DirectDraw=0 causes crash within 2-5 turns

Windows gives "terranx.icd (or rarely .exe) has stopped responding" within the very beginning of the 2nd turn to the fifth turn of a game. I played a entire game of Alpha Centauri without Alien Crossfire with the voxel setting off without a single crash or patch. Now I want to do a Alien Crossfire game with DirectDraw=0 and it causes the crash. I decided to install the XP/2000 patch and the unoffical patch (http://www.civgaming.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7511) and the same crash still happens. I have attached my DxDiag

Welcome to CFC and the Alpha Centauri forum!

Make sure that you're editing the correct Alpha Centauri.ini file. Depending on how you installed the games, the working copy of the ini file might be located in

C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

If this suggestion doesn't help, please post again.

There was no Firaxis Games folder at C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)

OK, next try running the game in compatibility mode. To do so, right-click the game's shortcut, select Properties and then select the Compatibility tab. Experiment with various options. If still no joy, what version do you have (GOG, SOS, Planetary Pack, original release, etc.)?

I'm running Planetary Pack
2000= crash
XP 2= crash
XP 3= crash
98/ME= load into memory but dosent launch
ME= crash

Next, remove the DirectDraw line from your ini file and add

video mode=1024

to the [Alpha Centauri] section of your ini file.

See this thread on WePlayCiv for more information about your problem. I'm not positive, but your graphics setup may not have the capabilities mentioned by chuft in that thread.

I run back to my old complaint, the colors and my mouse (when using Aero) are screwed up when I alt-tab, even when running at 16 or 8 color bit depth, which is what i want to get rid of. Also I can't print screen in game because the results will just be blackness.

But if I turn down my resolution to 1280 x 768 (though i meant to go to 1024 x 768), the game doesn't crash... yet. I'm going to experiment to find the seemingly maximum.
edit: 1360x768 works fine, wonder how could 4608 pixels could make a difference, I'll have to calibrate ClearType though.

Hi, just return to playing this game, runs like a dream on my old XP rig but i recently got a new win8 laptop (yea I know if I had of know I wouldn't have got it) and had the same problem with crashing in direct draw, reduced the resolution to 1360 from 1366 and bingo no more crashing, what is it about those 6 pixels?

Glad to hear that you got the game to work. We've seen other situations in which the game doesn't support some resolutions on newer laptops. I don't know why this is the case.
