Deity Challenge #10 - Maya on pangaea

well, im glad somebody bothers to look at the xml cuz i dont. its like peaking behind the curtain. the civilo listing is really terrible if that's how aqueducts actually work. i guess i dont have to move citizens around then (for that particular benefit, i mean)?

If anyone (Tommy?) is in doubt about what The Pilgrim says, attached are some before growth/after growth with and without aqueducts screenies that I produced a few months ago (when I was trying to figure this out).

The Before Growth - No Aqueduct screenie shows 64/66 progress and 4 food surplus, so you would expect 2 food to carry over. The After Growth - No Aqueduct screenie shows next turn, with 2/77 progress, as predicted.

The Before Growth - With Aqueduct screenie shows 97.45/101 progress (3.55 food to next pop), with 20 food surplus, so you would expect 16.45 food to carry over (20-3.55) and be added to the 40.4 (40% of 101) that the aqueduct should provide, for a total carryover of 56.85.

But the After Growth - With Aqueduct screenie shows only 56.45 carried over. What accounts for the 0.40 difference between the predicted 56.85 and the actual 56.45? I think the aqueduct yield is rounded down to the nearest whole number (here, 40), rather than carried out to the decimal.

As an aside, for those who may be curious (or may want to play around with these parameters), you can find all this in the XML.

GlobalDefines.xml contains the key elements of the food/population growth formula:

<Row Name="BASE_CITY_GROWTH_THRESHOLD">
<Value>15</Value>
<Row Name="CITY_GROWTH_MULTIPLIER">
<Value>8</Value>
<Row Name="CITY_GROWTH_EXPONENT">
<Value>1.5</Value>

The full formula is: for pop N+1, required food = 15 + 8*(N-1) + (N-1)^1.5

Civ5Buildings.xml contains the aqueduct 40%, in the line: <FoodKept>40</FoodKept>.

so aqueducts are a 40% reduction of total food needed for the next citizen. since it remains a constant, finagling with the totals are useless. i'll have to rethink which numbers im crunching. thanks for detailing this, Pilgrim and Browd.

Well, the aqueduct saves a bit less than 40% of the food required for the next citizen. An aqueduct carries over 40% of the food used to create the most recently created citizen.

So, in the aqueduct screenies above, the 10th citizen cost 101 food, and the 11th citizen will cost 114 food. The aqueduct will carry over 40% of 101 (40 food, rounded down), which represents 35.1% of the 114 food required for the 11th citizen. The 16.45 of carried over excess food amounted to another 14.4%, so the city in that screenie started off with just under 50% of the food required for the next citizen.

I'm in the same boat with you. Are you surprised?

Nope, not really besides the extra pair of oars speeds up the exploration significantly and if we can recruit 6 more & a lightweight puppet master as a cox we can start competing against The Universities. Perhaps El Cid has some big fellows in his ranks and I'm expecting an application from Hammer for the cox job any minute now.

And we have slightly drifted away from the topic, again.

If he settles it (Ankara) where he does for me, it's a garbage city on a hill so it's just plain annoying.

I finally opened that save after finishing DC12, and I must stand by my comment. Yes the city is garbage, but it's a free, comes with a worker or two and some target practice for the atlaists. It's one of the dumbest moves to make as Sully, but I like when they forward settle on me, I would almost pay them for it if there was an option ;)

I played till turn 120 or so, and will post a t100 screen shortly and some more info.

I have went after him while building NC, and slowly eliminated his defence force 3 warris, 2 CA, and an archer with my atlaists. Then took the city with a 3hp (after bombard) spear.
Settled on marble, i wanted the observatory but could not get happy enough to avoid settling the lux. He came with a lively bunch of CAs, comps, and spears but i kept picking his melee and he lost them all and finally gave me peace for all his lux.

Which was about time as Boudica was getting restless after taking two Arab cities and asked if i cared to deal with ghandi. I was quite annoyed with him for settling another garbage vity on the coast north of my cap, i had my sights on that nice gold hill with two horses in range and he put it two tiles north, almost in tundra, sandwitched between 2 CS, talk about garbage location. So i figured it will be easy, said yes in ten to the offer and worked on Sully. I DOWed as promised, then finished mopping Sully and went after Vijayanagara with atlaists. To make a llong story short, three Long Count GPs later i was still there with XBows, SMs and pikes and still getting nowhere.

Mostly because Harun and Will figured that if i was fighting only two fronts it would not be fair and I can start getting delusions of Domination grandeur and added Western and Estern fronts. FOrtunately western was in the same spot as my war with Sully so i wa ready and in the east my ally stopped Will cold in the jungles.

But they had lots of CS allies between them and Valetta really made my life hard. until i got peace with them i could only get two CBs in range and one meatshield to take damage, so i was not making progress. He changed his alleginace 3 or 4 times and now finally is in Arab sphere and both Harun and Will gave me peace. Not knowing how much longer this situation will last and not wanting to still be there when arty comes, I pushed in with all i got, lost 5-6 units (more then in entire DC12) and took that damned city on t 116. I will press on until i get Delhi i think, just need new meatshields before i go there.

As you can see my BPT also does not stack well against Peter but i can live with that.

Harun despite losing half his cities is in the lead and wonderspammming with the best of them, sometimes two per turn. And making me want to go there and pay him a visit. But since his CAs are now in their prime i hope someone else deals with him.

Religion wise I went with idols, tithe, asceticism, production 15% and IP. I remember seeing IP vs RT thread and must say this game makes me forget about ever using RT again at higher levels. My religion is spreading like wildfire with only 1 missionary, but I enhanced with MLC GP. And that's on deity vs some powerful religion spammers like Celts and Spain. No desert folklore either, I think I might be able to convert the whole world here. Since I have no religious buildings to buy, and don't want more prophets, I will buy 200 faith inquisitors and stockpile until I get the holy cities. Besides Celts I don't see anyone else getting their religion to spread my against my pressure.

well he was a land-locked ai with a water-based UA. i dont know if they have it coded into his actions but it makes sense to find a nearby habitable coast. but if it was coded they should have put some kind of distance limit to make it more rational. really, his starting spot makes the least sense with a UA like that. in my few attempts he never really tried to fill the gap between the two cities.

I thought that might have been a reason for his actions. Do AI know beforehand where future resources are? there might be oil there later and he is going for it now?

Once he settled that one he put one north of his cap in my direction and i think if i didnt fill the space in he would evetually. Of course soon we were at war and like in your case, he would not offer a decent peace deal for a long time.

OK I will try to put that t 100 SS here, hope it works,

Well, in my game he had a coastal city as well (3rd oor 4th) and if he had wanted the 2nd city on the coast he'd had with ease but since G&K one AI seems to occasionally follow script 'settle the 2nd city far away & across the land 4 or 5 tiles away from human capital never mind anything else'. Extremely rarely this happens to AI vs AI as well.

Do AI know beforehand where future resources are? there might be oil there later and he is going for it now?

It's does know but even that doesn't usually explain the odd placing of the 2nd city - AI prefers ICS spacing regardless of the resorces. In this case there was oil in the sea but nothing else and there was oil much closer to his capital.
If, which I very much doubt, the AI knew that 2nd city was his best chance to have a navy in that landlocked sea as well the 2nd city makes some sense. Usually there isn't even this much alternative motive for settling next to human capital.

I very happy I looked at this thread till the end. It has made my turns faster already ;) I used to micro the food surplus working under a wrong assumption that it is lost during growth. Now I just leave the cities be and worry about other things.

I am looking good on this map so far, thinking of a sub 200 Dom. Not as impressive as a t211 no range win ( I still can't wrap my head around that) but it will be on first play through without reloads and with minimal AI abuse. I take their gold before I DOW but o it for real, taking their caps as well :)

Still four caps to go at t169. Sully, Izzy, Siam and Will who I have almost caught up to in tech just now. Got arty five turns ago and I am hoping it will last till I get to Will. If not I am not far from flight but I don't have cash to rush buy ghost bombers yet.

Maxym, somewhere in your edit to insert the image something was lost. You have a floating bracket and a null link to an image. (i checked the link by quoting you and seeing what it said in the spoiler.) you might want to try uploading/adding the image again.

I barely got this one in under 200. Fighting Izzy and Will and then Will, Rammy and Sully at once to get it done. Sullys cap t 197 (for 2nd time) and the other two on last turn, but I could have had Wills a turn earlier if I wanted. Siam was the limiting factor. I could have done that faster.

I had to wait to open electronics and upgrade frigates to BS. That was my plan all along, I just thought I will get there faster. I liberated Atwerp, but should have annexed, as I could not get fighters into a Dutch city north of Amsterdam, that I took bc of range limitation. I had to rush buy one and get range promo to get it in. He beat me to flight, by a turn, but I had oil first.

Izzy put up a good fight with her GW, but again, I could prolly get her finished faster too.

The biggest difference between this and my other DC games was my confidence I think. I don't think I played any better, just that I knew I can do it, and I set out for a Dom win from the start. So played aggressive like a GotM and had a clear plan on how I wanted to do it.I also learned the importance of never taking my foot of the AI throat, and as soon ad one was done, finding another one to stomp. I broke three RAs myself with 5 turns to go on all of them as I was ready to attack and did not want to lose time. Will broke another one, so I don't think I even got one to mature. Fun game, thanks a bunch.

gj Maxym

I just finished this in t188 - SCIENCE WIN

thats the fastest science win for me - and dont think i can do any faster

have had pretty good timing with production and teching - getting the last tech just the turn my cap finished part 1 to go produce the last part

I ll do little go through with screenshoots in a seperate thread as I really think this game was my masterpiece of civ5 singleplayer

Thanks Tommy and Pilgrim.

GJ tommy, that is a sick SV time :)

Pics Coming up after Easter brunch, it took me deep into the night to finish it and did not have time.

Attacking Edinborough:

I have decided to just go in a counterclockwise direction starting with Delhi to minimize back tracking, and only wanted to get Amsterdam before Istanbul. But got delayed fighting Izzy and just started working on it with new army.

Pushing on to Amsterdam

For Siam the plan always was to get 4 galleases (rush bought) upgrade t frigates then BS and just swipe it from the sea. I kinda rushed arty, for the first time ever, i usualy find it obsolete too fast, but now i know that its because i didnt rush it properly. I think that even earlier arty is very workable and will win the game. Also i finally gave up building more things in cities and just cranked out units. I was producing enough, that even having Will's ghost bombers and triplanes harvesting my troops was not slowing me down, i always had replacements coming in. Having strong religion definitely helped here.

Victory Screen:

No the highest score for me at nrealy 6000 HOF, in fact DC12 was 6300, but now i finally got deity wins as highest scores. I think i can do it now ;) I didnt get to a stellar start, low BPT, stuck fighing India for crap city for ages. I think what turned it around was tithe and paying everyone to fight, NON STOP, as soon as someone made peace, i found them new dancing partners and paid whatever it took. Getting AI gold before taking their cap did not hurt either.

I have checked and reposted the inital screen from t 100, it shows up here for me NP, but doesnt on my ipad either. Not sure what else i can do. Let me know if anyone can see it. I put it in a post below the original, and i can see the thumbnail there now....
