Democratic Succesion Game

That is indeed a sweet deal, plus we could (if we wanted to) build Horse Archers then.

I should be able to play the turn when I get home.

I took a look at the save and heres my opinion:

Calcutta
We should work the furs tile (1N of city) instead of the forest. This would only increase our growth with 1 turn and it will decrease the amount of turns needed for technology with 1. It will also give us +2 gpt.
Why is the worker building a road on the hill south of Calcutta? As far as I can see, building a road there will not improve our infrastructure.

Cherokee (Barb)
One of the two archers is unpromoted, the city doesn't has cultural defence. I think that we can take the city with one extra cat or axe, we would sacrifice some units this way though, and I don't know if we can afford any military casualties atm.

Btw, why do we build so many cities? This will only increase our maintenaince costs (and these are already high).

I agree with kwarriorpoet that not all cities should build markets. The city west of Delhi (forgot the name) does not work any commerce tiles, a market would be irrelevant atm. We need it to build some military.

Everything else was played very well  I'm looking forward to the next round!

OMG, what a busy turn session...notes got tedious, forgive the bad jokes, but it's been a long day :)

Notes
Spoiler :
111 - Pata to Barracks
- Vjay to Axeman
- Bombay to Granary
- Delhi, set governor to stop growth, focus on research
- Calcutta now set to work fur on plains river instead of forest grassland, now get construction in 6 turns
112 - Founded Lahore on desert near horse, set to lighthouse
- Founded Madrass near clams set to lighthouse
- Worker near Agra set to quary the stone
- Exploring Galley near Chinese lands found Beijing...has Stonehenge!
IBT - Met Huayna Capac
113 - Traded Polytheism to Wang Kong for Archery and 25 gold
IBT - DeGaul offered Monarchy for Alphabet and 50 gold...I took the deal :) (I had checked by chance last turn when we met Huayna Capac.
Huayna had Monarchy and Monotheism for trade, but wanted Math and Alphabet just for Monotheism, lol.
In comparison, I feel that this was a much better deal.)
IBT - Varanasi converted to Taoism...I passed on converting for now...no one else follows Taoism.
114 - We revolt to Hereditary rule!
- Vijay built an Axeman promoted to CR 1, changed cue to build two spearmen to aid in northern defenses.
- Changed Delhi to allow growth, but kept focus on research
115 - Bombay finished Granary and started an Axeman
IBT Huayna had the Gall to demand Currency!!! I told him to stuff a Tamale in that fat Mouth and sit down before he hurt himself...it didn't go over well I'm afraid, lol!
116 - Islam spread to another of our cities...still hold off on converting?
117 - Bombay finished Axeman, changed cue to Catapult
- Vjay finished Spearman (sent to city far in the North) started worker (need to grab horses soon)
- Pata finished Barracks, started Catapult
- Finished researching Construction, started Horseback Riding baby! Can you smell the War Elephants?
118 - Found Timbuktu
119 - Nothing
120 - Great Merchant born in Delhi!!! I left him there for the next player :) Looks like we can get him to teach us Metal Casting muahahaha

Status of the Empire:
1) The French may be more of an immediate threat than Mansa Musa, but we could counter with stronger defenses in Varanasi (Has an Axeman, Spearman on the Way, Barracks in 4 turns)
2) Horseback Riding in one turn :)
3) Economy horrible :( Tech rate can be reduced to get us back to positive income, Market coming in Delhi in 3 turns.
4) Delhi has reached max pop. Should go back to no growth focus on money and beakers?
5) Need defense ASAP in the two new coastal cities, in the cities north of Bombay and Calcutta and Agra.
6) Horse pasture being built
7) Two Catapults under construction
8) Demogame3 is numero uno :)
9) A worker is coming online at Vjay in one turn

I recommend Taking out the Barbarian city using the catapults, but preparing for war with Degaul and Mansa Musa soon. Qin already has Horseback riding...Mansa is still backwards in tech :)

Screanies and game save at the bottom :)

War is coming! (Omens and signs point to it, now how do we best prepair?)

I suggest we use the great merchant not for discovering a technology, but let him do the mission which gives us like 1000 gold. That way we can further build up our military without losing research.

... why the barracks in Agra?

Nice round  I really enjoy this game :)

I think CoL needs to be the next tech, build some courthouses.

I set Agra up for Barracks to help it build its own defensive units. It's very close to Mansa, and with the Barracks, it can build Archers with city guarrison, and Axemen and/or Spearmen with CS 1. It's a marginal build, but our mainland cities will be busy, almost too busy to build troops to transport to Agra for a while. The French in the North are building up their forces. Mansa looks like an easy target, and Qin...well, he's always mischievous and clever...No doubt he's building up an army also, but keeping it away from his borders near us.

After Horseback Riding, I would like to see us push for CoL, on the way to Civil Service and Machinery, then Engineering, then Guilds. Use War Elephants to take out Mansa and get the Islamic Holy city, convert to Islam, then try to either take Qin out or convert him to Islam also. France will be a problem that we wont be able to deal with for a while, but we'll need a good defence up there for sure.

Personally, I've had poor luck getting Vassals, unless it's through war (i.e. beating them down so bad they submit to your rule.) However, Qin could be a valuable Vassal in the future.

Your thoughts?

Roster:
dutchfire
Joe Harker - enjoying Liverpool's lucky win
kwarriorpoet - played
DaveShack - Up!
Methos - On deck

I'll have a look at the save, but from the screenshots, it looks good.

I think CoL - Civil Service looks good as a tech path.

About Islam, I wouldn't convert to it, it'll lead to diplomatic trouble, since the only one who's muslim is mansa musa, who won't like us anyway. :p

Is that a sneaky Korean (?) missionary heading into your lands?

Joe Harker - enjoying Liverpool's lucky win

Enjoying!!, I haven't been such a nervous wreck since the 2005 final, what i am experiencing now is just sheer relief! I seriously need to switch to another, quieter, undramatic team, Leyton Orient, that will do!

On topic again

Personally, I've had poor luck getting Vassals, unless it's through war (i.e. beating them down so bad they submit to your rule.)

It's generally very hard to get peaceful vassals, only in RFC does it seem easy to get peaceful vassal's.

Qin...well, he's always mischievous and clever...No doubt he's building up an army also

I always find China, up until Rifles and cannons, very hard to conquer.

Personally i now would find a powerful civ nearby and become friends with him, although he may backstab you, becuase you are "friends" you can distract them with war against someone else

Is that a sneaky Korean (?) missionary heading into your lands?

There are a couple of foreign scouts running across our countryside.

I think we're ready to conquer Cherokee now, better attack with the catapult first. After that, send our military towards the ivory tile near mali, that'll be the shortest way to their closest city.

I think the great merchant should go to Seoul (mind the barbarians while going there!), as it seems to be the biggest city. Our economy is doing pretty fine though, neutral at 50% (and positive if our southern city works both furs).

I usually don't botter with vassals this early in the game, I like to completely annihilate the others.

On a side note, I don't usually do this much Micromanaging, lol, but participating in this succession game has really forced me to slow down and "chew" on every turn. The note taking (perhaps I wrote too many notes this last time?) also slows me down and my mind remembers to check on a few things before I advance the turn.

Single player games make you a bit sloppy I guess, especially when you play on Epic speed alot.

So, anyway, I'm just saying keep the constructive feedback going, I don't mind being challenged on my decisions as I want to get better (I have yet to tackle a Deity game for example).

By the way, we should really improve our land a bit more, some cities can build a workboat, and we need to use our workers effectively.

Pssst...someone poke DaveShack ;)

I took a day off for my wife's birthday.

got it

WOW. That's an excellent reason not to be hanging around here :)

Ask her what it's like to be so young :)

Update: I have played 5 turns but was interrupted by an impromptu journey across a dirt road mountain pass :crazyeye: (well, tall hill), a subsequent evening of recuperation , and a morning of soccer league signups :run: . And attending the turnchat... :D I expect to get to it later tonight.
