"Events do neither, they merely make the game more erratic"

i can see this as an interperatation -however- it also lowers "opportunism" and i am not sure how "The Bowery" event for example -which comes early- can help someone who is losing moreso then one who is winning.

the evidence is clear- remember an article stating civ4 players were control freaks- i suggest - no- some are- the ones that fear the "erratic" (which rythms with "Civfanatic" )

liken this phenom to the phrase- "they come from a "good" family"- ie - "they have money"
"They are a "good player"- ie- "they are control freaks"

not aimed at anyone- worse things to be-

Some events have more effect than others. The chances for opportunism are nevertheless more erratic.

Who made claims otherwise? After all, many of us aspire to CONTROL our empire, and possibly CONTROL more and more of OTHER empires until we CONTROL everything ;).

I love the feeling that random good luck or bad luck dpes not affect my control over my empire ;)

Thanks again for all the input. I am starting to feel more comfortable with my starting game now. Knowing that it is not unusual to secure only 1-2 additional city sites before you must war has been a big help.

I made it a priority to play through some games with the Oracle->MC gambit and am now reasonably comfortable with it (even with leaders who have no means of speeding up the gambit). In low commerce starts with philosophical leaders, I find it particularly effective. It gives a tech slingshot that can carry you deep into the tech tree. It gives you a technology that you can successfully bribe AIs with. It also gives you an opportunity for the Mids with a Great Engineer in some situations, for the super SE. Otherwise, you can pick up the Great Prophet for the commerce support that is welcome/necessary in an SE.

So adding that to my skillset along with traditional REXing or early rushes has given me extra versatility and ability to better capitalize on what advantages are present in a particular game.
