DGIT4-Maelstrom at Sea

Oh hell, I'm too tired to play properly now, and tomorrow I have two hours of German, meaning I get home late and tired. So skip me but expect me to reclaim my turn sometime between Wednsday and Sunday, or possibly some time later next week. I may end up playing my set before SK, but if he's around to play I rather not slow the game down any more than I already did.
I think we should generally skip more quickly and just as a policy allow people to reclaim a skipped set any time before they come up again. Maybe that way the game could move a bit more, even if we don't all play every single round. It may even make the game pick up some momentum and instill us with Viking fury so we may slay our foes with umm, fury and be full of well, fury.

Speaking of Viking Fury...another skip. Oh well.

Hmmm, SK? Are you around. Hopefully you can take this.
1)-Oblivion- <-- skip
2)Blasphemous <-- Skip/swap
3)SolarKnight <-- Up
4)SandrockLQ
5)SpikeIt <--Just Played
6)Smellincoffee <--skip
7)alerum68 <-- autoskip

Geesh. No German for the Bagrut? What is this world coming too?! :D Sounds like you'd prefer German, Blas. I'm sure you'll do well regardless. I'm sure we can easily slot in an academic autoskip.

Well, I had a German class today, my teacher at Goethe Institut said the German embassy is working hard to get German back on the Bagrut. It's a test that the gov't has very little involvement in anyway (Goethe Institut do all the work) and the Germans are very adamant about allowing people to get tested on it. This is now apparently a pivotal point in Germany-Israel relations and it may get in the way of the fourty year celebration of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
And if the Germans fail to get their way, what I will probably do is go to Germany for a month (cause that's worth more than several months of studying, as long as I resist the urge to just speak English). So it's win-win for me, in a way. :)

I am around, I can take it, I will get it played tomorrow night.

(I got it, if that is what circumstances dictate)

Maybe instead of the regular linear round we should switch to a different system:
During each round the order of play is dictated by the order in which people post their got-its. A round ends when everybody has either played or been skipped (we'll only skip at a person's request or when they don't show any signs of life for a while and it comes down to them as the last one(s) left in the round). You can't play twice in a round. Once you've posted a got-it you have 72 hours to post the save and turnlog, if you don't do so in time your turn is disqualified and anyone else can post a got-it and play instead of you (though you can play another time during the same round). We can of course be flexible and allow people to take longer as long as they keep us posted on their progress.
This way we'll be able to be a bit more flexible and the game can be squeezed into our personal schedules better (and thus move along a bit better)... Whoever's available first will play first, and for people who are only available a couple days a week we'll be able to say that they get to take it whenever a set is finished just before their free time. (So say if I am only available Friday and Saturday and someone else posts a save+turnlog on Thursday, I get dibs on the next set.)

Not a bad idea, Blas, but it seems it would be somewhat annoying to keep track of. Really, if everyone just actually posted a got it or not for their turn, and asked for skips/swaps, the usual round robin approach should be fine. Its seems to work in just about every other SG game I've seen.

I think we can combine the two ideas though, if its not too complicated. I'll even keep track of the turn listing. As in round robin, you have, say, 48 hours to post a got it. If you don't claim the game in that time, you are skipped, but can still play that round. The next person is then up to call got it (48 hours again). This continues in round robin fashion. Each person who gets the turn in order has the usual 72 hours and can ask for more time if needed (in their 72 hours). If extra time isn't asked for AND 72 hours go by, its a skip. If you ask for more time and don't meet your commitment, its a skip. If you are tied up mid-turn and don't think you can complete in a timely manner, just post your partially played turns.

Now anyone already skipped that round can post a got it if the game is not claimed yet. But that person is then responsible to play/post in 24 hours. You can again ask for more time, but post within 24 or the person who is scheduled can claim the game. Once the round robin turns have been played, all the skipped people remaining can still play that round. They have 24 hours from the last turn played to claim it. If no one claims its, the next round begins. Obviously we can have some leniency to in the end for needing a couple of days to play, etc.

So, for this round so far:

1)-Oblivion- <-- skip
2)Blasphemous <-- Skip
3)SolarKnight <-- Got It
4)SandrockLQ
5)SpikeIt
6)Smellincoffee
7)alerum68 <-- autoskip

SK has the game and has 72 hours from his claim. Once SK posts his turn, Sandrock has 48 hours to call got it (he's up). Before Sandrock calls got it, either Oblivion or Blas can call got it, but need to post their turns, or at least an update in 24 hrs, or Sandrock can claim it and play his turns.

The real benefit of this is it still maintains an idea of whose turn it should be and it gives that extra push at the end of a turn/round. If you were skipped and all the normal turns were played/skipped, then you have 24 hours to speak up or its off to the next round. Everyone can still work around their commitments, but the game will progress for those who can play if people are tied up for too long.

Okay, that sounds good.

Great idea guys. Also, this should allow me to squeeze in my turns before I go back to work Sunday wether or not Solar gets his up or not.

Aw crap it all. Something came up and I won't be able to squeeze in turns. If an available person wants to do 10 turns between now and Thusday, please fell free to do so. Hell, if 2 people want to do it, than that's fine too. I'm also not adverse to anyone taking a twenty turn set as long as things go well in the first ten turns. We need to get moving and that may mean getting some people to take longer turn sets while other people are busy with other stuff.

Enjoy everyone!

I'm a little rusty, so let's hope I do this okay.

We're building alot of infra, and China is about 5 turns away from attacking us. I'm going to have to switch a few places, mainly the temple building cities over to archers. Archers are going to be nice for the 'zerks, but it's kind of expensive to upgrade them and we don't have a great cash flow. What we really need though are cats, so MDI and Cats in cities without barracks is the theme of this journey my friends...

hehehe... you proabably will all hate me for this, (everyone but Blas that is) but there is to much infra being built. On this level you mainly build units and squeze infra in when you can. As it stands now we won't last to long against China, they're frigging HUGE!

So, changes goes as follows:
Stockholm - Temple to MDI
Stavanger - Walls??? to worker timed with growth in 9.
Birka - Library to MDI
Aarhus - library to Marketplace : I wanted to switch to Barracks but it's to far into the library build.
Copenhagen - Temple to Library : This city has alot of cash, and will have alot more in the future. Possible Science City.
Oslo - Library to MDI
And, no I didn't change everything... only about half.;)

Micro Mange a little bit, but SpikeIt did a good job last turn and not much was needed.

Nervously hit enter.

*IBT
Arab workers stop working on road near Stavanger, but one stays behind.
Russians start on Leo's.
Turn 1(460AD)
If y'all can remember to go back and check this I have a plan for Bergen: If you irr all the grassland, you will be able to work all but 1 mountain, and still be under size 12. You'll only be able to get the hills with mines, so you'll gain about 4 shields in total doing it this way.

Make some worker moves to, and send some units towards Oslo.

*IBT
cut forest in the north
We lost our supply of Spices and Silks AND GEMS?!

Turn 2(470AD)
In a risky move, and since I don't see needed them in 20 turns, I trade our only source or Horses and 124 gold. It WILL give them Riders, but only for 20 turns. It's a catch-22, but we need the luxuries more then I fear their riders.
Small worker turns.

*IBT
Spain starts Copernicus

Turn 3(480AD)
Tell China to get out of our land or declare war. Since we just renewed the luxury deal, they aggreed to leave. Send a swordsman to take the spot to make sure he doesn't come back.

*IBT
Stockholm gets a forrest chop.
Oslo MDI --> MDI
Spanish and English start Leo's

Turn 4(490AD)
Just some worker turns
Change a worthless mine near Kufah to irrigation.

*IBT
arabs finally move worker out of our land... was hoping they'd finish the road first, but oh well.
Trondheim Marketplace --> Harbor. It's going to need it very soon.

Turn 5(500AD)
zzz

*IBT
Two Mongolians galleys enter our waters.
A English Galley comes very close to our waters.
Rey Marketplace -- > Library

Turn 6(510AD)
zzz

*IBT
Mongols drop off 3 horsies a archer and a warrior near Copenhagen. A third ship joins the first 2. It's time for war, I'm sure.

Turn 7(520AD)
Contact the Mongols, and see what they want for peace. It's Kufah. Not a chance in Hel.

Bombard Horseman, but second round misses.
vMDI vs vHorse - we win, but redline.
vMDI vs vArcher - we win 1 dam
vMDI vs rWarrior - We win, no dam
vMDI vs 2hp vHorse - we win, no dam

Do what I can to prevent another landing by spreading out units, but feel safe at this point.

*IBT
China sends a spear into our Borders.
Mongols drop off 2 horseman on far side of Copenhagen, but should have enough to get rid of them.
Trondheim Harbor -- > Temple
Birka MDI -- > MDI
Copenhagen Library -- > Market
Russian start Copern

Turn 8(530AD)
Bombardment fails
3hp vMDI vs vHorse - Horse retreats
vSword vs vArcher - We win, 2 dam
vPike vs 1hp vHorse - We win, 2 dam, but oslo is left open. Send a 1hp MDI from Copenhagen to cover
Talk to Mongols again, and they only want 80 gold for peace. Still to rich for my blood.
I'm half tempted to send enough units to cover every coastal square, to make sure the only attack we'll have is through China or Arabia.

*IBT
Stockholm MDI --> MDI
Stavanager Worker -- > Worker

Turn 9(540AD)
Bombard Mongol ship for 1 dam
Tell China to leave or Remove. They leave.
Can turn science down a notch keeping Eng in 4 but saving 8 gold a turn.

*IBT
Arab's start Leo's now.

Turn 10(550AD)
Bombard a fleeing Mongol ship and give it 1 dam
Shuffle some units around, and leave most in the northeast active for the next player to decided where to send them.

After Turn:
I'd start building Zerks as soon as they come in, but it will take a little while. Full speed ahead towards Invention once Enginering comes in.
Unfortunantly we didn't build hardly any coastal cities, so I'd start building galleys in them starting very soon. We'll need them to use the Zerks properly... ie- sea bound assults using the speed of the galleys to conquer quickly.
Forget about about building infra in every city... limit it to where it's needed and build zerks to take new land... there isn't a chance that we can win until we start taking more cities.

Yay, zerks and galleys! :D
I do think that giving the Chinese horses is a bit too risky tho... The thing is that without Riders they're stretched out too far from us to bring in forces in a timely manner, with Riders that won't be a problem for them. But then again, once they declare they won't be able to produce them anymore so that should only help them in their initial wave of offense.

Wow! A Happy Thanksgiving present. I haven't read through the turn yet, but its nice to see Alerum play a set. I reserve any comments until I get a chance for a read through.

I won't call got it until tomorrow to let any skips from this round to pick it up (Oblivions, SK, Blas ?). If no one does, then I'll pick it up tomorrow, although it'll probably be a slow round for me. The wife and I are doing breakneck speed on re-doing a room for some new furniture coming in. Needless to say, time is scarcer than normal...

Geesh. Why didn't you change everything I was building? :p Just kidding. Some of those (Stavenger walls...) etc were easily open to changing. Other builds were attempts at getting some culture since we are being pressured on all fronts.

While I wasn't keen on trading horses either, its our best move at this point and one I probably would have done as well if the only option available. If we don't trade, there are liable to be attempts to take it from us. I'm just not liking the fact of our local superpower being UU enabled now... Oh well. We did need the luxuries. As for the 3 luxes we had, we originally picked them up via a trade for Monarchy I believe. At the time China was one of the last civs not to have it, so it was a slam dunk deal. Unfortunately, that tech edge is not so apparent any more.

Okay, so we're going hellbent toward 'zerks? Sure, why not. I'm game at this point. We only have two choices. We can try to stay in the tech race and hope to somehow steal a diplo win, but we may very well be overrun by China at some point. Or we can just be reckless Vikings, attempting to pick away at other civs. We may die in the meantime, but what the heck. It sure will be fun to try.

As for the save. I'm going to open this up for SmellinCoffee or any of the skips this round. Just be sure if you are going to "get it" to have the save available for Sandrock on Thursday. There's no way I'm going to have the time to play the next couple of days and finishing for Thursday would be a tough go. I will have some time the upcoming weekend though, so if Sandrock plays on Thursday, expect me to try and pick the game up afterwards.

So officially, the game is open to EVERYONE this round. Since no one has played this round, no sense in moving on to next round, plus Sandrock can play on Thurs.

1)-Oblivion- <-- skip
2)Blasphemous <-- skip
3)SolarKnight <-- skip
4)SandrockLQ <-- Skip (can play Thursday)
5)SpikeIt <-- skip
6)Smellincoffee <-- UP
7)alerum68 <-- Just played (Happy Thanksgiving!)

BTW, Anyone heard from Oblivion? He kind of disappeared into the, er, oblivion. Hope he's okay.

We're to small of an empire to do any kind of research but Pointy-Stick research.;) Because of this is why I suggested the massive upgrade to zerks army. They really are the most powerful attackers for 3 ages, but they have *NO* defense so you MUST use their naval attack and keep them in ships, moving down the coast and wipping them out that way. If you MUST go on land then have a Pike or Musket with the stack. That should only be the last option though. Naval attacks on the coast, sue for peace and take inland cities in the process, as well as techs!! If you want to keep up on techs then there is very little option *BUT* to use 'zerks and kill everyone for it. don't even try to take out China. Keep them happy, and keep the luxury for horse deal going... they'll attack if we take away their horses, but I doubt they will until we do now. They have to much to loose.

Also talked to SC today... he's to busy with school work to claim it. Blas, I know you're around.:p Why don't you take it? Serves you right having a building turn for all the wars you caused in our last game.:p

Nah, don't feel like it... I may go on Wednsday (or as we Vikings call it, Odinsday. ;)).

Sorry guys, general computer hiccup again, will be fixed tomorrow.

Tyrsday not Tir.:p And Odhin has an H in it. Don't forget about Fryr that we get Friday from, or Thor who get Thursday from.;) Or Freya who we get Red Sonja from.... I loved taht movie when I was kid.

Anyway, It's almost tuesday... let's just wait til Sandrock takes it... but y'all need to stop being so scared of the DG tag line... is only 10 turns, so it's very very simple... just remember to ask... "What would Alerum do?";)
