[Development] City Name Suggestions

I am confused by the terrain suggestions in this thread, have you submitted them in the other thread already?

Yes please, because that is where I return to look when I implement them. If you could separate them from the city name suggestions (it's fine if names show up in the screenshots) that would also make it easier for me.

Great city name suggestions and fantastic research overall, but I noticed the city names for cities in Khwarazm spill out a lot from the actual region with Kath, Hazarasp and Khiva really corresponding with the two tiles for Gorganj and Mizdahkon. For me the question is whether it's more important to have all the tiles with historical names (and to give representation to important cities like Kath and Khiva on the same tile) even if the city name map is sort of distorted? It would be kind of immersion breaking to play and see say Khiva or Hazarasp so close to Samarkand, but on the other hand it would be cool to see them at all..

I wanted to make some suggestions for Mongolian city names, however I am only able to cross-reference the new map with soul-breathing's post on page 4 of this thread on Mongolia (among other regions) last year, as I haven't yet worked out everything about using git. I will try to learn so I can make some more easily understandable suggestions, but for now I will post them as text while it's fresh in my mind.

Some of Mongolia's city names are only relevant for the modern era. Choibalsan (Chojbalsan currently in-game I think), should only be the name for the city if Mongolia is communist. Otherwise, the city's name should be Bayan Tümen, its traditional name until 1941. It is one of the few cities in Mongolia that has existed as a static city for at least 2 centuries.
-This could probably be a "canonical" city for the Mongols (or Qing) in-game on the new map.

A similar name change proposal should be made for Ulaanbaatar being a communist name for the city, Örgöö or Urga being the most common earlier name for what was originally a nomadic temple complex, as far as I understand, until it grew large enough and became a settled city. I have never seen the city settled as it is directly adjacent to Karakorum even on the new map, so this may not be important.

Sükhbaatar, Darkhan, and Erdenet, all cities that have been suggested for the new map, were founded in 1940, 1961, and 1974, respectively, the latter two as industrial projects.

For the Darkhan tile Kyakhta, or Altanbulag, would be a more appropriate city name:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyakhta
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altanbulag,_Selenge
These locations would be most appropriate for the tile listed as "Darhan" in soul-breathing's post. This tile also encompasses Sükhbaatar imo, and the tile to the northwest should be considered in Russia.

For the Erdenet tile Amarbayasgalant would be the best city name for this tile, as the region only has modern cities, however this is a famous and large Buddhist monastery that has been located there since the 1720s.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amarbayasgalant_Monastery

The other suggestion I would have more Mongolia is that in terms of resource placement, having gone through a wikipedia overview of all the administrative divisions of Mongolia and their listed livestock numbers, in modern times, cattle and yaks seem to be more prominent to the north-west of Ulanbaatar, camels to the south and south-west. Vegetables and Lumber are grown to the north of Ulanbaatar. Sheep and horses are ubiquitous.

It's probably better to work from LA's spreadsheet, yeah. Maybe you can make a copy of it to add to.

As I said before, I’m messing around researching and making city names suggestions for the new map. I have to say that is quite fun doing so, and I’m having a blast discovering obscure colonial and lost settlements, the original names of many cities and so on.

I’ve used LacsiraxAriscal's work as base and updated the map with the most recent terrain adjustments (also with altered Lake Chad location that I’ve proposed in the Map Suggestions thread). So far, I’ve revised city names in the entirety of South America, Caribbean, Central America (south of Guatemala), South Atlantic islands, Madagascar and Southern Indian Ocean islands and, just for fun, Antarctic Peninsula. I think my suggestion's rationale in including names will be evident if you look those areas (and I tried to follow more or less Lacsirax's example), but I'm open to explain it in more detail.

Since this is a collective work by DoC community, I’m sharing my updated spreadsheet for everyone contribute as they could. There are large areas that still don’t have any city names and other places need more consistent revisions; even more complete areas like Europe, India and China are lacking many alternative names for existing cities and may need revision on locations. So certainly we need as much help as possible!

I’m planning next to work in sub-Saharian Africa starting with former Portuguese colonies, Kingdom of Zimbabwe, and the Sahelian Kingdoms.

Very nice! I'll probably contribute more names over time.

Does anyone happen to know what the numbers mean on tiles with no city names?

Great, looking forward for your suggestions!

That’s something that we inherited from Lacsirax's work. Usually it means that we currently don’t have a city name for the tile, but there are few numbers that have a name attached.

Just to update about the spreadsheet:
I've revised and included name suggestions to Mozambique, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, DR and Republic of Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and some few tiles in Tanzania. It was a hellish work to find out names for obscure and unknown capitals, towns and villages of old African chiefdoms and kingdoms, but now it is done! Also included the suggestions that some of you made there!

My suggestions on the "Korea" region.
Name changes that should take place:
Spoiler Name changes :

Hanseong -> Seoul (Industrial)
Dongrae -> Busan (Industrial)
Seorabeol -> Gyeongju (Medival)

Also including a screenshot of soul-breathing's suggestions for this region,
and comparions/reasons for my choices against his.

Taejon(Daejon) is a relatively new city that rose to importance in the early 20c.
Until then, Gongju has always been the most populous and politically important city in the surrounding region.
It was once the capital of the Baekje kingdom, and was a provincial capital during the Joseon dynasty.

Likewise, Kwangju(Gwangju) has been the less important city to Jeonju, until the late 20c.
Jeonju has been the effective provincial capital of the region since 8c,
and was one of the most populous/politically significant cities during the Joseon dynasty.

Likewise, Taegu(Daegu) and Pohang only rose to importance in 20c.
and so I have replaced them with Jinju and Sangju.

Chungju and Wonju are both important cities, but I'd say that location (east of Seoul) would be closer to Wonju.
Chungju is located further south.

Sinuiju is a new city that was seperated from the city of Uiju in 1904. "Sin" literally means "new".
I moved Uiju 1 tile west, and put Kanggye there instead.
Kanggye was an important military stronghold during the Joseon period.

Kimchaek is actually Seongjin; North Korea renamed the city after a general who died during the Korean war.
Anyway, Chongjin is the bigger city in that area, so I'd say Chongjin would be the better choice.

Soul-breathing's location of Chongjin (1tile north of mine) is too up north;
I replaced it with Rajin, which is another important harbor in the NK eastern coast.

Jolbon was the first capital of the Kokuryo(Goguryeo) kingdom; it was only captial for 50 years or so until it was moved to-
Gungnae, which lasted as capital for 424 years, until the capital was moved to Pyongyang.
The location of Gungnae is about where the modern Chinese city of Tonghua stands.

Sangyeong was the capital of the Balhae kingdom (698-926),
which was a state founded by the refugees from the fallen Kokuryo kingdom.
Maybe we could move the river that is North of Seoul 1S, and instead of trying to cram 3 cities that can't even work their first ring into Korea, we could have just Seoul and Pyongyang, both able to work their entire first ring of tiles. There are places where I do want to fit in more cities because of the new map (i.e. Iberia), but I really don't think Pusan (which is most notable for the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Pusan_Perimeter from the Korean War) merits cramming three cities with only 1 tile between them.

@Leoreth - thoughts?

Looks like the current map fits Pyongyang and Seoul.

The current state of the big map.

Another update about the spreadsheet:

I've added and revised city names for Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania, Great Lakes, Guinea region, most of Sahel (notable exception with Sudan, since I've made some map suggestions there regarding the upper Nile course that affect CNM but were probably missed within the North American West Coast discussion) and few areas in Western Sahara. In addition, someone also made several suggestions for Russia that were also all included.

Soon I'll post another batch of map suggestions for Africa regarding most of these places (mostly small things like adjusting terrain/resources), but next will be a more substantial proposal revising the Sahara.

As always, I'm hoping for some suggestions from the community. There are large areas still without city names and others are in dire need of revision, so all help is welcomed. And since this is a large collective work, any contribution hopefully will bring us closer to playing with the new map sooner!

The South African city placement isn't that great, here's my proposal for that
Red5Wj4.jpg

South Africa really should have another row added, but I know Leoreth isn't really a fan of expanding sections of the map.

I'd also recommend moving Gdansk 1N, we don't really need Putzig, and it crowds Warsaw less that way. Beijing also shouldn't be coastal, it's not a coastal city.

But this spreadsheet is mostly very good
