As the two primary powers in our area it would be wise for us to coorporate rather than risk a war that will bleed both of us dry. We propose a treaty of non-aggression for ten years to keep the peace and stability here.

Tying ourselves down for 10 years right at the beginning seems a bit long. How about 5, with an option to extend it to 10 at the end of the first 5?

Agree with Dis, Swiss.

The Holy Roman Empire would be happy to renew our Pact of Friendship, and ensure the that the region of Eastern Europe is firmly secure. We hope that we can overlook our less-than-great relations of the past.

Pope Clement XI

“When great generals and Emperors clashed on the field of battle to determine the fate of Empires, who are the nameless soldiers that did the fighting?” Anonymous Chinese philosopher in the year 1700

“We have enough for the year.” Relief filtered into the air of their small house. He smiled and looked at his small family reaching out to mess up the hair of his youngest son. It had been a good harvest with plentiful rain. The harvesting though was hard work and required the assistance of laborers to complete the harvest before time ran out. The problem had been the rent had been raised. A lot. They had never actually seen their landowner in fact. His grandparents hadn’t either, nor had his own father. They had been tenant farmers for more then 6 generation just managing to eek out a survival.

It didn’t help that the person in charge of collecting rent was a harsh and cruel man even compared to his fellows. He still remembered last year when he had been exhorted for the rest of the rent and how they took it in the form of a small silver locket, a family heirloom. Others would have just demanded the rest of the rent in a fixed amount of time with interest. He shook his head, he didn’t have to worry about that, at least not this year. As if sensing his thoughts, his son raised his head to look at him and asked: “Daddy, will we have enough to eat this year?”

He smiled and held his son before speaking “Yes, we will have enough to eat. And we can afford to buy a whole duck for New Year with dumplings. You love dumplings don’t you?” The yearning and mindlessly happy look instilled a feeling of pride and he looked at the rest of his family. His parents, his wife, two sons, one daughter, and his grandmother made up this small happy family. He had been brought up, during the chaos of the Jin invasion.

Soy, wheat, and barely were what they grew on their farm and depended on for their income. If one crop was destroyed, or even damaged, it would be difficult, extremely difficult for the other crops to be able to make enough to cover the rent, food, and seed for the next year. In addition, they had around 6 chickens whose eggs they sold on the market keeping a few for the next generation.

It was a hard but simple life. And happy at many times, yes, happy at this simple and pleasant life. Life was predictable after all since you were at the mercy of the Gods, nature, and landlord. What made it predictable was that you could never predict what would happen. He had never wanted to become a farmer, but the needs of his family had required it. He had been an only son, and his duty was to his parents. So he had stayed and worked the land, while his mind wondered at his purpose here on Earth.

He patted the sack of money and felt peace and relief flow through him. Yes, they had enough to pay. “Now children, go to sleep. Tomorrow is a big day, we have a lot of work to do.” As the 3 children ran off to bed, he took out the old steel iron sword his father had made and took out a crossbow. He handed the crossbow to his father and himself hefted up the sword. It would be a worrisome night indeed…

***************

The next day was a hurried one as they hastened to prepare for the arrival of the rent collector frantically dusting the floor and tables like ants before the rain. He was a fussy man after all, anything that seemed beneath his dignity would result in his displeasure and as he was the one who saw the landlord, it was better to make an effort to please him at least. He patted the bag of money again and felt the cold hard metal underneath the wool bag. It gave him an aura of peace, which he knew wouldn’t last long.

Unlike himself, the collector was actually on time for rent collection. He looked to be in a hurried mood, and in shuffled clothing quite unlike his normally superior manner. He quickly averted his eyes though as noticing these things would surely be a sign of disrespect. He gestured respectfully to the chair while making sure that his queue wouldn’t touch the respected guest. Waiting until he sat down, he took a chair at the table while the children and his wife, mother and grandmother left the room as his father followed his lead.

As he hauled the sack up to the table, the man simply raised his hands and said a few curt words. “The rent has been raised again, as the owner of this land notes your excellent harvest and believes that you will pay more rent.” He was stunned, completely stunned. He managed to stammer a reply “But that’s against the agreement! Our rent was never lowered when the harvests were bad and you demanded the full rent anyways. Now that there was a successful harvest you can’t just raise it!” As he talked, his fear faded away to anger.

As if he was oblivious to the anger, the rent collector merely sipped his tea and looked calmly at him. “You can pay up, or leave the land.” These words broke his defiance like millions in history past. Forced to choose between an even harsher life to having no life at all they have normally all folded. This time it would be different. As if on cue, a knock on the door came and interrupted the session and his father went to open it while he and the rent collector had a match of wills.

His father opened the door and immediately saw who it was. The local official was the son of his friend who had died fighting the Jin, irony that the son would work for the people that killed his father. But what were surprising were the men aside and behind him. An officer, obviously a Manchu and soldiers were who they were, armed to the teeth. He moved aside to allow the men in and they came in politely and with great manners and set eyes upon the rent collector.

The Manchu smiled a smile of a predator to a prey. Despite his best efforts, the rent collector himself showed a trace of fear. “Ah, Xuan Shi, your luck has finally ran out.” The soldiers rushed forward and promptly arrested the rent collector while the man and his family merely looked on as spectators in their own home. Not sure of their future, or if they had a future at all. As the officer and soldiers left, as if remembering something unpleasant, he turned around to the official. “Do not forget the Kangxi Emperor’s edict.” With that, he left and went off. He would never be seen again by that family.

The room was then filled with the local official looking with a regretful face trying to calm down the frantically worried local family. The man of the family stopped everyone else and just asked a question in short simple phrases. “What will happen to us now?” At those words, the local official seemed to have been relieved by these words and promptly took out a few pieces of paper. “The Emperor Kangxi in his infinitive wisdom, discovered that not all farmland under the rule of the Later Jin Dynasty were owned by people under his rule and that some Nan-Ming nobles still collected rent through various middlemen. That officer in fact, is one of his sons sent to enforce his rule.”

These words still didn’t answer the question and the man pressed on. “What will happen to us now?” The local official smiled before replying “As this land once belonged to a Nan-Ming noble which had been disgracefully overlooked, it will be obviously confiscated.” At these words, a shriek came from the throats of the women but he continued on “These confiscated territories will then be given to their tenants, meaning that you now own this land and are now landowners. The official deed will arrive soon. Good Day.”

After a quick bow, he left a home shocked by silence, unfortunate good fortune. An unseen possibility, that once more, they would actually OWN a piece of land. The first reaction were prayer to the ancestors and Gods. The second reaction, was predictably gratitude to the Empire. The Later Jin Dynasty, to Emperor Kangxi.

“Heaven Bless the Emperor…”

Tsk, tsk...we would have thought the Holy Roman Emperor was more wise. One should not believe all the gossip that one hears. We have many enemies no doubt who wish to slander us with cruel lies.

And indeed the Holy Father is wise. You should listen to him, he did after all grant your holy status.

The Pope still urges the Holy Roman Empire to reconsider. This is the final time the Pope will discuss his opinion on the diplomatic relatiosn between France and HRE.

Aragon has also been approached by multiple nations speaking of French hostility towards Aragon and teh Holy Roman Empire. The Pope would be advised to reconsider his position in this light, and Aragon, too, breaks diplomatic ties with France.
