get a solid peace then we can build more cities without needing to build to many more units

< About Cities >
fe3333au: I like your city names
RobiD77: thanks
RobiD77: some got them off a dunkin doughnuts website of all the different doughnuts
fe3333au: he he he
RobiD77: so we have a list to follow hehe
RobiD77: i think strawberry is next
fe3333au: you already done that one ... that was the new one

< Ease off Fe !!! ... Back Pedal >

fe3333au: I think
RobiD77: hmmm, thats right, oops, its getting late and the brain is starting to shut down ;-)
RobiD77: ummm, then off the top of my head i think krispy kreme is next
fe3333au: Nice ... I think time for zzzzzzzzzzzz

Our Cities
RobiD77: oh while we are on city names i always forget to ask, what does EMP city stand for? ... i saw it on the top 5 list a few times
fe3333au: Emperor Napolean was a player ... we all named cities
RobiD77: ahhh ... i see ... i though it might have been an acronim

<Getting Late>
fe3333au: well before I sign off ... if you ever send an 'observer' he will be most welcome
RobiD77: so did you name one yet?
fe3333au: yep
RobiD77: tell you what i'll have a look see if i can guess it, have a good night
fe3333au: no prob ... cya
RobiD77: cya, take care

So Navy is a concern to KISS

Great Chat, Fe! I'm not keen on giving away our precious gold at this point, but I think that Robi has earned 5-8 gold for some of that intel. If we see that we have a little extra at some point, it wouldn't hurt to pass it on.

Good to know about KISS's navy. This makes me think we should try and take out their curragh. But that's a discussion for the Defense thread.

I'm a little worried about them going for Monarchy. If they do Monarchy, they will have strong incentives to continue building up their forces. If they have really strong forces, they may come landing on our shores. That would be undesirable. At the same time, if they go into a Republic, they will become stronger than TNT economically. Man, TNT has really played poorly. That's making it difficult to contain DNUT.

I'm not getting any sense of uncooperativeness from Robi. He seems very open and at ease. This could be a well-constructed facade, or it could be sincere. I'm leaning towards sincerity at this point.

The third option Peter, is the skill of the Foreign Department's tongue

No Gold Yet :shakehead ... We'd certainly need stronger intel before we start sending pigeons carrying gold purses over the water ... It just came to me while we were chatting, I'd probably give a small amount for troop movement and proposed target information ... Nothing else ! ... it would certainly be discussed with the team anyway.

But it was a fun chat

One Up on KISS

We have an option to trade Doughnuts Republic for Monarchy (which they are studying) ... now that unfortunately is all we can trade unless we break a deal, which I for one am loathe to agree to (but majority rules :mischief:)

Anyway assuming this premise ... How can we delay KISS getting Monarchy, a government suited to an extended war ?? ... mind you there is something in the rules about not abusing the state of war to increase war weariness for the sake of it :hmmm:

Anyway ... What if we offer Republic and a MA Technology (something that KISS cannot) for Monarchy ourselves and the understanding that they cannot trade it on to others.

And ... How far are we willing to go if it becomes a bidding war???

This assumes that KISS is not already researching Monarchy themselves, although they have just researched Construction :)

I will send a friendly note for a chat ...

Dear Robi, etc. brave doughnuts, etc.

We cordially ofer an open invitation to sit and chat of matters concerning stronger ties and sweet benefits for both our two Cultures.

ie. Chat me anytime you see me :)

Feauris blah blah etc MIA

OK ... Analysis of Operation KISS kiss off :D

The Prize ... Monarchy (24) = 720
Actual value ... 617 if Nuts only team Crown savy ... or 514 if all of Battle Island know about :king:

KISS offer ... straight away
>
Construction (20) = 600 ... Actual is 343
>
Republic (28) = 840 ... Actual is 480
>
Trade Value = 823 ... 206 in the Nuts' Favour (assume Nuts the only team with Monarchy)

MIA Counter Offer :mischief:
>
Republic (28) = 840 ... Actual is 480
>
Chivalry (32) = 960 ... Actual 823
>
Trade Value = 1303 ... 686 in the Nuts' Favour (assume Nuts the only team with Monarchy)

Whata ya thinka ... Is it worth it ?? ... How far do we go to make things a little difficult for KISS ?!!!

I don't understand C_H

Yes ... I am proposing that we goto Nuts and try to get a deal for Monarchy ... not so much that we want it ... but more to delay KISS getting it ... as soon as they switch to Monarchy, KISS are totally war ready

I guess with Monarchy we could also have one more option to debate aboutif we wanted to switch governments due to an extended war scenario.

EDIT ... I see I wrote TNT as reference as to beaker value the deal favours ... changed to read easier

One thing to consider: We can't give DNUT Chivalry until they have Construction and enter the Middle Ages.

Let's not forget what we agreed to with TNT. I know that Chivalry is fair game to trade, but in an earlier post you mentioned the option of breaking our trade agreement with TNT. I don't think that keeping KISS from Monarchy for 15 turns or so is worth latrining our relationship with the weakest team on the planet.

Nice idea, but I don't think it will work - we can't give Chivalry until Nuts have Construction, Feudalism, and Monotheism. And unless we get them to agree not to trade with KISS, they will still trade Monarchy for Construction straight up.

Really Dnuts choice is Monarchy for Republic and Construction from KISS (Construction is the single most important tech to Dnuts right now), or Monarchy and a promise not to trade with KISS (which is not good for Dnuts at all) for Republic now (useless to Dnuts) and Chivalry in maybe 50 turns - I don't think that is a very difficult choice for them to make.

I was just putting it out there ... and with no interest quickly dismissed it as an option ... this is new idea.

With TNT down 2 cities one of them being 5 population, they are very much crippled for the time being ... so strengthening ties with a powerful neighbour surely is a good idea ... you are correct Chivalry is not restricted ... we can probably get it and then get another researched by the time TNT complete Engineering ... or wait for them to get it while we concentrate on gold.

That it is a temporary inconvenience to KISS is obvious, I am trying to create barriers for KISS alligning with the powerfull and too close for comfort ... Doughnutters.

You must also remember that KISS can see EVERY trade (and other diplomatic relationship) by the very fact that they have established embassies with EVERYONE.

@ Chamnix ... X-post

I'm just trying to judge importance, if any of delaying KISS getting Monarchy.

We could add another MA Technology ... and ...

We can but Try ... Starnger Things Have Happened :mischief:

I agree that trying to delay KISS getting Monarchy, but I can't see a way that we can do it.

Our hands are tied in trading Construction, and KISS can research Monarchy themselves in roughly 15 turns if they want to. But I honestly don't see why KISS would change to Monarchy at this point. I can't see them having so many units that the upkeep is an issue until most of the way through thier Golden Age, which will be about the same time from now as their completion of the research.

I'm uncomfortable giving too much to Dnuts in any case. I know KISS is our immediate threat, but I think Dnuts are the greater long-term threat. To be blunt, I think if KISS and MIA fight for any length of time, then Dnuts win the game. I know we have to prepare for KISS and most likely fight them, but I don't want to just win the war and still lose the game. We need to keep the bigger picture in view.

Monarchy is only useful to KISS if our war drags on for so long that war weariness becomes an issue. If that happens, then I think we've lost the game anyway so there is not much point in expending a lot of effort preventing KISS getting Monarchy.

Our hands are a bit tied here – but things could be much, much, much worse.

Here's how I see the situation right now…
Great News:
Dnuts are (apparently) not planning on allying with KISS to take us out

Good News:
Dnuts have ended the war with TNT, meaning that our trading partner is still alive, and Dnuts won't be controlling an entire continent here real soon

Bad News:
Dnuts will be trading with KISS for Ancient Age techs, getting them both into the Middle Age. (I see this as a fact... nothing we can do about it)

So how do we make the most of this situation?
* Keep the dialogue going with the Nutters and do everything possible to prevent a Nuts-KISS military alliance.

* Maneuver to become the preferred trading partner of the Nuts. (Made easier by the new peace treaty with TNT)

* Try to ace KISS out of any Middle Ages tech deals with TNT or Dnuts. If this requires gifting tech (or selling it ridiculously cheap… so be it)

Essentially, we go back to our game plan from the beginning – except we're fighting a mostly defensive war with KISS. We become the Trade kings, work for peace and stability in the world, and triangulate our way into the top spot. The more our tech lead over KISS grows, the easier time we'll have keeping them at bay. Maybe they'll even see the light and call off this stupid war. Maybe we'll even give them a token MA tech for the peace deal?

With Nuts and TNT no longer fighting, the specter of someone getting a Domination victory is much less likely… and the Greeks tech and money their way to victory!

How's that sound for a plan?
